Changes in relationship quality across the female menstrual cycle: a diary study of dating couples

Strategic pluralism in human mating behaviors has been explored in recent years. Women may engage in short-term and long-term mating relationships simultaneously to reap the benefits of both strategies. However, little research testing the extent to which the strategies are used within couples has been conducted. According to this model, women typically should engage in long-term mating strategies. However, during ovulation when the risk of conception is greatest, women may enact a short-term mating strategy, particularly if their primary relationship is not perceived to be high in quality or if their current partner is viewed as less attractive. The current study followed 45 couples for 30 consecutive days. Both partners in each couple were asked to complete daily diaries that involved ratings of daily relationship quality, jealousy, and ovulation cues. Additionally, saliva samples were collected from each woman to confirm her ovulation status. Using Hierarchal Linear Modeling (HLM), the data confirmed that women tended to be less interested in their primary relationship during ovulation, the effect being more pronounced if women reported less relationship satisfaction or were mated with less attractive partners. Men also reported that their partners were less focused on the relationship and that their partner's scent was more attractive during ovulation than at other times of the menstrual cycle. These provide some evidence that women tend to focus less on their romantic relationships during ovulation, and that men tend to corroborate their partner' s reports.

Les Benzo[e]pyridoindoles, une nouvelle famille d'inhibiteurs de kinase à activité anti-proliférative / Benzo[e]pyridoindole, the novel kinase inhibitor family with antiproliferative activity

Les Benzo[e]pyridoindoles sont identifiés comme inhibiteurs des kinases Aurora. La molécule la plus active, C1, inhibe efficacement à la fois Aurora B et CHK2. Nous avons donc exploité cette potentialité dans des applications de traitements combinés en se basant sur la spécificité restreinte mais multiple de cet inhibiteur. Nous avons mis en place le traitement combiné (Etoposide et C1) sur des lignées cellulaires et des effets additifs pour H358 et synergiques pour U2OS et HL60 sont notés. Ce traitement empêche efficacement la croissance des sphéroides et l'expansion des xénogreffes cellulaires. Un des avantages majeur de cette combinaison est la diminution des doses d'agents de dommages à l'ADN. C1 ouvre une piste pharmacologique basée sur l'altération simultanée de la mitose et de la réparation. La famille des benzo[e]pyridoindoles possède une forme penta-hétérocyclique avec 3 chaines latérales dont les variations peuvent influencer l'activité inhibitrice. Nous avons donc mesuré l'activité antimitotique de différents benzo[e]pyridoindoles. Cette étude structure/fonction permet de définir la contribution des chaînes latérales dans l'activité inhibitrice et d'orienter les futures synthèses. Nous nous sommes également intéressés au composé C4 qui avait un profil atypique d'inhibition de phosphorylation de l'histone H3. Il inhibe cette phosphorylation uniquement en entrée de mitose. Nous avons ainsi pu montrer que la phosphorylation de l'histone H3 n'est pas nécessaire à l'assemblage des chromosomes. Enfin, nous avons caractérisé l'efficacité de la molécule C21, un composé à forte activité anti-proliférative, sur différents modèles cellulaires et animaux. Ce travail révèle les potentialités multiples des benzo[e]pyridoindoles comme nouvelles molécules anti-prolifératives / Benzo[e]pyridoindole is identified as the novel Aurora inhibiteurs. The most potent compound, C1, inhibits efficiently both Aurora B and CHK2. Thus, we exploited the potency of this molecule in combined treatment applications based on its sharp and multiple specificities. We set up the combined treatments (Etoposide plus C1) on different cell lines and obtained an additive effect on H358 and a synergic one for HL60 and U2OS cells. This combination prevents the spheroid development as well as the cellular xenograft expansion. One of the main advantages of this combination is to decrease the dose of DNA damage agents in therapy leading to the reduction of their toxicity. C1 inhibiting both CHK2 and Aurora B open the way to targeted pharmacology based on simultaneous alteration of mitotic onset and DNA damage defences. Benzo[e]pyridoindole family has a penta-heterocyclic form with 3 lateral chains. The variations of these lateral chains can affect the inhibitory activity of the compounds. We researched the antimitotic efficiency of several benzo[e]pyridoindoles. This structure/function study drives to define the contribution of lateral chains in inhibitory activity and will direct future synthesis. We focused on compound C4 that induced an unusual profile of Histone H3 phosphorylation since it prevents it only in early mitosis. We found that H3-phosphorylation is not essential for chromosome organisation. Finally, we characterized the molecule C21 that is a potent antiproliferative compound both in cellulo and in vivo. This work reveals the potency of benzo[e]pyridoindoles as antiproliferative compounds.

The Off-Design Modelling of a Combined-Cycle Power Plant

The shift towards renewable energy has steered the focus of power plant operation towards flexibility and fast response which are more attainable through the use of combined-cycle power plants. These aspects are required to account for the fluctuation of the supply as well as the demand of power that is associated with renewable energy. Combined-cycle power plants consist of a gas turbine as the topping cycle, forming the core of the plant, and a Rankine cycle with a steam turbine as the bottoming cycle. A component called the Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) forms a connection point between the two cycles. It uses the heat released from the gas turbine to produce high pressure and temperature steam to be sent to the steam turbine. The objective of this project is to develop a model of a combined-cycle power plant in Flownex which can be solved in off-design conditions in order to compare it to plant data. The verification of this model will show that Flownex can be used to effectively and efficiently model a combined-cycle power plant. The process of development of the final Flownex model was achieved using various additional software. Initially, an analytical model was developed in Mathcad (software used for engineering calculations). This software provides a tool for understanding knowns, unknowns and what is being calculated in the system. Manual calculations of the Heat Recovery Steam Generator (HRSG) were done using heat balance equations. A temperature profile of the gas and water/steam in the HRSG was developed so that the duties of each component (economiser, evaporator, superheater) could be calculated. The overall conductance (UA) of each component was calculated in the design mode for the system to be evaluated in off-design mode. The development of an analytical model provided detailed understanding of the process of mathematical modelling used in commercial tools. Thereafter, a model was built in Virtual Plant, a thermodynamic modelling software for assessing plant performance. Virtual Plant uses plant design information and first engineering principles to predict plant performance. Finally, the Flownex model was designed. Flownex uses endpoint values (initial pressure and temperature and outgoing mass flow) and the UA of each component to calculate the characteristics of the flow at each intermediate point. For the single-, double-, and triple-pressure combined-cycle power plant systems, the analytical, Virtual Plant and Flownex models were compared. The results of all the models agreed closely with one another. The triple-pressure design and off-design Virtual Plant and Flownex models were also compared to plant data and it was concluded that Flownex was successful in modelling the design and off-design conditions of a combined-cycle power plant.
