ARCHITECTURAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR A VARIABLE BIT RATE DATA ACQUISITION TELEMETRY ENCODER

Lee, Jeffrey C. 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2007 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Third Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 22-25, 2007 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / Modern telemetry systems require flexible bit rate telemetry encoders in order to optimize mission formats for varying data rate requirements and/or signal to noise conditions given a fixed transmitter power. Implementing a variable bit rate telemetry encoder requires consideration of several possible architectural topologies that place different system requirements on data acquisition modules within the encoder in order to maintain adequate signal fidelity of sensor information. This paper focuses on the requirements, design considerations and tradeoffs associated with differing architectural topologies for implementing a variable bit rate encoder and the resulting implications on the encoder systems data acquisition units.

A contenção da Rússia: geopolítica, estaticídio e astropolítica / The Containment of Russia: geopolitics, statecide and astropolitics

Sousa, Danilo Rogerio de 05 August 2019 (has links)
The central idea of this thesis is to discuss the phenomenon of Russian containment from three-dimensional fronts: the territorial expansion of NATO, the statecide of Russian allies and Astropolitics, as well as the relevance or not of the theory of Neo-Eurasianism in this process. The theoretical approach revolved around the theories and concepts of classical geopolitics as well as realistic approaches to international relations, in order to highlight the relevance of the geographical factor in the phenomenon in question. The cartographic representation, especially in its thematic aspect, was present through a series of maps, most of them made by the author. Regarding the conceptual range, the concepts of checkerboard and shatterbelt, by Phil Kelly, as well as the Robert Jervis model were used. In the same way, the notion of balance of power guided the entire search for this study. In addition, the critiques of important academic realists (Henry Kissinger, John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt) were emphasized and the primacy of geographic space in determining the phenomena studied was highlighted. A new concept emerged from this analysis, the Statecide, a direct product of the relationship between Russian containment and the formation of geopolitical checkerboars, as well as the establishment of shatterbelt. The structure of this thesis is divided into six chapters, namely: Methodological Introduction, 1) Geopolitics as a science, 2) Russia\'s territorial problems, 3) NATO\'s expansion towards the Russian border, 4) Statecide, intervention and world disorder, 5) Astropolitics and 6) Neo-Eurasianism as a Russian idea. The intellectual effort of this study sought to highlight the importance of the phenomenon of Russian containment as well as the urgency of resuming the idea of balance of power as moderator of the geopolitical escalation of the historical moment in which international politics finds itself, always emphasizing the importance of Geography and Geopolitics in understanding this issue.

Developing an efficient FEM structural simulation of a fan blade off test in a turbofan jet engine

Husband, Jason Burkley 29 October 2007
This work develops a methodology for full engine FEA simulation of the fan blade off containment test for a jet engine using LS-Dyna. The fan blade off containment test is a safety requirement involving the intentional release of a fan blade when the engine is running at full power. The released blade must not pierce or fracture the engine cases during the impact or rotating unbalance. The novel feature of the LS-Dyna simulation is the extensive full engine geometry as well as the widespread use of nonlinearities (mainly plasticity and friction) to absorb the large kinetic energies of the engine rotors. The methodology is simple to use, runs quickly and is being recognized by industry as a contender for widespread implementation. Future applications look promising enough that the methodology warrants further development and refinement.

'But She Doesn't DO Anything!' Framing and Containing Female Celebrity in the Age of Reality Television

Patrick, Stephanie 05 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis offers a feminist analysis of the gendered public discourses surrounding notions of talent, authenticity and containment. Using two of the most polarizing stars in North America – ‘Snooki’ and Kim Kardashian – the author offers an analysis of how both hard and soft news frame our everyday understanding of women’s public work. Textual analyses of news articles demonstrated that displays of sexual power were most undermined by the media while attempts to venture beyond the reality television texts were contained. On the other hand, the news media were more likely to use positive framing when women were seen to be fulfilling more traditional roles such as wife and mother. The empirical research approach provides an original framework which can be applied to other female public figures to examine how such ideological and gendered discourses shape our understanding of women’s work as well as, more generally, women’s roles in our society.

Containment? : an investigation into psychoanalytic containment and whether it is provided by staff in an NHS institution in relation to someone with a diagnosis of personality disorder

Weightman, Elizabeth Caroline January 2016 (has links)
This research investigated the psychoanalytic idea of containment in the context of NHS staff responses to a person diagnosed with personality disorder. The aim was to identify what, if any, containment was provided by staff for someone diagnosed with personality disorder by recording staff responses to an assessment and analysing the discourse. The research was undertaken with participants selected to represent a cross section of staff in the organisation and included senior and junior, clinical, administrative and managerial staff. The discourse analysis of the interviews examined defences against containment such as splitting, projective identification and idealisation and the positions people occupied in relation to the material and the researcher, as well as looking for examples of containment. Reflexivity was a key part of the methodology, forms a significant part of the thesis and is used to contribute to the discussion. Reflexivity, findings from the review of the literature and the analysis of the interviews form the basis of the discussion and conclusions. The research showed that containment, in its psychoanalytic sense, is often avoided and defended against. Key difficulties with developing the capacity for containment were found to be: conflict between the personal and professional in staff and anxiety in relation to the power of others in the organisation. Suggestions are made for how changes could be made within the organisation and how this could benefit both staff and people who use services. Changing the approach to containment could save costs as some repeat admissions could be avoided and staff satisfaction enhanced. The conclusions from the research make a contribution to clinical practice in NHS settings, to the psychoanalytic theory of containment and to the methodology of psychoanalytic discourse analysis. Recommendations for further research include more psychoanalytic discourse analysis to identify defences in text and research evaluating reflective staff groups.
