Variable Damping Control of a Robotic Arm to Improve Trade-off Between Performance and Stability

abstract: Admittance control with fixed damping has been a successful control strategy in previous human-robotic interaction research. This research implements a variable damping admittance controller in a 7-DOF robotic arm coupled with a human subject’s arm at the end effector to study the trade-off of agility and stability and aims to produce a control scheme which displays both fast rise time and stability. The variable damping controller uses a measure of intent of movement to vary damping to aid the user’s movement to a target. The range of damping values is bounded by incorporating knowledge of a human arm to ensure the stability of the coupled human-robot system. Human subjects completed experiments with fixed positive, fixed negative, and variable damping controllers to evaluate the variable damping controller’s ability to increase agility and stability. Comparisons of the two fixed damping controllers showed as fixed damping increased, the coupled human-robot system reacted with less overshoot at the expense of rise time, which is used as a measure of agility. The inverse was also true; as damping became increasingly negative, the overshoot and stability of the system was compromised, while the rise time became faster. Analysis of the variable damping controller demonstrated humans could extract the benefits of the variable damping controller in its ability to increase agility in comparison to a positive damping controller and increase stability in comparison to a negative damping controller. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Mechanical Engineering 2019

Aspects of Wide-Area Damping Control Design using Dominant Path Synchrophasor Signals

The presence of inter-area oscillations has long affected stability constraints, and therefore, limited the power transfer capacity of interconnected power systems. Adequate damping of these inter-area oscillations is, thus, necessary to secure system operation and ensure system reliability while increasing power transfers. Power system stabilizers (PSS) are the most common devices used to enhance the damping of such oscillations. Many studies have demonstrated that PSSs using remote signals may perform better than using local signals. The advent of phasor measurement units (PMU) makes remote or wide-area signals become available, which enables various important applications. Of particular interest is wide-area damping control (WADC), which aims to utilize remote or wide-area measurements to damp the inter-area oscillations. However, two main challenges in WADC design are (1) feedback controller input signal selection (which PMU signal is best to use?), and (2) latency (which is inherent in the transmission of the measurements) considerations. In response to the first challenge, this thesis proposes a concept called dominant inter-area oscillation path, which serves to pinpoint a set of candidate signals that can be used as the feedback controller inputs by locating the interconnected corridors where the inter-area modal contents are the most observable. Derivation, identification, and use of the dominant inter-area oscillation paths are demonstrated throughout the thesis. Extensive analysis on the relationships between the proposed set of signals and system properties regarding stability and robustness is presented. To tackle the second challenge, the impacts of time delays on the system performance when using the dominant path signals are investigated. To date, several studies have proposed different control design methods using various oscillation dampers to design WADC. Nevertheless, neither a systematic method nor a concept that encompasses fundamental knowledge on power system dynamics has yet been offered. The objective of this thesis is, thus, to propose an analytical framework based on the dominant path concept which is built upon fundamental principles for feedback controller input signal selection in WADC. With this framework, a proper and systematic approach is developed. The proposed method allows to select appropriate signals and use them to effectively mitigate the inter-area oscillations that constrain power transfer capacity and affect system stability. / <p>QC 20150414</p>

Analysis and Control Aspects of a PMSynRel Drive in a Hybrid Electric Vehicle Application

This thesis deals withmodeling and control of an electric drive equipped with a permanentmagnet assisted synchronous reluctance (PMSynRel) machine for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle application. In the first part of the thesis, a special use of the PMSynRel machine in consideration, known as an integrated charger concept, is investigated. The integrated charger feature allows using the PMSynRel machine as a part of the vehicle’s on-board charging system when charging the battery from the grid. A finite-element based analysis is performed providing important insights into the machine operation during the charging process. Dynamic models are developed that facilitate the controller development and the estimation of the efficiency during charging. In the second part of the thesis, position sensorless control of the PMSynRel drive when applied in an automotive application is considered and analyzed thoroughly. First, a fundamental-excitation based rotor-position estimation technique is investigated. The study shows that the impact of current dynamics on the resulting torque dynamics has to be considered in some very demanding applications. Second, focus is put on signalinjection based sensorless control methods. Impacts of nonlinearities, such as magnetic saturation, cross-saturation and inductance spatial harmonics, on sensorless control performance are investigated and methods to improve the sensorless control quality are summarized and presented. An approach to determine the feasible region for operating sensorless at low-speeds without directly measuring the differential inductances is proposed. For the PMSynRel drive in consideration, the achievable maximum torque is limited when operating sensorless following the maximum-torque-per-ampere (MTPA) current reference trajectory at low-speeds. An optimization approach is therefore proposed which extends the output torque when operating sensorless while still maintaining a relatively high efficiency. To initialize the sensorless control correctly from standstill, the impact of the saturated magnetic bridges in the rotor is also investigated. Finally, torsional drive-train oscillations and active damping schemes are considered. An off-vehicle setup for implementing and evaluating different active damping schemes is proposed. Of particular interest for sensorless operation in automotive applications, the impact of slow speed estimation on the possibility to achieve good active damping control is investigated and a design approach that allows the implementation of an active damping scheme using estimated speed is suggested. / <p>QC 20140114</p>

Concepts for Power System Small Signal Stability Analysis and Feedback Control Design Considering Synchrophasor Measurements

In the Nordic power network, the existence of poorly damped low-frequency inter-area oscillations (LFIOs) has long affected stability constraints, and thereby, limited power transfer capacity. Adequate damping of inter-area modes is, thus, necessary to secure system operation and ensure system reliability while increasing power transfers. Power system stabilizers (PSS) is a prevalent means to enhance the damping of such modes. With the advent of phasor measurement units (PMUs), it is expected that wide-area damping control (WADC), that is, PSS control using wide-area measurements obtained from PMUs, would effectively improve damping performance in the Nordic grid, as well as other synchronous interconnected systems. Numerous research has investigated one ``branch'' of the problem, that is, PSS design using various control schemes. Before addressing the issue of controller design, it is important to focus on developing proper understanding of the ``root'' of the problem: system-wide oscillations, their nature, behavior and consequences. This understanding must provide new insight on the use of PMUs for feedback control of LFIOs. The aim of this thesis is, therefore, to lay important concepts necessary for the study of power system small signal stability analysis that considers the availability of synchrophasors as a solid foundation for further development and implementation of ideas and related applications. Particularly in this study, the focus is on the application addressed damping controller design and implementation. After a literature review on the important elements for wide-area damping control (WADC), the thesis continues with classical small signal stability analysis of an equivalent Nordic model; namely, the KTH-NORDIC32 which is used as a test system throughout the thesis. The system's inter-area oscillations are identified and a sensitivity analysis of the network variables directly measured by synchrophasors is evaluated. The concept of network modeshapes, which is used to relate the dynamical behavior of power systems to the features of inter-area modes, is elaborated. Furthermore, this network modeshape concept is used to determine dominant inter-area oscillation paths, the passageways containing the highest content of the inter-area oscillations. The dominant inter-area paths are illustrated with the test system. The degree of persistence of dominant paths in the study system is determined through contingency studies. The properties of the dominant paths are used to construct feedback signals as input to the PSS. Finally, to exemplify the use of the dominant inter-area path concept for damping control, the constructed feedback signals are implemented in a PSS modulating the AVR error signal of a generator on an equivalent two-area model, and compared with that of conventional speed signals.

Wide Area Analysis and Application in Power System

Frequency monitoring network (FNET) is an Internet based GPS synchronized wide-area frequency monitoring network deployed at distribution level. At first part of this thesis, FNET structure and characteristics are introduced. After analysis and smoothing FDR signals, the algorithm of event trigger is present with Visual C++ DLL programming. Estimation of disturbance location method is discussed based on the time delay of arriving (TDOA) in the second part of this work. In this section, author shows the multiply method to calculate event time, which is important when deal with pre-disturbance frequency in TDOA part. Two event kinds are classified by the change of frequency and the linear relationship between change of frequency and imbalance of generation and load power is presented. Prove that Time Delay of Arrival (TDOA) is a good algorithm for estimation event location proved by real cases. At last, the interface of DLL module and the key word to import and export DLL variables and function is described. At last, PSS compensation optimization with a set of nonlinear differential algebraic equations (DAE) is introduced in detail. With combining the bifurcation theory of nonlinear system and the optimization theory, the optimal control of small-signal stability of power electric systems are solved. From the perspective of stability margin, global coordination of controller parameters is studied to ensure the stable operation of power grids. The main contents of this thesis include: ï¼ 1ï¼ Models of power systems and test power electric systems. Tht5e dynamic and static models of the elements of power systems, such as generatorbbs, AVRs, PSSs, loads and FACTS controllers are presented. Method of power system linearization modeling is introduced. Three test power systems, WSCC 9-bus system, 2-area system, New England 39-bus system, are used in thesis. ï¼ 2ï¼ Multi-objective optimizations based on bifurcation theory. The optimization models, damping control-Hopf bifurcation control, voltage control-damping control, are presented. Pareto combined with evolutionary strategy (ES) are used to solve multi-objective optimizations. Based on traditional PSS parameters optimizations, it can be formulated as a multi-objective problem, in which, two objectives should be taken into account. Supervisory control scheme for FACTS and HVDC based damping of inter-area power oscillations in hybrid AC-DC power systems

Modern interconnected power systems are becoming highly complex and sophisticated, while increasing energy penetrations through congested inter-tie lines causing the operating point approaching stability margins. This as a result, exposes the overall system to potential low frequency power oscillation phenomena following disturbances. This in turn can lead to cascading events and blackouts. Recent approaches to counteract this phenomenon are based on utilization of wide area monitoring systems (WAMS) and power electronics based devices, such as flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) and HVDC links for advanced power oscillation damping provision. The rise of hybrid AC-DC power systems is therefore sought as a viable solution in overcoming this challenge and securing wide-area stability. If multiple FACTS devices and HVDC links are integrated in a scheme with no supervising control actions considered amongst them, the overall system response might not be optimal. Each device might attempt to individually damp power oscillations ignoring the control status of the rest. This introduces an increasing chance of destabilizing interactions taking place between them, leading to under-utilized performance, increased costs and system wide-area stability deterioration. This research investigates the development of a novel supervisory control scheme that optimally coordinates a parallel operation of multiple FACTS devices and an HVDC link distributed across a power system. The control system is based on Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) modern optimal control theory. The proposed new control scheme provides coordinating control signals to WAMS based FACTS devices and HVDC link, to optimally and coherently counteract inter-area modes of low frequency power oscillations inherent in the system. The thesis makes a thorough review of the existing and well-established improved stability practises a power system benefits from through the implementation of a single FACTS device or HVDC link, and compares the case –and hence raises the issue–when all active components are integrated simultaneously and uncoordinatedly. System identification approaches are also in the core of this research, serving as means of reaching a linear state space model representative of the non-linear power system, which is a pre-requisite for LQG control design methodology.

Contribution à l'utilisation des polymères à mémoire de forme pour les structures à amortissement contrôlé / Contribution to using shape memory polymers for the control of structural damping

Ces travaux de thèse proposent utiliser les polymères à mémoire de forme comme moyen de contrôle desvibrations des structures. Outre hystérésis de mémoire qui est classiquement mis en avant, ces matériauxpossèdent des propriétés amortissantes intrinsèques qui sont d'autant plus intéressantes lorsque l’effetmémoire de forme est important. Dans un premier temps une caractérisation des propriétés mécaniques dutBA/PEGDMA, polymère à mémoire de forme de l'étude, est effectuée par analyse dynamique mécanique.Un modèle rhéologique basé sur lʹéquivalence temps-température, le 2S2P1D, est utilisé pour rendre comptedu comportement viscoélastique du polymère. Dans un deuxième temps, une campagne expérimentale estmenée, sur une large bande de fréquences et de températures, grâce à divers moyens expérimentaux(statiques, modaux, nano-indentations, ultrasons, dynamiques hautes fréquences, microscopie acoustique)afin de définir le domaine de validité, fréquentiel et thermique, du modèle rhéologique. Dans un troisièmetemps, le polymère à mémoire de forme est intégré à une structure composite de type sandwich pour mettreen évidence le pouvoir amortissant impressionnant du matériau. Enfin, une méthodologie de contrôle delʹamortissement par la température est proposée. En effet, la dissipation d’énergie dans le sandwich sʹavèrecontrôlable, la température permettant d’ajuster la rigidité et le facteur de perte du tBA/PEGDMA pour unamortissement optimal sur une large bande de fréquences. / This work proposes to use shape memory polymers to control structural vibrations. These materials exhibit amemory hysteresis which is practically associated with intrinsic damping properties which are very highwhen the memory effect is strong. First, a thermomechanical characterization of the shape memory polymerof interest (tBA/PEGDMA) is performed by dynamic mechanical analysis. A rheological model based on timetemperaturesuperposition is used to represent the viscoelastic behavior of the polymer. Secondly, anexperimental campaign is performed over a wide frequency and temperature range, through variousexperimental techniques (static, modal, nanoindentation, ultrasounds, high frequency dynamic analysis,acoustic microscopy) to define the area of validity, in frequency and temperature, of the rheological model.Third, the shape memory polymer is integrated into a composite sandwich structure to highlight the awesomedamping capabilities of the material. Finally, a damping tuning methodology by temperature control isproposed. Indeed, the power dissipation in the sandwich is related to physical properties of the tBA/PEGDMA core which are temperature-controlled to optimize the damping over a given frequency range.
