A Biogeografia no núcleo de Rio Claro (SP) : análise e avaliação das contribuições científicas no período de 1969-2004 /

Galina, Márcia Helena. January 2006 (has links)
Abstract: The objective of this study was recovery the academic production in Biogeography, developed since 1969 until 2004, by professors, researchers and students of the Geography Department, Master and Doctor Degree of Geography Program, Geosciences and Accurate Sciences Institute of São Paulo State University, at Rio Claro, more directly involved with Biogeography subjects. Before this investigation, a systematic analysis and estimation of the contributions and originalities were made, and a classification of the works in the specific disciplines in Biogeography as well, for the purpose to identify the more contemplate areas and those that are showing more progress. It was given also an emphasis to the analysis of the space and the scales more common in these researches. Spreading the importance of the researchers in Nucleus of Biogeography Studies at Rio Claro to the development and conduction of these researches was a natural process of this work. The Biogeography's genesis was possible due the efforts of the researchers, since a long time, in studying alive-beings' distribution, like the naturalists did. But the development and evolution only had continuity by the dedication of other researchers (the Rio Claro's researchers, for example) in studies about the relationship and the global functionality of the Biogeocenoses and Geossystems. / Doutor

Corporate goals versus philanthropic ideals : the driving force of corporate giving

Held, Jennifer Jane 01 January 1997 (has links)
The study sought to demonstrate that corporate giving is driven by specific corporate goals rather than philanthropic ideals. Furthermore, it examined how corporations use corporate giving as a public relations tool and corporate strategy for enhancing competitiveness. Five research questions were addressed in this study. The first three questions examined if the type of corporation influenced motivations for giving, or the non-profit it will fund, and if the location of corporate facilities determined eligibility for a non-profit. Questions four and five asked if the source of a corporation's contributions budget influenced the motivation for giving and the type of non-profit organization a corporation will fund. Purposive sampling was employed in the study. Only corporations with formal, established corporate giving programs and/or foundations that were located in California were included in the sample. This yielded a sample population of 134 corporations. Questions one, four, and five were answered using ANOVA's. Question two and three were answered respectively through descriptive statistics and through a chi-square statistical test. Results showed that corporations give for more than altruistic reasons, they want results that relate to their corporate goals and strategies. There was evidence to support the relationship between certain types of companies and their motivations for giving. Additionally, data indicated that the type of corporation influences the type of nonprofit they will fund. Another key finding confirmed that the majority of Finally, results showed that the source of a corporation's giving budget cannot be used to predict the type of non-profit a corporation will fund, nor does the source of funding correlate to the motivations for giving.

The Public Policy Implications Of Audit Regulation: Three Studies Related To The Passage Of The Sarbanes-Oxley Act Of 2002

Thornburg, Steven 01 January 2005 (has links)
This dissertation documents and evaluates certain financial and non-financial strategies used by the public accounting profession to influence audit regulation during the policy formation period of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX). The dissertation is comprised of three separate, but related studies. Each study uses prior research in accounting and related disciplines to investigate significant aspects the profession's strategies. The first study evaluates the rationality and effectiveness of political action committee (PAC) contributions paid by the accounting profession to members of Congress. The study finds that the accounting profession rationally allocated more PAC contributions to top congressional leaders and to members of committees having jurisdiction over SOX. The study also finds that the accounting profession allocated more PAC contributions to legislators with a history of pro-business roll call voting behavior and to candidates in close electoral races. This evidence suggests that the profession is motivated to contribute cash to legislators in order to gain access to lobby and to influence the ideological composition of the legislature. A voting model also finds a positive relationship in two instances between PAC contributions and roll call voting favorable to the economic interests of the profession in the House of Representatives. The second study evaluates the effect of these PAC contributions on Committee members' frequency and mode of speech during public hearings related to SOX. Using computerized computational linguistics, the study finds a significant positive association between PAC contributions and speech performance. The study also finds differential uses of modals and certain verbs between legislators depending upon party affiliation. The third paper explores the rhetoric of the accounting profession's public interest ideal and the profession's motivation to invoke public interest arguments in various contexts. I approach my analysis from three different perspectives. The first perspective analyzes the public interest language of the profession as well-intentioned rhetoric. The second approach eschews any well-intentioned motivations on behalf of the profession and casts public interest arguments as propaganda cloaking self-interested action. The third approach deconstructs the public interest ideal as myth, embodying a constellation of elements including cultural values, political doctrine and contingent interests.

The Professional Contributions of Ruth I. Anderson to Business Education

Matthews, Barbara G. (Barbara Gayle) 05 1900 (has links)
This study explored the professional contributions of Ruth I. Anderson, retired professor of Business Administration, The University of North Texas, Denton, Texas. The data for this study were gained through questionnaire responses, a telephone interview, and personal interviews with faculty, staff, students, and business people who have worked closely with Anderson and an interview with Anderson herself. During a literature review, many of the journal articles written by Anderson were read in order to obtain insight into the thoughts and ideas Anderson had toward business education. The dissertation, divided into six chapters, begins with an introduction to the study. Chapter 1 includes the statement of the problem, purposes of the study, research questions, significance of the study, rationale for the study, and design of the study. Chapter 2 contains a biographical sketch of Ruth Anderson and offers a chronology of her career in business education. Anderson's educational philosophy is the focus of Chapter 3. Chapter 4 addresses her major accomplishments and contributions to business education. Anderson's impact on business education is the topic of Chapter 5. A summary is provided in Chapter 6. This study recognized Ruth Anderson as a significant person in the field of business education. Anderson, who was employed in the field for more than forty years, is the author, or co-author, of six books and the contributor of more than eighty articles published in professional journals. Major educational contributions of Ruth Anderson included publications, research, and involvement in professional organizations at the local, state, and national levels. Anderson made an impact on the field of business education through being a role model for former students, being a well-respected colleague, and being well known in the business education profession. Perhaps her greatest gift to the profession was her superior classroom teaching ability. Ruth Anderson's greatest contribution continues today through the work of her former students who have gone on to be business education teachers and professional educators.
