She the people : personal politics and feminist advocacy as the democratic idealTaylor, Mary Anne, active 21st century 18 September 2014 (has links)
In an American democracy, created by the people and for the people, contemporary political women remain a marginalized voice in policy making and governance. My dissertation celebrates personal politics, and posits a landscape for thinking about democracy and advocacy in terms of political feminism. Specifically, I am concerned with how theorizing feminist interventions in the rhetorical canon operationalize material advancements for women in the political public sphere. To that end, this dissertation will introduce two systemic obstacles for political women, including, first, an ideological problem, where the political infrastructure and the press apparatus exacerbate a patriarchal gendered game; and second, an epistemological problem, where gendered language and gendered journalism are used to discipline political women. In the search for how political women can challenge and thwart political hegemony, I build from feminist rhetorical theory, political theory, and public sphere theory to offer rhetorical care as a vehicle for feminist political advocacy in the American political public sphere. Operationalizing feminist care through the case study chapters of Hillary Clinton and Wendy Davis, respectively, I argue that both political women successfully shifted gendered narratives for women in political leadership. / text

Påverkar polariserande solglasögon avståndsbedömningen?Hansson, Jennie January 2010 (has links)

The creative symbiosis of composer and performer (An examination of collaborative practice in partially improvised works)Melvin, Andrew January 2010 (has links)
This thesis comprises a portfolio of compositions with supporting commentary in addition to a general commentary on past and contemporary models of performance practice. The compositions all use elements of improvisation and are documented in recorded and score formats. Recordings and discussion of the rehearsal process of these works are also included. The thesis is divided into four parts. The first, entitled ‘Context’, examines issues of performance practice through reference to both historical and contemporary models. In this regard, particular attention is given to the work of Miles Davis and Peter Wiegold. Parts 2, 3 and 4 consist of the portfolio of original compositions with sub-headings as follows: ‘Beginnings’, ‘Transition’ and ‘Current Projects’. As a part of the commentary on the portfolio, the role of the performer as creative artist will also be examined.

Survey of Bicycle Trail-Users in New Orleans: Characteristics, Attitudes and Implications for PlanningJudge, Coleen 17 December 2010 (has links)
This thesis focuses on bicyclists using the Jefferson Davis multi-use, off-street trail in the City of New Orleans. Understanding user characteristics and perceptions of bicyclists will help inform planning, policy, and design related to bicycle infrastructure. This thesis uses a review of the relevant literature, intercept surveys of bicyclists, and automatic bicycle counts to understand how user characteristics can influence successful bicycle design, policies, and planning. The user characteristics of the bicyclists on the Jefferson Davis Trail provide us with information on who is using the trail, how often, why, and what users would like to see improved. Planners need to understand the motivations of the current and potential trail users. Making bicycling a safe mode of travel in an urban area involves influencing citizens at both the socialecological level and the travel-behavioral level, providing the culture around bicycling and the facilities available to do so.

Blood in the GrassDavis, James Trent 18 May 2012 (has links)
This paper thoroughly examines the thesis film, Blood in the Grass. Each area of the film's production is carefully analyzed, including writing, directing, production design, cinematography, editing, sound, and technology and workflow. In addition to these areas, the background and ideology of the filmmaker provides a context for the choices made in production. This overall analysis discusses the effectiveness of the goals set by the filmmaker for the film to be an emotionally effective commentary on capital punishment, and to be conducive to the short film medium.

Nitrate and phosphorus loadsSamaneh Saadat (5930210) 16 January 2019 (has links)
<p>Daily nitrate-N, soluble
reactive phosphorus and total phosphorus loads in subsurface drainage were
quantified in an agricultural farm field in eastern Indiana (Davis Purdue
Agricultural Center).</p>
<p><b>Site description:</b> The data was collected from the field W at
Davis Purdue Agricultural Center (DPAC) located in eastern Indiana. Field W is
relatively flat (slope < 1%), with 0.16 km2 total area, divided into four
plots, northwest (NW), southwest (SW), northeast (NE), and southeast (SE) with
areas ranging from 3.5 ha to 3.7 ha. The four soil series at the site range
from very poorly to somewhat poorly drained, with a small portion of moderately
well drained series. The subsurface drainage system was installed in 2004, with
10-cm laterals having an approximate depth of 1 m and spacing of 14 m,
resulting in a drainage intensity of 1.1 cm day-1 and drainage coefficient of 1
cm day-1. Drainage in the SE and NW plots was controlled at two different
levels during some periods depending on the season, while the SW and NE were
allowed to drain freely. This field has been in a corn-soybean rotation since
2011 and in continuous corn before that, and was managed using chisel-plow tillage
in the fall and field cultivator tillage in the spring during the study period.
Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers were applied at different rates
prior to and after planting corn. Phosphorus was also applied prior to soybean
planting in two of the three soybean years. The rate and timing of fertilizer
applications were uniform for all plots and were based on Purdue Extension
recommendations. Further details of the site management and data are available
in Abendroth et al. (2017). More information about this site and
fertilizer application can be found in Saadat et al., 2018.</p>
<p><b>Sampling strategy and
load calculation:</b> Automated water
samplers (ISCO) were used to draw samples from the drainage outlet flow of each
plot. Samples were collected every hour when flow was present except during
winter, and combined into weekly composite samples varying in length from twice
a week to biweekly. During the winter, water samples were collected manually to
avoid freezing problems, approximately every week whenever flow was present. Samples
were kept frozen until analysis and then analyzed on a SEAL Analytical AQ2
auto-analyzer to be tested for nitrate+nitrite-N (referred to nitrate-N),
soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and total phosphorus (TP) according to US EPA
methods.</p>
<p>Daily nitrate-N, SRP and
TP concentration values needed for the load calculations were estimated using
linear interpolation. After estimating daily concentrations, daily loads were
calculated by multiplying the daily drain flow by estimated daily
concentrations.</p>

Analysis of Long-Term Streamflow Patterns on Two Davis County Experimental Watersheds in UtahGlasser, Stephen P. 01 May 1969 (has links)
The influence of aspect on water yield variability over a long period, 1936-1964, was studied at two small, mountainous watersheds within the Davis County Experimental Watershed near Farmington, Utah.
North-facing Miller Creek is densely vegetated by a conifer-aspen forest and mountain brush. Miller Creek's yield was more variable for daily, monthly, seasonal, and annual flows than yields from south-west facing Halfway Creek which is covered by mountain brush. Differences between watersheds in annual yield and snowmelt season runoff were nonsignificant.
The snowmelt runoff season extended for an average of 65 days on both watersheds, but it began 24 days earlier (March 29) on Halfway. Approximately 57 percent of the mean annual flow of 19.4 inches on Halfway, and 68 percent of Miller's mean annual yield of 17.9 inches occurred during the snowmelt runoff season.
One-third of Halfway's annual flow and one-half of Miller's occurred during the May 15 to September 15 growing season when only one-fifth of the annual precipitation of 42 inches usually fell. The difference between the growing season flows from the two watersheds was significant, with Miller's flow greater by 3.4 inches.
