The rise of micromobility, most notably electric standing scooters (e-scooters), has resulted in new challenges for traffic planning and road safety. One such issue is the fact that in most European countries, e-scooter users are obliged to ride their vehicle on cycling infrastructure and thereby share this infrastructure with bicyclists. This increases the use of and, subsequently, demand for bicycle lanes, which is an obvious challenge for transport planning. However, for adequate planning and construction of cycling infrastructure, information on route choice behavior of bicyclists and e-scooter users and its influencing factors is necessary. While research on bicyclists' route choice is well advanced, research on e-scooter riders is still in its infancy. For bicyclists, the presence of bicycle facilities, traffic volume, and travel time are among others particularly important for route choice. However, the question arises whether this also applies to e-scooter riders as vehicle dynamics are different and riders are, at least for now, less skilled due to lack of training and exposition. In order to fill this research gap, we aimed to analyze the determinants for route choice of e-scooter users in comparison to bicyclists in a field study. [from Introduction]

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo principal comparar as percepções de ciclistas e de técnicos do órgão gestor quanto aos fatores de segurança viária em ciclofaixas na cidade de Porto Alegre. Para tanto o trabalho se propõe a: (i) identificar na literatura internacional o Estado da Arte em relação às discussões de segurança viária para ciclistas; (ii) identificar entre os atores do sistema de trânsito da cidade de Porto Alegre quais os principais fatores de segurança viária para ciclistas; (iii) analisar a influência dos fatores de segurança cicloviária em ciclofaixas segundo a percepção dos ciclistas que utilizam ciclofaixas; (iv) analisar a importância atribuída pelos gestores de mobilidade aos fatores de segurança cicloviária na provisão de ciclofaixas; e (v) identificar as lacunas existentes entre a percepção de influência no desempenho de segurança cicloviária (ponto de vista dos ciclistas) com a importância atribuída pelos gestores de mobilidade na provisão de ciclofaixas (ponto de vista dos gestores). A partir do levantamento de fatores relacionados ao contexto de segurança cicloviária para ciclofaixas, foi realizada uma pesquisa junto a ciclistas e gestores solicitando a hierarquização dos atributos de segurança cicloviária. A partir dessas percepções foi possível criar uma matriz que relaciona a influência no desempenho de segurança com a importância atribuída aos atributos de segurança, que permite identificar de forma mais clara as discrepâncias e os alinhamentos entre as percepções. Os resultados apontam oportunidades de melhorias na gestão de atributos de segurança cicloviária em ciclofaixas, bem como sugerem que o órgão gestor pode estar priorizando atributos que não influenciam no desempenho de segurança do ponto de vista dos ciclistas. / This study has as main objective compare the perceptions of influence on the safety of cyclists with the perception of importance attributed by the managing agency to the road safety factors in the provision of cycle lanes in the city of Porto Alegre. Drivers' Attitudes and Behaviors Toward Bicyclists: Intermodal Interactions and Implications for Road Safety

Road safety concerns are a legitimate concern when promoting increased bicycle use. Currently, the share of bicyclist traffic fatalities and injuries is not proportional to its mode share, and presents both a public health concern and a disincentive to people taking up or continuing to bicycle for transportation. Bicycling is not an inherently dangerous activity; automobile drivers pose the most risk of harm in crashes with bicyclists. Despite that, drivers' attitudes and behaviors toward bicyclists have not enjoyed much systematic study, particularly in the United States. This research explored the dimensions of drivers' attitudes toward bicyclists, including implicit bias and social attitudes, and examined the relationships between these attitudes and drivers' self-reported behaviors. The online survey included a cognitive test of respondents' implicit preference between drivers and bicyclists. The research questions are detailed in the introduction (Chapter 1), followed by a review of selected literature (Chapter 2) and detailed methodology (Chapter 3). The first set of results (Chapter 4) explores the potential usefulness of the implicit method and the attitude measures developed for this research, and presents an analysis of drivers' attitudes and what predicts more positive attitudes toward bicyclists. The second set of results (Chapter 5) extends the analysis to drivers' self-report behaviors, and how demographics, individual travel behavior, attitudes, and the built environment predict drivers' behaviors related to bicyclist safety. The dissertation concludes with a discussion of the contribution to the literature on driver attitudes and behaviors, and the implications for both practice and research.

Where do people direct their attention while cycling? A comparison of adults and children

Cycling in urban environments requires the ability to distinguish between relevant and irrelevant targets quickly and reliably, so that potential hazards can be anticipated and avoided. In two experiments, we investigated where adults and children direct their attention when viewing videos filmed from a cyclist’s perspective. We wanted to see if there were any differences in the responses given by experienced adult cyclists, inexperienced adult cyclists, and child cyclists. In Experiment 1, 16 adults (19–33 years) were asked to watch ten videos and to point out things they would pay attention to by tapping a touchscreen (pointed out locations). Afterwards, they were asked to explain their answers. In Experiment 2, 17 adults (19–34 years) and 17 children (11–12 years) performed the same task with the same ten videos, but they were not asked to explain their answers afterwards. The data sets from these two experiments were pooled, creating three groups: ten experienced adult cyclists, 23 inexperienced adult cyclists and 17 children. A total of 23 clearly visible, traffic-relevant targets (pre-specified targets) had previously been identified in the videos. We investigated whether the participants’ pointed-out locations matched these targets (and if so, how fast they responded in pointing them out). We also investigated the number and vertical/horizontal dispersion of these pointed-out locations on the touchscreen. Adults pointed out more locations than children, especially pedestrians and cyclists. This result suggests that, while children focussed as well as adults on cars (arguably the most salient hazard), they were less able to identify other hazards (such as pedestrians or other cyclists). The children had also a larger vertical dispersion and a larger between-participant variation than the adults. Adults were faster at tapping the pre-specified targets and they missed them less often. Overall, the results suggest that 11–12 year old-cyclists have worse situation awareness in traffic than adults.

Cyclists' choice of lateral position and feeling of safety between tram tracks, sharrows and parked cars

Cycling is good for the environment, healthy and affordable [1 ]. However, these benefits are offset by the risk of being involved in traffic crashes [1], with infrastructure characteristics like tram tracks or parked cars increasing aforementioned risk [2, 3]. Bicycle crashes with tram tracks can occur when cyclists turn onto streets with tram tracks or cross them for other reasons, such as avoiding parked cars on the side (oftentimes related to sudden maneuvers to avoid collisions with the door of a parked car being opened) [4]. Such collisions, referred to as dooring crashes, account for a significant proportion of bicycle crashes [3]. Nevertheless, the majority of cyclists ride in the so-called dooring zone, which is the area next to parked cars where dooring crashes can occur. If the cyclists' lateral distance to parked cars is large enough, the risk of being involved in a dooring crash can be eliminated [2]. Cyclists' position on the road can be influenced by descriptive norms which reflect a typical or normal behavior: If many other cyclists ride within the dooring zone, then the descriptive norm in this situation is to ride in the dooring zone [5]. People may also ride in the dooring zone because they are convinced that important people around them would approve of this behavior (injunctive norm), e.g. because it is communicated verbally. Apart from influencing cyclists' choice of position through norms, installing bicycle lanes with buffer zones to keep cyclists out of the dooring zone would be a solution. However, particularly in urban areas, a lack of space can make this impossible. Additionally, if tram tracks ran on the road, it is not always practical to mark bicycle lanes or protective lanes, especially when there is little space to the right of the outer tram track. In connection with frequent bicycle crashes roads with tram tracks, it is discussed whether cyclists might particularly often ride within the dooring zone there as not to have to cross the track.s [3, 6]. In those cases where marking of bicycle lanes or protective lan.es is not feasible due to width or tram track constraints, bicycle pictograms, so-called sharrows, can be marked in the middle of the lane as a measure aimed at encouraging cyclists to choose a position outside of the dooring rone and to increase their perceived safety, another factor influencing the positional choice [2]. To date, a joint experimental variation of the presence of tram tracks, parked cars, and sharrows with the aim of investigating cyclists' position on the road and their feeling of safety has not yet t.aken place. Two online studies were carried out to address this research gap, with cyclists being asked to indicate their perceived safety and their preferred position on the road based on images of a traffic situation in which the presence of tram tracks, parked cars and sharrows was varied.
