Towards a business analysis capability model: a South African and United Kingdom comparisonMogodi, Shirley Phumzile 19 March 2013 (has links)
The increasing demand for business analysts in recent years has brought about the
need for a proper articulation of the Business Analyst’s role. Despite the growth of the
business analysis field, and its value, academic research on the practices, competencies
and capabilities of a business analyst is still limited. Drawing on the Resource-Based
View of the firm theory and the concept of practice, this study proposes a business
analysis capability model. A positivist qualitative research methodology has been
conducted using a directed content-based analysis approach. This research analysed
300 business analyst online job advertisements in order to identify the practices,
competencies and capabilities of business analysts as perceived by employers based in
South Africa (SA) and the United Kingdom (UK). The findings suggest that, both in SA
and the UK, analysts with systems skills, practices, competencies and capabilities are
preferred by employers over those with business skills. The results of the study suggest
that South African employers demand additional skills, practices and competencies
from a business analyst than are required by employers based in the UK. This suggests
that SA based business analysts are capable of competing for employment in the UK
without the need for them to acquire additional skills. This research makes conceptual
contributions to academia, and also offers managerial contributions to practice.

An exploratory study into the marketing competencies needed for a South African OrganizationKgatle, Lucky 08 April 2010 (has links)
The objective of this exploratory research is to develop an understanding of those areas of specialisation or competencies required by the marketing divisions of South African corporations. The study further seeks to explore the types of marketing activities organisations prefer to outsource to other specialised firms such as advertising agencies. The study draws from the need to develop an understanding of how organisations remain competent in the highly competitive market driven by globalisation and technological advancement where consumers are disposed to a myriad of products. The research methodology was two-pronged: (1) literature review drawn from both domestic and international literature which provided an insight of how marketing divisions operate and skills required for the marketing profession, albeit lack of consensus. (2) The case study focused on a single pharmaceutical company (referred to as The Group in this study) which provided an insight on how companies diversified their marketing strategies. Twenty five respondents participated in the study, all of whom are employees of The Group. About ten (10) respondents are current brand managers and 15, are former brand managers (employed by The Group). The respondents answered to a questionnaire which sought to understand key competencies in the three areas of focus: marketing strategy, marketing initiative, and marketing implementation. This research established that marketing implementation was key area which organisations were most likely to outsource. Lessons from this case study which is limited to understanding the outsourcing aspect will provide an insight to South African companies and organisations about areas that are best suited for outsourcing. The limitation of the study leaves room for future research by recommending that research should be directed towards understanding reasons for outsourcing those specific services. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2010. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted

Learners' competencies in new forms of assessment: A case studyRodwell, Lynn 28 February 2007 (has links)

MSc research report -

Faculty of Science / This small-scale case study researches the importance of analysing the
mathematics competencies assessed by a selection of tasks developed for a
portfolio in Grade 9 during 2003. The tasks are analysed according to the
cognitive demand placed on the learners, plus their open-ended versus
closed nature. This research reveals that the weaker ability learners
experience a greater apparent benefit, compared to the stronger ability
mathematics learners. Although there are other mathematical competencies
assessed in this research report, those of ‘thinking and reasoning
mathematically’ and ‘representing and explaining mathematical entities’ are
most problematic, compared to the more traditional competencies of
‘memorisation’ and ‘manipulation of mathematical symbols and formalisms’.
Assessing the tasks from the perspective of mathematical competencies, may
serve to provide an alternative framework for analysing the appropriateness
or not of tasks used in the development of portfolios and thus improve the
practises of mathematics teachers in general.
