Capturing the design process: documentation, reflection, and reuse / Fånga design processen: dokumentation, reflection och återanvändning

Sarampasina, Kyriaki January 2017 (has links)
In a design agency, where time is of essence, it is interesting to see how documentation and reflection, of the design process can be captured by a digital tool with the aim to reuse design. In this thesis, such a tool was deployed at the design agency Apegroup. The main question this study investigates, is the challenge and benefit of a tool that enhances documentation, reflection, and reusability of a design process. The tool was primary inspired by the Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Documenting Design Process area. Interviews, ideation, prototyping, coding, testing and evaluation is some of the activities that were conducted. The results revealed that different design roles values different elements during the design process, which makes it challenging to develop a tool that has value for all. Documentation of activities in the tool was mainly beneficial for the role design director and the value of gathering all internal information about the design process. Reflection of activities in the tool made some of the designers reflect more, but it was challenging to engage all designers. Working with reusability was challenging due to the tool’s need of being used continuously. In the design agency context, the most challenging aspect was time, and competing with the designers’ perceived benefit.

Systemic modeling of industrial processes continuous improvement through Six Sigma method and Petri nets.

Mororó, Bruno Oliveira 24 October 2008 (has links)
The globalization strengthens the necessity for companies to improve its processes and products in order to remains competitive and to attend expectations of a dynamic market and shareholders each time more demanding and eager to maximize their profits. The continuous improvement mentioned above, is not related only to the quality perceived by the final consumer, but also to the quality and reliability of the production processes. Therefore, as better processe the company gets, as better would be their final products and as lower would be the costs. However, the question is wheter a continuous improvement using Six Sigma could benefit from the design documentation for the target process returning also an improved documentation after the cycle is completed. This work considers the use of Petri Nets for production processes modeling - even if any other design and modeling representation would return similar results - supporting the Six Sigma methodology application. The main result is a proposition of continuous improvement life cycle that maintains the design documentation consistent and up-to-date. Thus, this work pursuits the integration between the teams that design processes and those who implement them in the manufacturing plant. To show the potential of the models analysis during Six Sigma projects a case study is analyzed for the Press Shop area in an Automotive Industry.

On Using UML Diagrams to Identify and Assess Software Design Smells

Haendler, Thorsten January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Deficiencies in software design or architecture can severely impede and slow down the software development and maintenance progress. Bad smells and anti-patterns can be an indicator for poor software design and suggest for refactoring the affected source code fragment. In recent years, multiple techniques and tools have been proposed to assist software engineers in identifying smells and guiding them through corresponding refactoring steps. However, these detection tools only cover a modest amount of smells so far and also tend to produce false positives which represent conscious constructs with symptoms similar or identical to actual bad smells (e.g., design patterns). These and other issues in the detection process demand for a code or design review in order to identify (missed) design smells and/or re-assess detected smell candidates. UML diagrams are the quasi-standard for documenting software design and are often available in software projects. In this position paper, we investigate whether (and to what extent) UML diagrams can be used for identifying and assessing design smells. Based on a description of difficulties in the smell detection process, we discuss the importance of design reviews. We then investigate to what extent design documentation in terms of UML2 diagrams allows for representing and identifying software design smells. In particular, 14 kinds of design smells and their representability in UML class and sequence diagrams are analyzed. In addition, we discuss further challenges for UML-based identification and assessment of bad smells.
