Buried Pipe Life Prediction in Sewage Type Environments

In this study, we develop a method of life prediction of buried pipe using the concepts of a characteristic damage state and damage accumulation. A stress analysis corresponding to the different types of load during service with environmental effects, a moisture diffusion model, and a lifetime prediction analysis combining the above models has been constructed. The model uses an elasticity solution for axial-symmetric loading in the case of pressurized pipe, and an approximate non-linear solution for transverse loading due to soil pressure in the case of buried pipe. The axial-symmetric stress analysis has been constructed taking into account the moisture content and the temperature of each ply of the laminate. The moisture diffusion model takes into account the geometry of the laminate, the different diffusivity coefficients in each ply, and also the geometric changes due to ply failure. The failure mode and material behavior of the pipe has been investigated and identified according to Owens Corning data. Thus, the code that has been developed allows one to predict the time to failure of Owens Corning industrial pipes under any time-dependent profile of environmental and loading conditions. / Master of Science

Fatigue Life Assessment of 30CrNiMo8HH Steel Under Variable Amplitude Loading

The actual service loading histories of most engineering components are characterized by variable amplitudes and are sometimes rather complicated. The goal of this study was to estimate the fatigue life of nickel-chromium-molybdenum 30CrNiMo8HH steel alloy under axial and pure torsion variable amplitude loading (VAL) conditions. The investigation was directed at two primary factors that are believed to have an influence on fatigue life under such loading conditions: load sequence and mean stress. The experimental work for this research included two-step loading, non-zero mean strain loading, and VAL tests, the results of which were added to previously determined fully reversed strain-controlled fatigue data. The effect of load sequence on fatigue life was examined through the application of the commonly used linear damage accumulation rule along with the Manson and Marco–Starkey damage accumulation methods, the latter of which takes load sequence into account. Based on the two-step experimental results, both the Manson and Marco–Starkey methods were modified in order to eliminate the empirically determined constants normally required for these two methods. The effect of mean stress on fatigue life was investigated with the use of three life prediction models: Smith–Watson–Topper (SWT), Fatemi–Socie (FS), and Jahed–Varvani (JV). The cycles from the VAL histories were counted using a rainflow counting procedure that maintains the applied strain sequence, and a novel method was developed for the estimation of the total energy density required for the JV model. For two-step loading and for all three fatigue models employed, the modified damage accumulation methods provided superior fatigue life predictions. However, regardless of the damage accumulation method applied, the most satisfactory fatigue life correlation for VAL was obtained using the energy-based JV model.

The objectives of this work is residual lifetime of heaters in petrochemical industry. There is no comprehensive publication about this theme. This paper lists and describes the most of main phenomena that has to be taken into account in the process of determination of residual lifetime. This paper focuses on creep damage of a real heater based on deformation measurement. It describes some heater failures that could cause unplanned operation interruption however, appropriate intervention made possible safe heater operation until planned heater shutdown. No compact method is given how to determine heater residual lifetime, but a direction is given how a complex method of residual lifetime assessment of refinery heaters could be created.

Characterization and Lifetime Performance Modeling of Acrylic Foam Tape for Structural Glazing Applications

This thesis presents the results of testing and modeling conducted to characterize the performance of 3M™ VHB™ structural glazing tape in both shear and tension. Creep rupture testing results provided the failure time at a given static load and temperature, and ramp-to-fail testing results provided the ultimate load resistance at a given rate of strain and temperature. Parallel testing was conducted on three structural silicone sealants to compare performance. Using the time temperature superposition principle, master curves of VHB tape storage and loss moduli in shear and tension were developed with data from a dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). The thermal shift factors obtained from these constitutive tests were successfully applied to the creep rupture and ramp-to-fail data collected at 23°C, 40°C, and 60°C (73°F, 104°F, and 140°F), resulting in master curves of ramp-to-fail strength and creep rupture durability in shear and tension. A simple linear damage accumulation model was then proposed to examine the accumulation of wind damage if VHB tape is used to attach curtain wall glazing panels to building facades. The purpose of the model was to investigate the magnitude of damage resulting from the accumulation of sustained wind speeds that are less than the peak design wind speed. The model used the equation derived from tensile creep rupture testing, extrapolated into the range of stresses that would typically be generated by wind loading. This equation was applied to each individual entry in the data files of several real wind speed histories, and the fractions of life used at each entry were combined into a total percentage of life used. Although the model did not provide evidence that the established design procedure is unsafe, it suggested that the accumulation of damage from wind speeds below the peak wind speed could cause a VHB tape mode of failure that merits examination along with the more traditional peak wind speed design procedure currently recommended by the vendor. / Master of Science

Measuring Material Properties of Proton Exchange Membranes using Pressure Loaded Blister Testing and Digital Image Correlation

The strength and durability of proton exchange membranes for use in fuel cells has received much attention recently due to the increased push for sustainable alternatives to the internal combustion engine. To be viable, these alternatives must have comparable lifetimes and power outputs to the internal combustion engines they replace. Chemical degradation was once viewed as the most common culprit of early fuel cell failure, but as membranes and catalysts improved, mechanical failure became an important factor. As a result, fundamental research on the mechanically-induced failure mechanisms of fuel cell membranes, coupled with development and processing of less expensive membranes, has become an important topic. The use of the blister test geometry, along with digital image correlation of the deformed shape, creates a self-contained analysis tool useful for measuring the biaxial strength of membranes. In this work, blister tests are used to measure biaxial stress and strain for fuel cell membranes subjected to ramped pressure loading to form stress-strain curves that indicate the onset of yielding under biaxial stress conditions. Stress-life curves are developed experimentally for Gore-Selec? series 57 members using data collected under constant pressure conditions. These results are used to predict blister failure under ramped and fatigue loadings. A newly implemented hydrocarbon membrane system is evaluated with constant-pressure-to-leak blister testing. Improved strength following an isothermal hold at 100°C (pretreatment) is shown to occur. Ramped pressure testing indicates that the material after the pretreatment is stiffer and has a higher yield stress than the material before treatment. Morphological and constitutive characterization indicated differences in the materials that are consistent with the improved performance. / Master of Science

Parameterized Seismic Reliability Assessment and Life-Cycle Analysis of Aging Highway Bridges

The highway bridge infrastructure system within the United States is rapidly deteriorating and a significant percentage of these bridges are approaching the end of their useful service life. Deterioration mechanisms affect the load resisting capacity of critical structural components and render aging highway bridges more vulnerable to earthquakes compared to pristine structures. While past literature has traditionally neglected the simultaneous consideration of seismic and aging threats to highway bridges, a joint fragility assessment framework is needed to evaluate the impact of deterioration mechanisms on bridge vulnerability during earthquakes. This research aims to offer an efficient methodology for accurate estimation of the seismic fragility of aging highway bridges. In addition to aging, which is a predominant threat that affects lifetime seismic reliability, other stressors such as repeated seismic events or simultaneous presence of truck traffic are also incorporated in the seismic fragility analysis. The impact of deterioration mechanisms on bridge component responses are assessed for a range of exposure conditions following the nonlinear dynamic analysis of three-dimensional high-fidelity finite element aging bridge models. Subsequently, time-dependent fragility curves are developed at the bridge component and system level to assess the probability of structural damage given the earthquake intensity. In addition to highlighting the importance of accounting for deterioration mechanisms, these time-evolving fragility curves are used within an improved seismic loss estimation methodology to aid in efficient channeling of monetary resources for structural retrofit or seismic upgrade. Further, statistical learning methods are employed to derive flexible parameterized fragility models conditioned on earthquake hazard intensity, bridge design parameters, and deterioration affected structural parameters to provide significant improvements over traditional fragility models and aid in efficient estimation of aging bridge vulnerabilities. In order to facilitate bridge management decision making, a methodology is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed multi-dimensional fragility models to estimate the in-situ aging bridge reliabilities with field-measurement data across a transportation network. Finally, this research proposes frameworks to offer guidance to risk analysts regarding the importance of accounting for supplementary threats stemming from multiple seismic shocks along the service life of the bridge structures and the presence of truck traffic atop the bridge deck during earthquake events.
