Unificación: The Things That Bind Us

Muriel, Kaylani E 01 January 2018 (has links)
Unificación: The Things That Bind Us is a collection of poetry and prose, using New York City's Spanish Harlem and Carolina, Puerto Rico as its backdrop. Each work in this collection revolves around a young man and his family, based on the real-life stories and experiences of the writer's grandfather, Luis. They are crafted with the intent of sharing aspects of Puerto Rican life both in and out of the continental United States with a diverse audience, including those who might not have encountered any elements of the Hispanic culture. Using techniques inspired by writers like Jesús Colon, Esmeralda Santiago, and Piri Thomas, each of the pieces focus on a different element of the Puerto Rican culture. The intent is to give audiences an idea of the cultural values, familial structures, and other norms typical of the Puerto Rican culture by providing glimpses into the everyday lives of the same family on the island and the mainland. The works capture their struggle to make the most of the life they've found themselves in, and emphasize one boy's growth as he attempts to find his role in the family. Overall, the goal of this work is to craft a story that can appeal to all audiences, bringing the Puerto Rican culture to life for all who encounter it.

A modern Wessex of the 'penny post' : letters and the post in Thomas Hardy's novels

Koehler, Karin January 2015 (has links)
This thesis examines the use and representation of letters (and other written messages) in Thomas Hardy's novels, and it considers how Hardy's writing engages with Victorian communication technologies. The 1895 Preface to Far from the Madding Crowd describes Hardy's fictional setting as a ‘a modern Wessex of railways, the penny post, mowing and reaping machines, union workhouses, lucifer matches, labourers who could read and write, and National school children'. The penny post, a communication revolution with an enormous social, economic, and cultural impact, was introduced on 10 January 1840, just a few months before Hardy was born. This thesis aims to demonstrate how a consideration of the material, technological and cultural conditions of communication in Victorian England might reshape our understanding of Hardy's novels, especially of the countless letters, notes, and telegrams which permeate his texts. The written messages in Hardy's novels serve as a means for exploring the process of human communication, and the way this process shapes individual identity, interpersonal relationships, and social interactions alike. Chapter I of this thesis relates Hardy's portrayal of letters to the historical transition from oral tradition to written culture. Chapter II enquires into the relationship between letter writing and notions of privacy and publicity in Hardy's novels. Chapters III and IV argue that Hardy uses letters so as to give a strikingly modern complexity to his representation of human subjectivity and intersubjectivity. The two final chapters investigate how the modalities and technological conditions of written communication influence the construction of Hardy's narratives, the design of his plots. Taken together, the six chapters examine Hardy's perception of one of the most fundamental human activities: communication.

La presse catholique et son rôle dans la vie politique et sociale du Rwanda (1931-1961) / The catholic print media and its role in political and social life of Rwanda (1931-1961)

Munyakayanza, Jean-François 06 March 2013 (has links)
Roman Catholic missionaries arrived in Rwanda in 1900. ln collaboration with the colonial power, they began with economic, social., political and cultural transformations. The role of the Church was evangelization : it was also in charge of the education of the Rwandan society. As the years progressed, the Rwandans were introduced to the culture of writing at the expense of oral practices. Soon the need of wanting to maintain those new baptized people to the Christian faith and especially to extend the training of catechumen which were not efficiently formed, they decided to set up a PRINT MEDIA based in a series of papers published either in the vernacular or in French language. ln addition to the religious teachings, the articles addressed the social and political problems. For example with the first newspaper to be implemented, " Kinyamateka", the authorities the colonial as indigenous used it to send their instructions to the population. After several years the editorial line has been modified and became more concerned with social and political problems of the country without neglecting aspects of the Christian life. This catholic press has contributed greatly to the awareness of readers deal with political currents triggered the eve of independence. For thirty years (1931-1961) it was able to play its role to educate, inform and guide the opinion of its readers.

Does Culture Matter? Understanding Cultural Representation in the Writing of First to Third Generation Mexican American Students in a Transitional High School to College Program

Aguilar, Liz Ann Báez 2010 August 1900 (has links)
This doctoral dissertation intends to contribute to an understanding of the experiences of Mexican American students in a high school to college transitional program and how their culture influences their writing. The transitional program used for the study was located at a community college in the Southwest. This qualitative study incorporated the research instruments of interviews and writing samples using discourse analysis. From the results of this study, several themes emerged and demonstrated how both cultural and social capital are significant in these students’ experiences as they participate in the transitional high school to college program. Research has asserted the high rates of Mexican American students dropping out of school and not completing higher education. This study will enable us to help reduce the current rate of attrition and help students complete their higher education. This study’s findings have implications for the field of adult education because they provide a lens to understand the importance of cultural and social capital as they relate to adult students learning in the classroom.

Romano, Antonella 12 April 2018 (has links)
The present article studies the role of the missionary in the transmission of knowledge between Europe and Asia, particularly China, in the sixteenth century. Thanks to educational institutions established by the Jesuits and other religious orders in various parts of the world, there was an exchange of texts between Europe and the Far East. The result was a first orientalism, with missionaries (Jesuit and otherwise) as its principal agents, which not only translated European texts to China, but also carried knowledge to Europe from the Ming Empire. / El presente artículo estudia el rol del misionero en la transmisión de conocimientos entre Europa y Asia, en particular China, en el siglo XVI.
