In search of home: An ethnographic case study exploring collaborative educational efforts addressing rural homelessness

Cochrane, Meaghan January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Curriculum and Instruction Programs / Kakali Bhattacharya / Sally J. Yahnke / Over the past five years, alone, in the rural state of West Virginia, the number of identified homeless students has increased 315%— from 2,000 students to 8,300 students— which is assumed to be a conservative estimate by local and state education officials (Mays, 2014). Homelessness is often identified as an urban problem, as the most visible forms occur among street dwellers in urban settings (Joyce-Beaulieu & Sulkowski, 2014). Within rural locations, however, homelessness predominately remains a concealed issue requiring extensive collaboration to combat issues of geographic isolation and lack of support, infrastructure, and public services. This study will demonstrate how community school programming offers considerable potential to provide direct support and services within the school setting for rural homeless youth.

The school-community library as a solution to the lack of library services in the Umtata district of the former Transkei.

Dube, Luyanda. January 1997 (has links)
Combined libraries are school facilities that double as public libraries, to allow libraries to reach areas not previously served, in a very cost-effective way. These libraries are most suitable for small disadvantaged communities which cannot afford to provide minimum library services through seperate services. This study is based on the extension of library services in the Umtata district of the former Transkei, where library services are almost non-existent. It sets out to establish the following: (i) the status quo in terms of school library provision and availability, (ii) the extent of, or lack of awareness with regard to the role of the school library in education, (Hi) the existing relations between the school and the community, (iv) the attitude of school principals to the concept of combined libraries. The survey research was employed with person-to-person interview using an interview schedule. Ninety two school principals and two teacher-librarians were interviewed. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data obtained. The findings revealed that school library provision in the Umtata district is poor, the few libraries that exist are inadequate in terms of material, staff and accomodation. There is however, a growing realization of the necessity for libraries in educational institutions. There is also a healthy relationship between the school and the community as a result most respondents supported the idea of joint-use. In conclusion, the study is in concurrence with previous studies on combined libraries, that they are suitable for those communities that are unable to provide minimum library services through seperate facilities. The adaptation of combined library services to suit the divergent needs of people with different cultural and social background is recommended. A local-based information system, which takes the form of a community participatory model is recommended. / Thesis (M.I.S.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1997.

Community School: A Design for Wilmington High School

Jordan, Kaitlyn 01 January 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Over the past twenty years there has been a major shift in the societal culture of America which has presented many challenges for children, families and the public school system. Being able to adapt to these challenges have not been easy. If future schools are going to keep pace with these changes, then they will have to provide its students with a variety of services which enhance their educational opportunities, while also developing and strengthening their physical, emotional, social and moral competency. One approach to this problem could be a more integrated community based schooling. This thesis will examine this concept of how the public school system will operate when more accessible community features are integrated within the design. The generator for this prototype will be a new design of Wilmington High School which serves ninth through twelfth grade students. This program will support a variety of activities for multiple age groups, helping to build a center piece for community life. A community based approach will enable this age group to become leaders in the community and further strengthen their capabilities to function successfully outside of the educational environment.
