The development and analysis of a mobile explosive containment unit for on-board aircraft protection

This body of work examines the process involved in researching a mobile explosive containment unit for use on board a commercial aircraft. If a device with unknown origin were discovered on board a commercial aircraft an explosive containment unit could be used to dispose of it thereby preventing the passengers and the hardware from incurring any harm. A methodology was developed to help understand and effectively capture the properties of nominal explosives, the detonation pulse, ensuing shock and pressure waves. This methodology was developed with the purpose of mitigating these explosive effects. The information concerning the material properties, shape and sizes of an explosive containment unit were all analyzed to identify one optimal containment unit. This containment unit was utilized extensively in modeling to determine a range of possible materials and reinforcement methods, for reducing the total weight of the unit. Upon optimizing the containment unit numerical analysis was performed on a fuselage section of a narrow body commercial aircraft with the containment unit. The containment unit was successful in arresting the explosion before it was able to cause harm to its surroundings. The success of these containment units proves that the methodology discussed and developed here is capable of rabidly developing and analyzing explosive containment units to fit a wide variety of needs. / Master of Science

Evaluation of the thermal-hydraulic software GOTHIC for nuclear safety analyses

The aim of this master theses was to evaluate the thermal-hydraulic calculation software GOTHIC for the purpose of nuclear containment safety analyses. The evaluation was performed against some of the Marviken full scale containment experiments and a comparison was also made against the two codes RELAP5 and COPTA. Models with different complexity were developed in GOTHIC and the parameters pressure, temperature and energy in different areas of the enclosure was investigated. The GOTHIC simulations in general showed a good agreement with the Marviken experimental results and had an overall better agreement then RELAP5. From the results it was possible to conclude that the developed GOTHIC model provided a good representation of the Marviken facility.

Exploration of Ion-Exchanged Glass for Seals Applications

As the nuclear industry grows around the globe, it brings with it a need for more safeguards and proliferation resistant technologies. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) depends on effective containment and surveillance (C/S) technologies and methods for maintaining continuity of knowledge over nuclear assets. Tags and seals, a subset of C/S technologies, are an area where innovation has been relatively stagnant for the past fifteen years. It is necessary to investigate technologies not previously used in this field in order to defend against emerging threats and methods of defeat. Based on a gap analysis of tags and seals currently being used by the IAEA, completed with the input of several subject matter experts, the technology selected for investigation was ion-exchanged glass. Ion-exchanged glass is relatively inexpensive, has high strength, and can be used in a variety of applications. If identical pieces of glass are exchanged under the same conditions and subjected to the same point load, the fracture patterns produced can be compared and used as a verification measure. This technology has the potential to be used in passive seal applications. Each image was categorized depending on its fracture as a "3 leaf" or "4 leaf" pattern. These two populations were separately analyzed and evaluated. Several methods used to analyze the fracture patterns involve the use of image analysis software such as ImageJ and the MATLAB Control Point Selection Tool. The statistical analysis software Minitab was used to validate the use of facture pattern analysis as verification tool. The analysis yielded a 60% verified comparison for samples demonstrating a "3 leaf" fracture pattern and a 78% verified comparison for samples with a "4 leaf" fracture pattern. This preliminary analysis provides a strong indication of the plausibility for the use of ion-exchanged glass as a verification measure for C/S measures and specifically tags and seals.

Effects of thermal stresses on Pressurised Water Reactor nuclear containment vessels following a Loss of Coolant Accident with assimilated containment filtered venting system

In a nuclear power plant, the last barrier under normal and accident operations is the containment building. This is normally constructed from concrete reinforced with steel bars, which are prestressed to enhance the overall capability to withstand thermodynamic stresses like over-pressurisation and high temperatures. The failure of this final barrier will lead to the release of radioactivity to the surrounding environment. To examine the effects of thermo-hydraulic stresses on PWR containment following a LOCA, a model is proposed with simulated scenarios performed at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station as a case study. The accidents were simulated using the Koeberg engineering simulator to obtain the output data. The scenario for the proposed model correlates the critical mass flow from a double-ended guillotine break to the containment pressure and temperature increase. Different containment filtered venting systems (CFVS) are also investigated in this study as severe accident management systems. CFVS have historically been included in boiling water reactor (BWR) designs, but following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, they are being introduced as severe accident management systems to manage the threat of containment over-pressurisation in pressurised water reactors (PWR). Finally, the rate of change in containment pressure and temperature is analysed and compared to literature, with the incorporation of a simulated filtered venting system to the PWR containment building.

Supervision and containment in community clinic contexts : a study of trainee clinical psychologists' experiences.

This study conceptualises the workings of supervision within a South African community clinic setting, focusing specifically on trainees’ experiences of work and supervision in such contexts. Training and working in community contexts has become increasingly important in the field of clinical psychology in South Africa. Multiple and varied challenges face trainees learning and working in these contexts. The experience may evoke overwhelming emotional responses for trainees. Supervision can play an important role in offering support and providing a reflective space for trainees, thus helping to render their experiences manageable and meaningful. A qualitative research design was used in this study to explore the experiences of trainee psychologists learning and working at a community clinic in Johannesburg as a component of their clinical psychology Masters training. Six past clinical psychology trainees from the University of the Witwatersrand were interviewed in order to gain understanding of their experiences of work and supervision from their own perspectives. What emerged from analysis of the interview material was a rich description of the community clinic and the challenges trainees are faced with in working there. The impact of being a new therapist within the environment was an area commonly discussed in interviews. Most significantly, the importance of supervision within the context was highlighted, with interviewees focusing on the need for containment and a space to think. Bearing these ideas in mind, the study draws on psychodynamic theory, particularly that of Wilfred R. Bion, to help conceptualise the workings of supervision in such a context. The study illustrates that considerable and meaningful work and learning can be done in less than ideal circumstances.

Beauty and the beast : clients' experience of counselling within a narrative framework, considering concepts of containment and freedom

The experience of opposition between what could be contained in my internal world, and what I wanted freedom from containing while a client in counselling led to the conception of this research. Containment and freedom seemed to form a polarity (Jung 1961; 1969) in that each notion became as necessary as the other. Clients who became participants were in counselling with other counsellors and were asked to keep journals on their thoughts and feelings after counselling sessions and these formed the data for the study. My interest in poetry guided this process as the journals were created by short phrases forming each line and this seemed to influence the writing and analytic process. The journals produced by the participants encouraged the original heuristic (Moustakas 1990) design to surrender the richness that was hidden within it as it became a narrative inquiry. Containment, freedom and the possible polarity between them are investigated as constructs of emotional opposition experienced by the client. The construct and categories which emerge from the data suggest aspects of containment and freedom that demonstrate how emotional movement may occur within the participants through the opposition between containment and freedom. The data also seems to image established theory within the journal stories. A relationship between poetry and the counselling experience is drawn together within the research process as the unconscious and the use of metaphor seem to elicit the discovery of the self. My experiences of personal life events that impact upon the study are held alongside the project as such experiences and the research develop my voice which is relevant to the process and outcome of the work.

Chloroplast Biotechnology in Higher Plants: Expressing Antimicrobial Genes in the Plastid Genome

While genetic improvement of susceptible crop species may enhance resistance to microbial pathogens and facilitate reduced pesticide load, the possibility for transmission of novel genes to wild relatives has hampered acceptance of GM crops in some markets. Chloroplast transformation presents an attractive alternative to nuclear transformation and offers the potential to ameliorate these environmental concerns. Most agronomically important species exhibit maternal inheritance of organellar genomes which eliminates the threat of transgene escape through pollen. Gene silencing is absent due to site directed, single copy insertion by homologous recombination. Foreign proteins can accumulate to high levels (up to 50% of total soluble protein) and are retained within the chloroplast envelope protecting them from degradation by host cytoplasmic proteases. A bacterial chloroperoxidase gene (cpo-p) was transformed into the tobacco chloroplast genome to test its efficacy against plant pathogens and the mycotoxin producing saprophyte Aspergillus flavus.
