Metaphor in Ricoeur's hermeneutics of poetic language

Mehta, R. (Rajesh) January 1991 (has links)
Ricoeur advances a theory of metaphor as discourse. The notion of metaphor as event and as meaning is complicated by the form of written discourse and the distanciation which inscription engenders. By specifying the autonomy of the text in relation to the author's intention, the original audience, and the original context, Ricoeur argues that metaphor refers to its own world. Suggesting that the metaphorical arises from a "seeing-as" which contains a non-verbal element, he contends metaphors indicate a extra-linguistic mode of existence. The possibility of conceptualization lies for Ricoeur, at the core of the dynamism of the metaphorical. It is proposed in this thesis that Ricoeur's defence of the autonomy of speculative discourse is inadequate.

Perspectives on Ricoeur's early hermeneutics of subjectivity

Cristian, Alin January 1991 (has links)
In this thesis I examine the initial stage of Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics of the "I am," focusing particularly on the question of method. / In Chapter 1 I analyze how psychoanalysis opens a space for Ricoeur's hermeneutics of "I am" by redirecting doubt towards the origins of meaning. I will try to show that the premises of this hermeneutics--the analogy between subjective manifestations and texts--preclude strong methodological commitments. / The Second Chapter focuses on the main argument Ricoeur makes in favor of method. His attempt to set in motion a dialectic between phenomenology of subjectivity and structuralism will be questioned with respect to the power this dialectic has to capture the "I" as the generative moment of the interpreted series of subjective manifestations. / Finally, with the analysis of Heidegger in Chapter 3, it will become apparent that the very framework of discussion in terms of subject-object, structure-event, signifier-signified has to be replaced by an ontological approach and that from this perspective subjectivity is ultimately beyond the grasp of any methodology. Do emotional appeals always work in fund-raising efforts?: an explanation of schema congruity theory and emotion regulation on nonproft and for-profit fund raising

Li, Connie 03 August 2015 (has links)
Across three experiments, I demonstrate that when for-profit organizations focus on the emotional aspects of fund-raising appeals, the evaluations of their appeal decline and they are unsuccessful in generating positive donation intentions; however, this is not the case for nonprofit organizations. In particular, experiment 1 reveals that affective, emotional appeals are viewed more favorably by consumers when they are connected with nonprofit organizations; in contrast, rational, unemotional appeals have greater favorability when they are associated with for-profit organizations. This interaction effect is mediated by the processing fluency, in which the nonprofit organization concepts (vs. for-profit concepts) are congruent with the emotional dimensions of the fund-raising content, causing an ease of processing and positive appeal evaluations. In experiment 2, I find converging evidence that people tend to place little weight on their actual emotional responses in making donation decisions when a for-profit organization is involved. Consumers tend to exhibit a donation flatline, displaying equivalent donation behavior regardless of the actual emotional experiences involved. In experiment 3, I further demonstrate that people's memory performance actually becomes impaired when a high-intensity negative emotional appeal is presented by a for-profit organization but not when it is presented by a nonprofit organization, which again reveals that for-profit organizations’ use of emotional appeals to connect with consumers' affective feelings may backfire. I argue that this is because the activation of for-profit concepts (vs. nonprofit concepts) gives rise to the cognitive system (vs. the affective system), leading people to regulate their emotions via suppression in order to conduct a careful assessment of the appeal content; this results in a donation flatline.

Social Burden or Social Resources: Understanding Chinese Senior Immigrants’ Contributions in Canada

Zhang, Liguo January 2016 (has links)
The thesis stresses these non-economic contributions by senior immigrants should be considered and incorporated in policy making process, including policies relating to the criteria of immigration. This study shows that immigrant sponsorship policy and senior immigrants’ service programs play a large role in deterring or assisting senior immigrants to play a role in Canadian society. / This thesis aims to explore how Chinese senior immigrants perceive individual strengths and how they use these strengths to help their adult immigrant children’s families and participate in community activities. I also examine how they understand their contributions in Canada and the barriers to their active participation in the Canadian society. / Thesis / Master of Social Work (MSW) / The study was carried out through conducting two focus groups in Toronto with Mandarin-speaking Chinese senior immigrants aged 55-80 who came to Canada 2-15 years ago. Informed by the anti-oppressive practice (AOP) approach in social work, findings suggest that those these Chinese seniors play a critical role in stabilizing the immigrant family economy and in subsidizing Chinese newcomer families in the process of early settlement. Chinese senior immigrants actively take part in community works and volunteer in helping others, which have direct and indirect benefits to Canadian economic development.
