Competing Strength-Based Models of Trauma and Suicidality in a High-Risk Primary Care Sample

Mladen, Samantha 01 January 2019 (has links)
There is limited research on the relationship between trauma exposure, depression, and suicidality, particularly in high-risk primary care samples. The present study aims to: 1) characterize the prevalence of suicidality, depression, and trauma exposure in this sample; 2)develop and test models of the relationships between suicidality, depression, and trauma exposure in this sample; 3) augment the selected model with key protective factors, including social support and religiosity; and 4) further elaborate the nature of religiosity as a potential protective factor using the subscales of the Attitudes toward God scale, Anger toward God and Comfort with God. Patients (n=207) in a safety net primary care clinic waiting room completed measures assessing childhood and adult trauma, depression, and suicidal ideation. Approximately half of patients in this sample report having experienced at least four traumatic events, 82.13% of individuals were in the clinical range for depression, and nearly half of the sample endorsed some level of suicidality. In the first model, trauma exposure moderated the relationship between depression and in the second model, suicidality and depression mediated the relationship between trauma exposure and suicidality. Both models were then augmented with social support, religiosity, Anger toward God, and Comfort with God. All moderated moderational and moderated mediational models were nonsignificant, though certain paths were found to be significant. Social support had some protective effects, but all three aspects of religiosity exacerbated the models tested, in contrast to existing literature. These findings may be used to encourage more extensive and nuanced assessment for suicidality.

These models represent a competition between ballistic deposition pattern and another rule dependent on the deposition model. Each of these new rules introduced in two of the three models are related to the kinetic energy of incident particles. An interesting feature of two of our models is the existence of the restructuring of the particles that were already linked in the aggregate, these processes depend on the speed of the incident particles. We show that our models exhibit the same scaling behavior observed in other competitive models. We study in the models, the variation of surface and volumetric properties in terms of a parameter F, where F is the ratio between the amount of particles that obey the ballistic deposition rule and the total amount of particles deposited. Finally, we list some properties and volumetric surface and use a scaling law to characterize the pore morphology of the aggregates generated by our three models as a function of a specific length scale.

Lines of Descent: Kuhn and Beyond

Weinert, Friedel 03 December 2013 (has links)
yes / Thomas S. Kuhn is famous both for his work on the Copernican Revolution and his ‘paradigm’ view of scientific revolutions. But Kuhn later abandoned the notion of paradigm (and related notions) in favour of a more ‘evolutionary’ view of the history of science. Kuhn’s position therefore moved closer to ‘continuity’ models of scientific progress, for instance ‘chain-of-reasoning’ models, originally championed by D. Shapere. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the debate around Kuhn’s new ‘developmental’ view and to evaluate these competing models with reference to some major innovations in the history of cosmology, from Copernicanism to modern cosmology. This evaluation is made possible through some unexpected overlap between Kuhn’s earlier discontinuity model and various versions of the later continuity models. It is the thesis of this paper that the ‘chain-of-reasoning’ model accounts better for the cosmological evidence than both Kuhn’s early paradigm model and his later developmental view of the history of science.

The development of the knowledge building environment scale

Lin, Kuei Yu Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study was to develop the Knowledge Building Environment Scale (KBES). Three independent samples was used to validte the reliability and validity of the scale. Firstly, sample A (n=332) was used to generate the factors through exploratory factor analysis. It resulted in a scale of three factors which contains ‘idea’ factor, ‘agent’ factor and ‘community’ factor. Secondly, a series of competing models was established and evaluated by confirmatory factor analysis through sample B (n=536). Comparing with several competing models, hierarchical model was found to be the most efficient model with good reliability and validity. Finally, the cross-validation was tested by sample C (n=536) for hierarchical model to confirm the stability and predictive power of this model. The KBES can provide relevant institutions as a tool for evaluating learning environments.
