Eternal Bits

Smith, MacKenzie 07 1900 (has links)
The MIT Libraries is addressing the problem of maintaining and sharing digital content over the long haul with a project called DSpace. For this digital repository, a simple, open-source software application was built that not only accepts digital materials and makes them available on the Web but also puts them into a data management regime that helps to preserve them for generations to come. Other organizations worldwide have begun similar efforts including Cornell University, and the University of Toronto, the University of Cambridge. DSpace has a growing group of committed programmers distributed across the globe who continually maintain and improve it.

DSpace: Durable Digital Documents

Chudnov, Daniel January 2001 (has links)
DSpace is a joint development project of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries and Hewlett-Packard Company. Its mission is to establish a library service to capture, distribute, and preserve the digital, intellectual output of the MIT community. We are developing a software platform for long-term digital content storage and preservation, and implementing this platform as a service of the Libraries.

DSpace: An Open Source Dynamic Digital Repository

Smith, MacKenzie, Barton, Mary, Bass, Mick, Branschofsky, Margret, McClellan, Greg, Stuve, Dave, Tansley, Robert, Walker, Julie Harford 01 1900 (has links)
For the past two years the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Libraries and Hewlett-Packard Labs have been collaborating on the development of an open source system called DSpace™ that functions as a repository for the digital research and educational material produced by members of a research university or organization. Running such an institutionally-based, multidisciplinary repository is increasingly seen as a natural role for the libraries and archives of research and teaching organizations. As their constituents produce increasing amounts of original material in digital formats—much of which is never published by traditional means—the repository becomes vital to protect the significant assets of the institution and its faculty. The first part of this article describes the DSpace system including its functionality and design, and its approach to various problems in digital library and archives design. The second part discusses the implementation of DSpace at MIT, plans for federating the system, and issues of sustainability.

Objectives: Bringing 33 year of Students Projects one common platform: Institutional Repositories using Dspace software. Methods: Open Source Software -Dspace software is being used for this purpose by converting projects into e-formats. Presentation: 20 minutes: Results: it is a continues process the database of project will be an asset to the institution. SDMCET is an autonomous institution which has more than 33 years of history in engineering education in India. The enormous development in engineering education has kindled the growth of technical innovations of young minds. These young minds are “tech savvy” and bring in new ideas in the form of the projects. The knowledge centre has built Institutional Repository using open source software, Dspace. This is popularly known as “Dspace @ sdmcet.” Today there are more than 3000 students who are perusing their engineering education. The history of database has thirty years of data of projects. These student projects form a very important “innovativeness” of technical explorations which add value to institution which is part of the course. This project is supported by the institution and is a continuous process of archiving and preservation. The plans and implementation is being described in this paper.

Analýza institucionálních repozitářů provozovaných v systému DSpace v České republice / The analysis of the institutional repositories in the Czech Republic using DSpace system

Kovaříková, Lenka January 2019 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to analyze, compare and evaluate available institutional repositories (IR) in Czechia, which are stored in the DSpace system. The development of IR and its circumstances is described through comparison of information available from registry of repositories, journals articles, presentations, and qualitative interviews. Each IR was compared by version, area of expertise, types of stored documents, organization, language mutations, number of records, administration of data entry and data exit processes, system login and user rights. A bigger part of this thesis is dedicated to search options and metadata. As a result of that the analysis of collected data brought a summary of characteristics and system options. It highlighted the positives such as the system integration of repositories, as well as negatives such as overlooking of subject description. The result of the analysis are system atributes and options. brought a summary of the system's features and capabilities. She pointed out the positives as the ability of systematic interconnection of repositories and shortcomings in the form of neglecting the subject description.

Modeling and Hardware-in-the-loop Simulations of Contactor Dynamics : Mechanics, Electromagnetics and Software / Modellering och hardware-in-the-loopsimulering av kontaktordynamik : Mekanik, elektromagnetism och mjukvara

Tjerngren, Jon January 2014 (has links)
This master thesis’s subject is to model an ABB contactor’s dynamics and to develop a hardware-in-the-loop simulation environment. The hardware-in-the-loop method utilizes computer models that are simulated in a real-time simulator. The real-time simulator is connected to hardware components. A contactor is an electrically controlled mechanical switching device and it is used in circuits where large currents can occur. In this thesis, the contactor is divided into three separate subsystems and models are developed for each of them. The three subsystems correspond to the contactor’s mechanics, electromagnetics and electronic components. Computer models are implemented in MATLAB and Simulink to realize the subsystems. The hardware part, of the hardware-in-the-loop simulations, consists of electronic parts that are not modeled. To connect the hardware part to a real-time simulator, from dSPACE, a hardware interface was constructed. This report focuses on the modeling of the mechanics and the electromagnetics as well as the software implementations. The thesis work was carried out in collaboration with another student. The focuses of his report are the modeling of the electronics and the construction of the hardware interface. Validation of the hardware-in-the-loop simulations is done by using measurements collected from a real contactor. The conclusion is that the simulations of the contactor’s behavior correspond well with a real contactor.

Open Source Software for Creation of Digital Library: A Comparative Study of Greenstone Digital Library Software & DSpace

Randhawa, Sukhwinder 12 1900 (has links)
Softwares now-a-days have become the life line of modern day organizations. Organizations cannot think of doing their tasks effectively and efficiently without softwares. The extremely competitive environment, zero deficiency and enhanced productivity has made it mandatory for the organizations to carefully choose the appropriate software after comprehensive needs assessment. Softwares simply their tasks and saves a lot of precious time which can be utilized in managing other important issues. Libraries also need softwares if they want to create a parallel digital library with features which we may not find in a traditional library. There are several open source softwares available to create a digital library. For this, firstly the library professionals should be aware of the advantages of open source software and should involve in their development. They should have basic knowledge about the selection, installation and maintenance. Open source software requires a greater degree of computing responsibility than commercial software. Digitization involves huge money to create and maintain and the OSS appears to be a means to reduce it. Among these, DSpace and Greenstone are becoming more popular in India and abroad. This paper deals with the comparison of these two popular OSS from various points of view. The comparative table may help the professionals who are planning to create a digital library.
