Children's causal attributions for performance in creative dance and folk dance

Cholod, Kirsten L. (Kirsten Lynn) January 1994 (has links)
This study investigated children's attributions for their performance in creative dance and folk dance. Eighty-six grade 5 and 6 children from a suburban elementary school participated in five creative dance and five folk dance lessons as part of their regular physical education program. After participation in each dance type, children completed a questionnaire which assessed their perceived success and attributions for their performance. After rating their perceived success in creative/folk dance, children gave an open-ended attributional statement for their performance, and then scored their statement along the four causal dimensions (personal control, locus of causality, stability, external control) (Weiss, McAuley, Ebbeck, & Wiese, 1990). Thirteen dance lessons were videotaped and the teacher's behavior was analysed. Results showed that children in both creative and folk dance tended to: (a) perceive their performance as successful, and (b) make functional attributions by attributing their performance to factors which they perceived as being personally controllable, internal, and not under the control of other people. Results indicated no significant effects of dance type or gender for perceived success and the four causal dimensions. However, two significant effects were found for grade, as the grade 5's perceived their performance to be more successful than the grade 6's, and also attributed their performance to factors that were less under the control of other people. Results from children's open-ended attributional statements and the observational recordings of the teacher's behavior supported the notion that creative dance and folk dance are two distinct forms of dance. The overall results appear to have positive implications with respect to the influence of creative dance and folk dance on the motivation of children. The findings therefore support the inclusion of dance in elementary physical education programs.

Descriptive study of aerobic dance-exercise instructional skills

Castaneda, Carmelita (Rosie) Patrice 12 January 2010 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe the instructional skills demonstrated by 29 aerobic dance-exercise instructors as identified through the Aerobic Dance Observation System (ADOS). A secondary purpose was to describe the instructional skills across demographic and contextual variables such as years of teaching experience, certification, age, gender, facility, and equipment. Twenty-nine aerobic dance-exercise instructors (Male = 5; Female = 24) were observed in a variety of facilities: recreational programs, educational institutions, health clubs and aerobic dance-exercise studios. Each facility had different features and equipment such as floor type (hardwood, concrete or padded), portable or built-in sound system, mirrors and microphones. The exercise classes consisted of low-impact, high-impact, or step classes that varied from 50 to 90 minutes in length. Class sizes ranged from 4 to 150 individuals from all levels of fitness. Data were collected using three different methods: demographic questionnaire, on-site data analysis (Tech Checks and the physical location of the instructor) and videotaped analysis (instructional cues, nonverbal cues, general/specific feedback and choreographed movement patterns). Through descriptive statistical analysis, a profile of the instructional skills used in aerobic dance-exercise teaching environment was compiled. The findings from this study indicate that overall the aerobic dance exercise instructors demonstrated more similarities than differences in their patterns of teaching across demographic and contextual variables. The instructional profile describes instructors leading from the front of the room providing limited instructional information. / Master of Science

This current research aims at presenting this dance author’s work contributions in the formation of students in the above stated course, from the PPC orientations. It is an exploratory qualitative research, with participative observation and discourse analysis. Thinking the ballet teaching on the somatic bases and under a contemporary perspective is essential in order to meet the pedagogical guidelines according to the Course Pedagogical Project – PPC, of the Federal University of Alagoas Dance Graduation Degree. By developing a class methodology that reconfigures some concepts stated by the ballet tradition, Flávio Sampaio becomes the main reference for the study of such technique in the mentioned course. We have been supported by Boaventura de Souza Santos’s works, Epistemologies from the South (2010), which defends a knowledge construction less colonized by the Global North and new epistemologies from the Global South through an ecological knowledge. Sampaio’s work is here understood as the basis for a ‘Southern’ ballet and that must be recognized by the Academy. We also state that the way of teaching ballet may be defined as contemporary according to Agamben’s thoughts (2009). The students’ testimonials bring up body discourses that experienced the practice and thus endorsing the construction of a possible reconfiguration of the ballet teaching at the University.
