No. of bitstreams: 1 Renato Avanzi.pdf: 674338 bytes, checksum: 297601da12c4b2bb254f68e4a5ba8fb0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008-04-14 / This research analyzes the communicational impacts and symbolic effects of Agitação Magazine (Revista Agitação), the most important house organ of the largest nongovernmental organization of the third sector in Brazil: CIEE (Integration Center between Companies and Universities). The main research questions are: a) what are the impacts of Agitação in the building of visibility, credibility maintenance and institutional mark consolidation aimed by CIEE; b) what are the relations observed between the imagetic signs on the magazine covers and the values proposed by CIEE; c) what social imaginaries are being built and /or reiterated when we analyze this imagetic discourse; d) how the main segments of the readers – executives, educators, representatives of the public power, and students – apprehend and interpret the communicative intention of the Magazine, considering the different aspects of its mediational function; and e) what is the visibility effectively obtained by CIEE through this practice of cultural consumption. To answer to these questions, some analytical resources are adopted: in a first moment (chapter 3), the context data and a general view to locate CIEE in the social-cultural macro scenarios are presented, using them to punctuate the main steps for the consolidation of the organizational communication policy. In a second moment (chapter 4), one of the main communication vehicles between the organization and its target publics is investigated, prioritizing the way imagetic elements and the social-imaginary – about work, success, empregability, among others – are articulated on the covers of Agitação Magazine – reiterated by CIEE’s discoursive practices. In a third moment (chapter 5), the impacts of the magazine on students (one of the target publics) will be analyzed through their narratives. Still on chapter 5, a comparative analysis articulates the results obtained in each step: CIEE’s discoursive practices, Agitação’s imagetic analysis and the reader’s narratives. In order to finish this research (chapter 6), the final considerations bring a summary of all the conclusions obtained in each of the previous chapters. This way, the research uses multi methodological tools: documental research, bibliographical investigation, imagetic analysis and focus groups for a qualitative study. Besides, it considers the adoption of a clear communication strategy as a fundamental mark in the consolidation of the major institutional visibility.

The affective citizen communication model : how emotions engage citizens with politics through media and discussion

Valenzuela, Sebastián 15 July 2011 (has links)
This dissertation seeks to improve our understanding of the process by which emotions enable citizens to learn about public affairs and engage in political activities during electoral campaigns. It advances a theoretical model that incorporates the dynamics of emotions, various forms of media use, interpersonal communication and political involvement. This affective citizen communication model integrates into a single framework the insights of affective intelligence theory (Marcus, Neuman, & MacKuen, 2000) and the work on communication mediation (McLeod et al., 1999, 2001) and its two iterations, cognitive mediation (Eveland, 2001) and citizen communication mediation (Cho et al., 2009; Shah et al., 2005, 2007). More specifically, it suggests that the effects of emotions triggered by political candidates (e.g., enthusiasm, anxiety, anger) on knowledge of the candidates’ stands on issues and on political participation are largely mediated by communication variables, including news media use, political discussion and debate viewing. By positing emotions as an antecedent of both mediated and interpersonal communication, the study extends current research based on affective intelligence theory. At the same time, the study adds emotions to communication mediation processes, which to date have been studied from a mostly cognitive perspective. To test the relationships between the variables identified in the affective citizen communication model, I rely on panel survey data collected for the 2008 and 2004 U.S. presidential elections by the American National Election Studies (ANES) and the National Annenberg Election Surveys (NAES), respectively. Two types of structural equation models are tested, cross sectional (to relate individual differences) and auto-regressive (to relate aggregate change across waves). Results suggest that positive emotions spark media use, whereas negative emotions spark political discussions, and both types of communication behavior influence issue knowledge and participation in campaign activities. Furthermore, the theorized structure is found to perform better than an alternative structure where communication variables cause positive and negative emotions. Thus, results provide strong support for the proposed affective citizen communication model. Refinements to the proposed model, connections with existing theories of political communication, such as agenda setting and partisan selective exposure, and directions for future research are also discussed. / text

An examination of the development and maintenance of intercultural conflict mediation and resolution programs on university campuses in the United States

Janiczak, Zaneta M. 01 January 2011 (has links)
Many colleges and universities throughout the United States have a long history of encouraging and maintaining a diverse community of international students and scholars on their campuses. As a result of the interaction within this great mix of cultures, interpersonal conflict of an intercultural nature has understandably developed. To cope with the conflicts between cultures, many institutions have developed intercultural mediation programs and resources. This research examines what some U.S. universities do to respond to the issue of international student and scholar intercultural conflict mediation and resolution. The study was designed to explore the different types of resources and services that have been developed and to study some of them in greater detail to gain a better understanding of their approaches and resulting issues and successes. The overall objective of this research was to learn how the various ways mediation programs offered at the selected universities work in practice. The literature review was created to gain an overall understanding of conflict styles and conflict resolution approaches that are relevant to the many cultural groups who are in need of the mediation. My data collection process focused on how colleges and universities incorporate mediation programs into the campus at large. Data was gathered through 12 interviews with administrators who have experience working in the intercultural conflict mediation and resolution area; these programs were at the Universities of Washington and Minnesota, and Nevada, Reno and Michigan. From the interviews and the literature review, an annotated bibliography and guidelines were created to provide insights and recommendations for consideration by intercultural conflict mediation and resolution programs at educational institutions throughout the United States.
