Dating Deltas

January 2017 (has links)
acase@tulane.edu / Deltas are highly complex landscapes characterized by dynamic processes of growth and decline that may be driven by a multitude of factors. A greater level of understanding of deltaic processes is now possible through luminescence dating approaches, which enable the direct dating of clastic deposits. This dissertation applies luminescence dating to identify fundamental mechanisms of delta evolution in a pre-anthropogenic system over centennial to millennial timescales. Topics explored here include the rates and patterns of land-building, and the primary drivers, rates, and spatial variability of subsidence. In addition to applications, this dissertation makes contributions to the science of luminescence dating through the development of new techniques and assessments of luminescence characteristics of sediment in two megadeltas, the Mississippi and Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna deltas. The results herein show that river-dominated deltas operating under natural conditions grow in a radial pattern where sediment resources are directed by avulsions that occur over a broad spatial zone extending well landward of the delta, and decline in elevation due largely to compaction induced by sediment loading. Zeroing (or bleaching) of the luminescence clock is tested through a new "Bleaching Index" that compares multiple signals obtained from polymineral sediment, and through measurements of modern analogues. These tests show that quartz silt is likely to be well-bleached in large river-delta systems, a finding which extends the prospects and geographic range of luminescence dating. / 1 / Elizabeth L. An Exploration of Eight Dimensions of Self-Disclosure with Relationship Satisfaction

Billeter, Courtney Bly 27 August 2002 (has links)
This research extends previous work on measuring eight dimensions of self-disclosure on intimate relationship satisfaction. 134 individuals answered a questionnaire concerning how they self-disclosed to their partner. I predicted that overall self-disclosure (all eight dimensions combined) would be positively related to degree of relationship satisfaction. Second, overall self-disclosure would be positively related to degree of relationship satisfaction when controlling for gender, length of relationship, and whether the respondent was referring to a current or former partner. Furthermore, I predicted that each dimension of self-disclosure would be positively related to relationship satisfaction. Results indicate that not all of my hypotheses were supported. For example, one's tastes and interests and one's self-feelings were statistically negatively significant with relationship satisfaction. Self-disclosure is an important part of relationship satisfaction, while distinguishing which dimension of self-disclosure had more importance proved to be a more complicated factor. / Master of Science

Den virtuella dejtingvärlden : En studie om användandet av nätdejtingsajter / The Virtual World of Dating : A study about the usage of online dating sites

Araya, Madeleine, Chan, Malin January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study has been to investigate the virtual world that people are part of on online dating sites. To do this we have investigated two different research questions, which are the following: What functions do the online dating sites provide? Why and how are the online dating sites being used by their members? In order to gather information about these matters, we have used a qualitative method consisting of participating observation, scrutinizing and single person interviews. Our results indicate that people have different goals with their usage of online dating sites; some are looking for love, a long-term relationship while others are looking for sexual contact. There are many different online dating sites to choose from depending on the users’ objective. The online dating sites we have observed offer similar functions. To find someone of interest most of our interviewees use the search function. The way of initializing contact when finding someone of interest varies between our interviewees, but most of them send flirts and mails. Online dating offers a possible alternative for people to find a potential partner.

To Date or Not to Date? Religious and Racial Dating Choices Among Conservative Christians

Stillwell, Lorinda Clare 08 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on exploring the reasons behind dating choices concerning religion and race. Studies report that race is more important than religion in choosing dating partners. Understanding religious and racial dating preferences and choices can help uncover group relations in the larger society. The present study examines the reasons why someone may be willing to date a group outside their religion but not a group outside their race. A pre-interview survey questionnaire was used to locate interview participants. The first 20 respondents who met the specific criteria of being White, single, and a conservative Christian were selected for a qualitative phone interview. To qualify, the respondents needed to be willing to date at least one group that was not Christian, but unwilling to date certain groups outside their race. The interviews were transcribed and the content was analyzed for patterns and themes using the Grounded theory. The results revealed that all the respondents except one were unwilling to date a Black individual and five were unwilling to date any race but White. The least likely to be considered as dating partners for religious groups were the Muslims and atheists. For race, many of the participants viewed Hispanics and Asians as more culturally or physically similar to them than Blacks. The main reasons why the respondents indicated they were willing to date Jewish and agnostic individuals were that they perceived them as similar to themselves in their belief systems. For both religion and race, the respondents were more willing to consider dating groups that were considered to have less stigma in society. The concept of stigma provides a framework for examining the respondents dating choices.

Att hitta kärleken online : En kvantitativ studie om nätdejting

Svanström, Victoria January 2022 (has links)
The development of digitization has resulted in people communicating more digitally. People keep in touch with friends and family on the respective platforms, but we arealso looking for new contacts and relationships online nowadays. Studies have shownthat it was in the 90’s that the phenomenon of online dating started and since then avariety of online dating sites have developed. Today, Tinder is the most used onlinedating site in Sweden. The purpose of the use of online dating sites differs and so doesthe presentation of the people on each online dating profile. The purpose of this essay isto investigate how people choose to present themselves on an online dating site, whatthey think about other people ́s presentations and how they act in the interaction withother people that they meet through an online dating site. The method used for this essay is a quantitative survey that has been distributed on various platforms online. The target group is women and men aged 15–50 who aresingle and active / have been active on some form of online dating site. The survey was answered by 120 respondents. The results of the survey shown a majority looking for a furture partner on each onlinedating site where the personality of a partner is prioritized before appearance. The respondents want to be portrayed as a possible partner, and as a funny and nice person on the online dating site rather than just showing off the super finical qualities ofthemselves. Despite the aspects that appearance is of high priority that previous researchpresents, my results of the survey show something else. The respondents consider themselves as honest people in the search for a future partner.

Cavalcade of the Uninspired: One Woman’s Adventures in the Strange World of (Mostly Online) Post-Divorce Dating

Holt, Michelle 19 May 2017 (has links)
This collection of nonfiction essays explores one woman’s journey of reentering the world of dating after getting divorced in her forties. Neither an exposé of online dating practices nor a dating how-to manual, these essays strive instead to examine the amusing, poignant, and often tragic ways in which we humans are aligned in our frailty, our brokenness, and ultimately in our redemptive search for love and higher meaning in life. They are also a reminder that there is much that is intrinsically valuable about this search, even when it is not ultimately successful.
