When a Librarian's Not There to Ask: Creating an Information Resource Advisory Tool

Gabridge, Tracy, Hennig, Nicole, Lubas, Rebecca, Wenzel, Sarah 04 1900 (has links)
It is 2am. A professor wakes up with a new direction for her research; she must immediately learn about bioethics. In a dorm a student is finally ready to begin a paper on Cuba. Where do they turn? The library web site presents them with a bewildering array of resources and no librarian on hand to serve as intermediary. How can librarians facilitate research in their absence? What interfaces can be designed to educate users in their search? What metadata is needed to enable accurate retrieval? What is the librarian’s role in the increasingly indirectly-mediated information-seeking environment? Can the reference interview be effectively translated into a search interface? This paper describes a step towards resolving these issues by creating an on-line tool to assist users in selecting the database(s) most germane to their research needs.

Λάιος, Νικόλαος 28 September 2010 (has links)
This project have been carried out in the framework of the Postgraduate studies of "Applied and Environmental Geology" of the Geology Department of the University of Patras. Firstly there is an overview of the landslides in the greater Greek Region, the landslide causes, the consequences of this major problem and the meaning of the remedial measures that the state must take in order to avoid those consequences, as well. Also there is an attempt of classification of landslides in relation with the type of the movement and the geological data at the unstable areas, considering the prevailing circumstances at the two major geological parts of our country (East and West). After that, there is a distinctly inspect of the geological data in the project area. Secondly there is an attempt of creation a landslide Database which is filled of clues from landslides that they took place at the areas that were harmed by the 2007 blazes at the Ilias Prefecture. The clues have been gathered from 352 landslides that they happened in the period 2007-2009. Those clues have been registered at the landslide Database which was designed with the Microsoft Access software at the Technical Geology Laboratory at the University of Patras. Finally the clues have been statistical processed and analyzed in order to extract some conclusions for the evaluation of the landslides allocation according to geological data and the influence of the blazes. A particular importance reference is done for the remedial measures that they were chosen by the low cost of construction and the maximum effectiveness.

A configuration approach for selecting a data warehouse architecture

Weir, Robert January 2008 (has links)
Living in the Information Age, organisations must be able to exploit their data alongside the traditional economic resources of man, machine and money. Accordingly, organisations implement data warehouses to organise and consolidate their data, which creates a decision support system that is “subject oriented”, “time variant”, “integrated” and “non-volatile”. However, the organisation's ability to successfully exploit their data is determined by the degree of strategic alignment. As such, this study poses the question: how can a data warehouse be successfully and demonstrably aligned to an organisation's strategic objectives? This thesis demonstrates that strategic alignment can be achieved by following a new "top down" data warehouse implementation framework, the Configuration Approach, which is based upon determining an organisation's target configuration. This was achieved by employing Miles and Snow's Ideal Types to formulate a questionnaire that reveals an organisation's target configuration in terms of its approach to the Entrepreneurial, Administration and Information Systems challenges. Crucially, this thesis also provides the means to choose a data warehouse architecture that is wholly based on the organisation's target configuration. The Configuration Approach was evaluated using a single case study undergoing a period of strategic transformation where the implementation of a data warehouse was key to its strategic ambitions. The case study illustrated how it is possible to articulate an organisation's strategic configuration, which becomes the key driver for building a warehouse that demonstrably supports the resolution of its Entrepreneurial and Administration challenges. Significantly, the case study also provides a unique opportunity to demonstrate how the target configuration helps organisations to make the right choice of data warehouse architecture to satisfy the Information Systems challenge. In this case, the Configuration Approach provides a basis for challenging the architectural choices made by a consultancy on behalf of the participating organisation. Accordingly, it can be asserted that data warehouses are strategic investments, if implemented using the Configuration Approach.

Evolution Management in NoSQL Document Databases / Evolution Management in NoSQL Document Databases

Vavrek, Michal January 2018 (has links)
NoSQL databases are widely used for many applications as a technology for data storage, and their usage and popularity rises. The first aim of the thesis is to research the existing approaches and technologies for schema evolution in NoSQL databases. Next, we introduce an approach for schema evolution in multi-model databases with a unified interface for the most common data models. The proposed approach is easy to use and covers the common migration scenarios. We have also implemented a prototype, optimized its read/write operations, and demonstrated its properties on real-world data. 1

In recent years, cloud computing has attracted attention from industry and academic world, becoming increasingly common to find cases of cloud adoption by companies and research institutions in the literature. Since the majority of cloud applications are data-driven, database management systems powering these applications are critical components in the application stack. Many novel database systems have emerged to fulfill new requirements of high-scalable cloud applications. Those systems have remarkable differences when compared to traditional relational databases. Moreover, since elasticity is a key feature in cloud computing and it is a differential of this computing paradigm, novel database systems must also provide elasticity. Altogether with the emergence of these new systems, the need of evaluating them comes up. Traditional benchmark tools for database systems are not sufficient to analyze some specificities of these systems in a cloud. Thus, new benchmark tools are required to properly evaluate such cloud systems and also to measure how elastic they are. Before actually benchmarking and measuring elasticity of cloud database systems, it becomes necessary to define a model with elasticity metrics that makes sense both for consumers and providers. In this work we present BenchXtend, a tool, that extends Yahoo! Cloud Serving Benchmark (YCSB), to benchmark cloud database systems and to measure elasticity of such systems. As part of this work, we propose a model with metrics from consumer and provider perspectives to measure elasticity. Finally, we evaluated our solution by performing experiments and we verified that our tool could properly vary the load during execution, as expected, and that our elasticity model could capture the elasticity differences between the studied scenarios.

The evolutionary process of the Internet has expanded the membership to human virtual environment, which led the scientific community to make efforts to better understand the intrinsic qualities of this interaction. In the context of research involving the theme of virtual entertainment, little attention has been addressing the quality of information on specific vehicles, particularly in relation to senior public, arousing the attention of this study. Therefore, this qualitative study aimed to produce a database, through links to information about the cultural content of leisure in this case for the elderly, and the development and implementation of the Usability Evaluation of Recreation Sites Inventory (IAUSLA-21 +). The instrument was divided into two parts, the first referring to the characterization of the sample, and the second consisting of a Likert type scale, graduated in 5 points. The instrument was administered to an intentional sample of 60 subjects of both sexes over 60 years, familiar with computer use and that were willing to participate in the study, belonging to the Digital Inclusion Programs, at Rio Claro-SP and Sao Paulo-SP cities. Data from the application of the instruments were descriptively analyzed through the use of Thematic Content Analysis Technique and numerically illustrated by percentage. The results indicated that the built database met the objectives of the study, indicating good usability, but updates should be held whenever necessary. Therefore, it is suggested that new possibilities could be offered to the elderly, including those relating to leisure field, to broaden the perspectives of experiences facing the new technologies
