Critical path tracing as a diagnostic evaluation method for sequential systems

Diagnostic tests are designed to detect and isolate faults in sequential systems. The problem is to evaluate the effectiveness of the design. For stuck faults a diagnostic model can be used. A fault simulation strategy is presented for generating this model. First, definitions, for identifying critical inputs are derived. A definition is a statement of the conditions to sensitize an input. Then a fault free simulation is used to generate a critical value array. A critical path is traced through the sensitized inputs marked in the array using a critical value array tracing algorithm that is developed. This algorithm traces a path back in time, as required for a sequential system, to identify detectable faults for the model.

Performance evaluation and waveform design for MIMO radar

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar has been receiving increasing attention in recent years due to the dramatic advantages offered by MIMO systems in communications. The amount of energy reflected from a common radar target varies considerably with the observation angle, and these scintillations may cause signal fading which severely degrades the performance of conventional radars. MIMO radar with widely spaced antennas is able to view several aspects of a target simultaneously, which realizes a spatial diversity gain to overcome the target scintillation problem, leading to significantly enhanced system performance. Building on the initial studies presented in the literature, MIMO radar is investigated in detail in this thesis. First of all, a finite scatterers model is proposed, based on which the target detection performance of a MIMO radar system with arbitrary array-target configurations is evaluated and analyzed. A MIMO radar involving a realistic target is also set up, whose simulation results corroborate the conclusions drawn based on theoretical target models, validating in a practical setting the improvements in detection performance brought in by the MIMO radar configuration. Next, a hybrid bistatic radar is introduced, which combines the phased-array and MIMO radar configurations to take advantage of both coherent processing gain and spatial diversity gain simultaneously. The target detection performance is first assessed, followed by the evaluation of the direction finding performance, i.e., performance of estimating angle of arrival as well as angel of departure. The presented theoretical expressions can be used to select the best architecture for a radar system, particularly when the total number of antennas is fixed. Finally, a novel two phase radar scheme involving signal retransmission is studied. It is based on the time-reversal (TR) detection and is investigated to improve the detection performance of a wideband MIMO radar or sonar system. Three detectors demanding various amounts of a priori information are developed, whose performance is evaluated and compared. Three schemes are proposed to design the retransmitted waveform with constraints on the transmitted signal power, further enhancing the detection performance with respect to the TR approach.

Simulating clouds with procedural texturing techniques using the GPU

Taking advantage of the latest advancements in computer graphics hardware allows modeling dynamic natural phenomena such as clouds. Specifically, utilizing procedural techniques and high-level shading languages, it is possible to produce considerably more realistic simulations. This thesis designed and implemented a visual simulation component, which renders convincing clouds using procedural noise-based texture mapping techniques. Both traditional rendering and shader-enabled rendering supported by the OpenGL Shading Language are utilized. This component has been included in the Delta3d simulation engine and is used to create convincing clouds in outdoor simulations while the performance penalty imposed is considered acceptable. Custom tools have been developed for easy noise texture parameterization and cross-platform compatibility has been demonstrated. / Lieutenant, Hellenic Navy

Evaluation of Monetary Policy in Ethiopia: An Empirical Study

In this paper, a structural vector auto regression (SVAR) approach is used to empirically investigate the effects of monetary policy shocks on output (measured by real GDP) and prices (measured by consumer price index) in Ethiopia. We isolated the SVAR structural shocks by imposing restrictions on the long- run behavior of the variables in the model, which places a recursive restriction on the disturbances of the SVAR. We considered three alternative policy instruments i.e. broad money supply (M2), lending rate and the real effective exchange rate (REER). We find evidence that price-based nominal anchors (Interest rate and REER) have an effect on real output, a modest effect of the lending rate while a significant effect of REER is documented, with a slightly faster speed of adjustment. The goal of this thesis was to design the support for output breakpoints in the Java language and implement the designed solution including integration into the Eclipse IDE. An output breakpoint represents a location in an output media (e.g. file, standard output or socket) where the execution of program should stop. The location in the output media is generalized as a stop condition - it can be in the form of absolute position, a particular line and a character or an occurrence of a text string. The designed solution is based on observing the classes responsible for output using entry method breakpoints that are a standard part of the Java language. This solution is dependent on a particular version and implementation of JRE because some of observed methods are not a part of public Java API.

Output gap belongs to standard indicators of inflationary pressures used in central banks. The aim of this paper is to find the answer to the question, whether we can consider output gap as a suitable indicator of inflation for the Czech economy. First hypothesis, which we analysed is that we can estimate output gap only with uncertainty. For confirmation or refutation of this hypothesis we used ten models of estimation of output gap. The second hypothesis is that output gap can be used as suitable indicator of inflation. For testing of this hypothesis we chose gap model from Coe, McDetmott (1997) -- with the level of output gap and the change (difference) of output gap. All tests confirmed, that central bank can use inflation as a useful indicator of inflation.

Análise quantitativa dos resultados dos testes de controle de qualidade em radioterapia / Quantitative analysis of results for quality assurance in radiotherapy

Os aceleradores lineares representam a mais importante, prática e versátil produtores de raios-X de alta energia em radioterapia. O comportamento funcional destes equipamentos pode variar devido a defeitos eletrônicos, falhas de componentes ou rupturas mecânicas, ou então podem variar devido ao deterioramento e envelhecimento de seus componentes. A manutenção da qualidade dos tratamentos depende essencialmente da estabilidade dos aceleradores e do controle de qualidade das instituições para monitorar desvios nos parâmetros do feixe. O objetivo deste trabalho consiste em avaliar e analisar a estabilidade do fator de calibração dos aceleradores lineares, bem como os demais parâmetros dosimétricos normalmente incluídos em um programa de controle de qualidade em radioterapia. A média dos fatores de calibração dos aceleradores para o período de aproximadamente quatro anos para os Clinacs 600C e 6EX foram (0,998 ± 0,012) e (0,996 ± 0,014), respectivamente. Para o Clinac 2100CD de 6 MV e 15 MV foi (1,008 ± 0,009) e (1,006 ± 0,010), respectivamente, em um período de aproximadamente quatro anos. Através de análises estatísticas nos três aceleradores lineares verificou-se que os coeficientes de variação dos fatores de calibração apresentaram valores inferiores a 2% o que mostra uma homogeneidade nos dados. Através do cálculo da distribuição normal dos fatores de calibração, verificou-se que para os Clinacs 600C e 2100CD, é esperada uma probabilidade de que em mais de 90% dos casos os valores estejam dentro dos limites aceitáveis segundo o protocolo TG-142, enquanto que para o Clinac 6EX é esperado em torno de 85% uma vez que esse acelerador apresentou diversas trocas de componentes. Os valores do TPR20,10 dos três aceleradores são praticamente constantes e dentro dos limites aceitáveis segundo o protocolo TG-142. Pode-se concluir que um estudo detalhado dos dados do fator de calibração dos aceleradores e do TPR20,10 a partir de um ponto de vista quantitativo, é extremamente útil em um programa de garantia de qualidade. / The linear accelerators represent the most important, practical and versatile source of ionizing radiation in radiotherapy. These functional characteristics influence the geometric and dosimetric accuracy of therapeutic doses applied to patients. The performance of this equipment may vary due to electronic defects, component failures or mechanical breakdowns, or may vary due to the deterioration and aging of components. Maintaining the quality of care depends on the stability of the accelerators and quality control of the institutions to monitor deviations in the parameters of the beam. The aim of this study is to assess and analyze the stability of the calibration factor of linear accelerators, as well as the other dosimetric parameters normally included in a program of quality control in radiotherapy. The average calibration factors of the accelerators for the period of approximately four years for the Clinac 600C and Clinac 6EX were (0,998 ± 0,012) and (0,996 ± 0,014), respectively. For the Clinac 2100CD 6 MV and 15 MV was (1,008 ± 0,009) and (1,006 ± 0,010), respectively, in a period of approximately four years. Statistical analysis of the three linear accelerators was found that the coefficient of variation of calibration factors had values below 2% which shows a consistency in the data. By calculating the normal distribution of calibration factors, we found that for the Clinac 600C and Clinac 2100CD, is an expected probability that more than 90% of cases the values are within acceptable limits according to the TG-142, while for the Clinac 6EX is expected around 85% since this had several exchanges of accelerator components. The values of TPR20,10 of three accelerators are practically constant and within acceptable limits according to the TG-142. It can be concluded that a detailed study of data from the calibration factor of the accelerators and TPR20,10 from a quantitative point of view, is extremely useful in a quality assurance program.
