Negative space of things : a practice-based research approach to understand the role of objects in the Internet of Things

Shingleton, Duncan James January 2018 (has links)
This is a practice-based research thesis situated in the research context of the 'Internet of Things', and critiques contemporary theoretical discourse related to the 21st century turn of connecting everyday objects to the World Wide Web. In the last decade we have seen the 'Internet of Things' articulated predominately through three commercial design fictions, each a response to the shift towards pervasive", "ubiquitous" (Weiser 1991), or "context-ware" (Schilit, 1994) computing; where we inhabit spaces with objects capable of sensing, recording and relaying data about themselves and their environments. Through reflecting upon these existing design fictions, through a new combination of theories and practice-based research that embodies them, this thesis proposes a recovery to understanding the role of objects in the 'Internet of Things', which this author believes has been lost since its conception in the mid 2000s. In 2000, HP Labs presented Cooltown, which addressed what HP identified as the 'convergence of Web technology, wireless networks, and portable client devices provides'. Cooltown's primary discourse was to provide 'new design opportunities for computer/communications systems, through an infrastructure to support "web presence" for people, places and things.' (Anders 1998; Barton & Kindberg 2002). IBM's Smarter Planet followed this in 2008 and shifted importance from the act of connecting objects to understanding the value of data as it flows between these objects in a network (Castells 1996; Sterling 2005; Latour 2005). Finally, Cisco presented The Internet of Everything in 2012 and moved the argument on one stage further, identifying that the importance of connected objects lies in the sum of their communication across silos of networks, where data can provide potential insight from which you can improve services (Bleecker 2006). Despite these design and theoretical fictions, the affordances of the Internet of Things first proposed in the mid 2000s has regressed from data to product, driven largely by unchanged discourse argued by those designers at its conception and also the enticement of being the next Google acquisition; instead of pigeons reporting on the environmental conditions of a city (Da Costa 2006), we have thermostats controllable from your smartphone (www.scottishpower.co.uk/connect). Therefore the aim of this thesis is to re-examine the initial potential of the Internet of Things, which is tested through a series of design interventions as research for art and design, (produced as part of my EPSRC funded doctoral studies on the Tales of Things and Electronic Memory research project and also whilst employed as a research assistant on two EPSRC funded research programmes of work Sixth Sense Transport, and The Connected High Street), to understand how we use data to allow an alternative discourse to emerge in order to recover the role of a networked object, rather than producing prototypical systems.

Salperwyck, Christophe 30 November 2012 (has links)
Statistical learning provides numerous algorithms to build predictive models on past observations. These techniques proved their ability to deal with large scale realistic problems. However, new domains generate more and more data which are only visible once and need to be processes sequentially. These volatile data, known as data streams, come from telecommunication network management, social network, web mining. The challenge is to build new algorithms able to learn under these constraints. We proposed to build new summaries for supervised classification. Our summaries are based on two levels. The first level is an online incremental summary which uses low processing and address the precision/memory tradeoff. The second level uses the first layer summary to build the final sumamry with an effcient offline method. Building these sumamries is a pre-processing stage to develop new classifiers for data streams. We propose new versions for the naive-Bayes and decision trees classifiers using our summaries. As data streams might contain concept drifts, we also propose a new technique to detect these drifts and update classifiers accordingly.

TELEMETRY AND COMMAND FRAME ROUTING IN A MULTI-MISSION ENVIRONMENT

Bester, Manfred, Stroozas, Brett 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2007 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Third Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 22-25, 2007 / Riviera Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / In a modern ground control network for space communications, secure peer-to-peer TCP/IP network socket connections are typically used to transfer real-time telemetry and command frames between satellite operations centers and remote ground stations. Reliable and timely reconfiguration of data paths for upcoming pass supports becomes rather complex when many spacecraft and ground stations are involved. This paper describes a routing software application that was developed to facilitate switching of telemetry and command data paths between multiple ground stations and spacecraft command and control systems, and to forward telemetry streams to multiple client applications in parallel. Fully automated configuration and monitoring of the data flows is accomplished via a remote control interface that is tied into a pass scheduling system. The software is part of the SatTrack Suite and currently supports multi-mission flight operations, including those of the recently launched THEMIS constellation mission at Space Sciences Laboratory, University of California at Berkeley.

Utilização de filtros em programa de imagem digital / Use of filters in mobile photo-sharing application and services

Azevedo, Telma Luiza de 26 April 2017 (has links)
The image concentrates the ideological information that encompasses complex structures that permeate the lives of millions of users and constitute and build society in our time. From a look at the current view of the photographic practices in society, the dissertation deals with the use of filters, which consist of tools that the photographer can use to apply various effects to his images, such as highlighting colors, changing contrasts of the scene, modify focus, apply graphic effects, absorb part of the light that reaches the lens, that is, superimpose layers of information on them, in the production of shared photographs in social networks. Filters also refer to the act of classifying and selecting networked data flows for public or private information from users around the globe interfering with the activities of millions of individuals. Thus the promotion of scientific knowledge of a sphere of shared, creative and experimental photographic language popularized by technology in our day is essential to highlight the scope of the phenomenon and to promote or provoke reflection of the financial determinants that permeate habitual behaviors, and so transforming the established standards and not just reproduce them.

MCMC estimation of panel gravity models in the presence of network dependence

LeSage, James P., Fischer, Manfred M. 02 October 2018 (has links) (PDF)
Past focus in the panel gravity literature has been on multidimensional fixed effects specifications in an effort to accommodate heterogeneity. After introducing fixed effects for each origin- destination dyad and time-period speciffic effects, we find evidence of cross-sectional dependence in flows. We propose a simultaneous dependence gravity model that allows for network dependence in flows, along with computationally efficient MCMC estimation methods that produce a Monte Carlo integration estimate of log-marginal likelihood useful for model comparison. Application of the model to a panel of trade flows points to network spillover effects, suggesting the presence of network dependence and biased estimates from conventional trade flow specifications. / Series: Working Papers in Regional Science

Výkon pracovníků a motivace v organizaci (a návrh IT pro jejich podporu) / Staff performance and motivation in the organization (and design IT to support them)

Biľ, Tomáš January 2010 (has links)
Paper summarizes the importance of motivation and performance of employees in the organization. The primary goal of this paper is to propose solutions to increase motivation and thus performance. Meet this target would require the implementation of many activities, from finding present, the IS architecture, through detailed analysis of individual systems, which affect workers. Important too was the definition of where all the motivation and performance in man takes and how it can be measured. In the practical part I have done, according to gained experience, using the LMI survey questionnaire to identify weak areas of performance motivation. These results, I finally offered advice and firstly from a psychological perspective, and secondly in terms of IT and its main information system, the workers who come into contact every day and therefore has a huge impact on them. Contribution of the author of this thesis was to identify and increase motivation, through analysis and recommendations specified by the selected methodologies.

Control of critical data flows : Automated monitoring of insurance data

Karlsson, Christoffer January 2016 (has links)
EU insurance companies work on implementing the Solvency II directive, which calls for stronger focus on data quality and information controls. Information controls are procedures that can validate data at rest and data in motion to detect errors and anomalies. In this master thesis a case study was carried out at AMF, a Swedish pension insurance company, to identify and investigate their critical data flows and the controls performed in the respective flows. A purpose of this project is to help AMF ensure data quality requirements from the Financial Supervisory Authority that they have to fulfill. The thesis was conducted at AMF between September and December 2015, and included tasks such as carrying out interviews, Enterprise Architecture modeling, analysis, prototyping, product evaluation and calculation of a business case.  A gap analysis was carried out to analyze the needs for change regarding existing information controls at AMF, where different states of the company are documented and analyzed. The current state corresponds to the present situation at the company including attributes to be improved while the future state outlines the target condition that the company wants to achieve. A gap between the current state and future state is identified and elements that make up the gap are presented in the gap description. Lastly, possible remedies for bridging the gap between the current and future state are presented.  Furthermore, a prototype of an automated control tool from a company called Infogix has been implemented and analyzed regarding usability, governance and cost.  A benefits evaluation was carried out on the information control tool to see whether an investment would be beneficial for AMF. The benefit evaluation was carried out using the PENG method, a Swedish model developed by three senior consultants that has been specially adjusted for evaluation of IT investments. The evaluation showed that such an investment would become beneficial during the second year after investment.
