a method to investigate differences in adhesion of microorganisms to materials that contains lignocellulose. The method was tested on a gram-positive (<em>Micrococcus lutea) </em>and one gram-negative (<em>E-coliJM109</em>) bacteria.</p><p>The study was begun by cultivation of the two microorganisms. The cultivation was done to calculate the generation times of the bacteria and to obtain growth curves. Cells from these cultivations were also frozen (-70ºC) and later used for inoculation.</p><p>At STFI-Packforsk AB the total charge on the mass was measured and later a conductivity titration on the mass was executed as well, all to find out more about the different properties of the mass. Properties that in a later part of this study could possibly be linked to the adhesion of cells to the pulp. The adhesion experiments that were executed gave poor results. The adhesion experiment with <em>M. lutea</em> was the only experiment that gave a reproducible result. In this experiment <em>M. lutea </em>was contacted with bleached leaf. A reduction of cells was observed in all of the dilutions where <em>M. lutea</em> had been in contact with the mass. The number of colony forming units of the culture was 1,2×10⁷ before the adhesion and 2×10⁶ subsequently.</p><p> </p>

Trichomonads are anaerobic flagellated protists that are either parasites or commensals. They frequently inhabit digestive, respiratory, and urogenital tracts of vertebrates, including domestic cats and dogs. In these hosts, four trichomonad species has been described: Tetratrichomonas canistomae and Tetratrichomonas felistomae that are commensals of the host oral cavity; Pentatrichomonas hominis, a commensal of intestinal tract that could be found in dogs and cats but also in other mammals including humans; and pathogenic Tritrichomonas foetus that causes, in addition to cattle infection, feline intestinal trichomonosis. Although, trichomonads in dogs and cats are probably of cosmopolitan distribution we have no information about their presence in Czech Republic. The first aim of this study was to distinguish types of trichomonads present in the oral cavity of dogs and cats and to get preliminary epidemiological data. The second aim was to demonstrate the presence of Tritrichomonas foetus in cats and dogs in the Czech Republic and to identify potential risk factors for the disease. Cultivation and nested PCR were used to determine the presence of trichomonads in dogs and cats. The aim of the project was to develop a method to investigate differences in adhesion of microorganisms to materials that contains lignocellulose. The method was tested on a gram-positive (Micrococcus lutea) and one gram-negative (E-coliJM109) bacteria. The study was begun by cultivation of the two microorganisms. The cultivation was done to calculate the generation times of the bacteria and to obtain growth curves. Cells from these cultivations were also frozen (-70ºC) and later used for inoculation. At STFI-Packforsk AB the total charge on the mass was measured and later a conductivity titration on the mass was executed as well, all to find out more about the different properties of the mass. Properties that in a later part of this study could possibly be linked to the adhesion of cells to the pulp. The adhesion experiments that were executed gave poor results. The adhesion experiment with M. lutea was the only experiment that gave a reproducible result. In this experiment M. lutea was contacted with bleached leaf. A reduction of cells was observed in all of the dilutions where M. lutea had been in contact with the mass. The number of colony forming units of the culture was 1,2×107 before the adhesion and 2×106 subsequently.

This paper analyzes how coca cultivation affects the provision of basic household services in Colombia. In particular, I examine how different levels of government responded to an exogenous upsurge in coca cultivation in 1995. I use data from De- mographic Health Surveys to compare Colombian households’ access to electricity (overseen by the federal government) and water (overseen by municipal govern- ments) in coca growing areas relative to non-growing areas. I use both standard and generalized difference-in-differences models. My results indicate that after coca cultivation increased, electricity coverage increased by 7 percentage points more in coca growing departments than non-growing departments. In contrast, there were no differential trends in access to piped water between growing and non-growing departments.

Two field studies examining direct ecological weed control practices were conducted in Lexington, Kentucky. The first evaluated weed control efficacy and influence on yields of several mulches in two organically-managed bell pepper (Capsicum annum) production systems for two years. Peppers were planted in double rows in flat, bare ground or on black polyethylene-covered raised beds with drip irrigation, and four mulches (straw, compost, wood chips, and undersown white dutch clover (Trifolium repens L.) living mulch) were applied to the two production systems. In both years, polyethylene-covered raised beds produced higher yields than the flat, bare ground system. In the second year, the polyethylene-covered bed system coupled with mulching in-between beds with compost or wood chips after cultivation provided excellent weed control and yields. The second field study evaluated the efficacy of soil solarization and shallow cultivation on the invasive and noxious weed johnsongrass over two years (Sorghum halapense). A soil solarization treatment, using clear plastic stretched over soil for eight weeks, and a cultivated bare fallow treatment, utilizing a tractor pulled cultivator implement equipped with sweep blades, were randomly applied during the summers of 2003 and 2004 to a field infested with johnsongrass. Solarized and cultivated plots in both years were lightly tilled 8 months after completion of the initial treatment period. At the conclusion of the experiment the johnsongrass population was significantly reduced in all treatments and in the control plots compared to the original infestation. These two experiments testing direct weed control practices (mulching, cultivation, solarization) were undertaken in the context of an ecological weed management plan that includes long term strategies to reduce weed infestations such as crop rotation, cover cropping, and fertility management that are essential for organic farmers.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the reproductive biology, cytology and phenology of the Australian everlasting daisy Rhodanthe anthemoides and related species. The principal objective was the development of new cultivars with novel bract colours and an assessment of intra-specific variation, mutation breeding and inter-specific hybridisation with R. diffusa, R. manglesii and R. chlorocephala subsp. rosea was carried out.R. anthemoides is a variable eastern state species and plants collected from the New England region of N.S.W have a chromosome number of 2n=22 as does R. diffusa. Other distinct morphological types of R.anthemoides, mostly from the Alpine regions of N.S.W, returned counts of 2n-22 indicating that this species is cytologically divergent and in need of botanical revision with the recognition of at least one new species.R. anthemoides is outbreeding and features a conspicuous involcure, protandry and long stigmatic papillae which aid in pollen presentation and favours insect pollination. The stigma in this species becomes receptive before it is fully exposed and remains receptive for at least 8 days. All of the above species are strongly self-compatible and in R. anthemoides the SI system functions by inhibiting pollen tube penetration of the stigma. (For complete abstract open document)
