Assessment of the conclusion validity for empirical research studies published in the journal of speech, language, and hearing research

Byrns, Glenda Elkins 15 May 2009 (has links)
Research-based decision making has been advanced as a way for professionals to make a determination about the effectiveness of a potential treatment. However, informed consumers of research need to be able to determine what constitutes evidence-based practices and what criteria can be used to determine if evidence-based practices have been met. This study was a synthesis of research that involved a critical review of the empirical research studies reported in Volume 47 of the Journal of Speech, Language, and Hearing Research (JSLHR) published in 2004. This methodological research synthesis evaluated (a) the research designs used in the JSLHR studies, (b) information and rationale used to inform population validity assessment decisions, and (c) the extent to which the sampling designs, population validity rating, data analysis procedures, and the specification of generalizations and conclusions provide sufficient evidence to determine an overall rating of conclusion validity. Results indicated that less than one-fifth of the 105 research synthesis population of studies used experimental research designs. Additionally, the vast majority of the research synthesis population of studies (83.8%) were observational research designs. Only five studies out of the research synthesis population of studies (4.8%) were determined to have high population validity. In contrast, 84.8 percent of the research synthesis population of studies were found to have low population validity. That is, the studies did not contain adequate information or description of the essential sampling concerns. The vast majority or 75.3 percent of the research synthesis population of studies were rated as having low conclusion validity. Approximately one-fifth of the 105 research synthesis study population (22 studies or 20.9%) were found to have moderate conclusion validity while less than five percent of the total studies (4 of 105 studies or 3.8%) were found to have high conclusion validity. A meaningful relationship between population validity ratings and conclusion validity ratings was established. Since 81 of 105 studies have identical ratings for both population and conclusion validity, the accuracy of the prediction model developed for this study is 77.1 percent.

Differences in Seasonality Based on Movie Quality

Wrenn, Alex 01 January 2019 (has links)
In recent years, the entertainment industry has begun to announce the release dates of many of their movies years in advance. This leads one to believe that movie studios are not taking into account the quality of a movie when a studio decides its release date. This paper will be an analysis in whether there is a difference in seasonality between different qualities of movies. If a studio announces the release date before filming even begins, it is clear that they do not know, and therefore cannot properly consider, the quality of the movie when they make its release date public. I will use films that make over a million dollars at the box office from 2000-2016 to examine the seasonality of good, average, and bad movies. My models will control for variables that were found to be significant in previous research. These include budget, MPAA rating, genre, and Oscar nominations. I will prove that there is a difference in seasonality between all three of these qualities groups. This will show that the Hollywood is now dismissing a key component in the difficult decision process that is movie release dates.

The analysis of consensus conference by Social judgement theory-2005 youth consensus conference

Liu, Yu-Sheng 12 July 2006 (has links)
The concept of Public Participation comes from democratic theory. The core assumes that people are interested in public affairs and participate constructively. The consensus conference is developed to solve democratic problems. IT invites people without specialized knowledge to discuss controversial issues before they read related data. They set important problems in the domain and ask the experts in public. they debate controversial issues and make a decision. The youth consensus conference is the promise of President Chen in April. It provides youth the opportunity to participate social democracy. And we discuss the comment response adequately, conference satisfy, and conclusion reachable to make sure the difference between experts and participators. 61.1% participators thought comment response adequately is important and better. 55.6% participators thought that the conference satisfy is important and positive. The great conclusion is anticipated. 44.1% participator had different comment in conclusion reachable. Because about half people thought conclusion reachable was not easy to achieve. The experts had almost the same opinion in comment response and they believed the existence of sufficient comment reachable system. It makes everybody would say everything. A part of experts the topics influence consensus. The experts thought the conclusions was not possible adopt by the government. The point is the knowledge gained and the process of discussion.
