The sector provides more than 463 thousand jobs and represents 7.4% of the GDP. Most of the companies, mostly family businesses, do not have enough knowledge to implement a management model according to productivity standards and expected level of service. This article proposes a production model for the clothing industry based on Lean management, combining SIPOC, VSM, 5S techniques and a production system to increase profitability in the short term and make it sustainable in time. The model is validated by a case study in a representative company of the sector. The proposed activities were monitored through the study of work indicators, in which the results indicate an increase in productivity by 59% and the fulfillment by 48%.

The Air Cargo Scheduling Problem With Heterogenous Fleet

In this study, we consider the Air Cargo Scheduling Problem based on a real life application. The aim is to move cargo and passengers that have different priorities and delivery time window, from a number of origin airports to destination airports by means of a transportation system. The system has predefined carrier routes and a heterogeneous fleet of aircraft. The problem is formulated as a heterogeneous vehicle, multi commodity, pick-up, and delivery network flow problem with a large set of system specific constraints. The proposed model determines set of movement requirements assigned on each route leg and number and type of aircraft assigned for each route in a reasonable amount of time. The model is tested with the real and generated data and the results are compared with the current methodology under different scenarios. The model produced better results in a short amount of time compared to the current methodology.

Tabu search for ship routing and scheduling

This thesis examines exact and heuristic approaches to solve the Ship Routing and Scheduling Problem (SRSP). The method was developed to address the problem of loading cargos for many customers using heterogeneous vessels. Constraints relate to delivery time windows imposed by customers, the time horizon by which all deliveries must be made and vessel capacities. The objective is to minimise the overall operation cost, where all customers are satisfied. Two types of routing and scheduling are considered, one called single-cargo problem, where only one cargo can be loaded into a ship, and the second type called multi-cargo problem, where multiple products can be carried on a ship to be delivered to different customers. The exact approach comprises two stages. In the first stage, a number of candidate feasible schedules is generated for each ship in the fleet. The second stage is to model the problem as a set partitioning problem (SPP) where the columns are the candidate feasible schedules obtained in the first stage. The heuristic approach uses Tabu Search (TS). Most of the TS operations, such as insert and swap moves, tenure, tabu list, intensification, and diversification are used. The results of a computational investigation are presented. Solution quality and execution time are explored with respect to problem size and parameters controlling the tabu search such as tenure and neighbourhood size. The results showed that the average of the solution gap between TS solution and SPP solution is up to 28% (for small problems) and up to 18% for large problems. However, obtaining an optimal solution requires a large amount of computer time to produce the solution compared to obtaining approximate solutions using the TS approach. The use of Tabu Search for SRSP is novel and the results indicate that it is viable approach for large problems.

Mejora del proceso productivo de una línea de conservas de caballa para reducir el tiempo en el llenado del coche en una empresa pesquera

La investigación se desarrolló en una empresa productora y comercializadora de todo tipo de conservas a base de diversos pescados, dentro de su oferta tienen diversas presentaciones, una de ellas son las conservas de caballa. Precisamente en esta línea de producción se presentaba el problema a resolver: excesivo tiempo muerto en el traslado manual del producto, mediante coches, de la línea a la autoclave. Este proyecto se enfocó específicamente en mejorar el proceso productivo, reduciendo tiempos en la producción de la elaboración de la caballa, implementando una paletizadora y modificando el coche a estibar que pasa a la autoclave. Con esta mejora, se ha logrado reducir en un 93% el llenado de coche de autoclave. The research was conducted at a producer and marketer of all kinds of canned fish using diverse within its range they have different presentations, one of which is canned mackerel. Precisely in this production line was presented the problem to solve: excessive downtime in the manual transfer of the product by car, line the autoclave. This project is specifically focused on improving the production process, reducing time in the production of mackerel developing, implementing and modifying palletizing stow the car passing the autoclave. With this improvement, it has been reduced by 93% the car filled autoclave.

Extended delivery time analysis of opportunistic secondary packet transmission over multiple primary channels

Cognitive radio (CR) is one of the most prominent technique to deal with the radio spectrum scarcity problem. CR systems can improve radio spectrum utilization by opportunistically accessing the underutilized spectrum resource of the licensed users. In interweave implementation, the secondary user (SU) has to wait and locate spectrum holes before its transmission. Therefore, the extended delivery time (EDT) for the secondary user consist of both wait slots and transmission slots. We study the EDT analysis of fixed size secondary packet transmission over multiple primary channel. In particular, we introduce a birth-death based approach to model the cognitive transmission of the secondary user over multiple primary channels. We use this approach to derive the exact probability density function and probability mass function of EDT of the secondary transmission for both continuous and periodic sensing cases. We also present selected numerical and simulation results to verify our analytical approach and to illustrate the mathematical formulation. / Graduate

A comparative analysis of road bound and drone-based parcel deliveries : – An ex-ante evaluation regarding environmental impact, life cycle cost and delivery time

The increased demand for fast deliveries of goods have led to more costly and less environmentally friendly transports since many of the delivering trucks are not being fully loaded. The inefficiencies of deliveries have created a need for development of new freight systems. One alternative vehicle that has gained increasingly interest is usage of UAVs (unmanned arial vehicles), also known as drones. Several drones in varying sizes and configurations are being developed and applications within transports of both people and goods is seen as promising areas for the future. The study aims at investigating the performance of drone deliveries regarding time, cost, and environmental impact and to see what parameters are important for the performance. This have been made by comparing a UAV to two different vans (electric and HVO) for parcel deliveries in four chosen missions in both urban and rural settings. The evaluation takes a future perspective and are based on information received through both literature review and a market investigation.  The result from this study indicates that UAVs are likely to be a competitive future option for parcel deliveries regarding time and cost. This is concluded since the results shows significant savings in both costs and delivery time and these results are not changed by the sensitivity analyses. The result regarding environmental performance shows that the UAVs competitiveness depends on the vehicle of comparison. The drone has a better environmental performance than vans with fossil-based propellants but given the energy intensity of the UAV, it is not favourable compared to an electric van. The energy requirement of the drone is one of the most important factors affecting the performance. The energy requirements per km for the UAV increases when the routes become shorter since different phases of the flight have different energy intensity. The most demanding phase is lifting and when the distance between the stops is reduced this phase becomes more prominent. Another important factor is the possibility to reduce the travelled distance by taking the straight path with the UAV compared to being bound by the road infrastructure. The shorter distance for the UAV contributes both to reduced time but also reduced energy requirements which in its turn affect both environmental and economic performance. The distances and energy requirements are thus not the most important factor for the economic sustainability but rather the cost of staff. Since the drones are unmanned, several UAVs could be controlled by the same operator contributing to reduced cost of staff. The low energy requirements for the UAV in the longer and more rural cases makes this type of applications the most beneficial regarding environmental performance. Urban missions are instead the most preferable regarding cost and time, since a bigger share of the distance can be saved and the difference in speed between the UAV and the van is larger.

This masterś thesis, titled as The Study of Order Process Control in Company Invensys Appliance Controls s.r.o., deals with optimization of order process from the first entering of new order till the delivery of finished goods to final customer. Further I provide the basic characteristics and analysis of Invensys Company. The project part is divided into two parts. The first one is focused on explaining of operation of Kanban system and itś possibility to improve the material flow in company. The second one is focused on long-term forecasts (demand predictions) provided by customers, which can help to improve the process of order as well. In conclusion, I appraise advantages and disadvantages of Kanban system and forecasts.

Theoretic part of this work is focused on optimalization of order processing through organization. In practical part there are suggested changes that lead to reducing delivery time and to improvement of services for costumers.

Can a technological tool resolve issues in project management? : A case study for an IT projects consulting firm.

IT projects are complex and often numerous challenges arise during the projects’ execution. The ten knowledge areas designed to support projects management more often challenge include the project management team to deliver the outcome on time. The present study tries to answer the question of whether the use of a technological management tool in project management can help to solve most problematic knowledge areas, and to meet the delivery deadlines. The author runs a case study at an IT consulting firm. The purpose for the study is to investigate if technologies can help to resolve these issues, and to recommend a project management tool for more efficient delivery time. In a two phased study, first, the author identifies the project management knowledge areas that may have impacted IT project delivery delays, and second, the author investigates if using a project management tool can solve the delivery time issue. Results from the first phase show that delivery issues emerged at different levels, namely: stakeholders, resources, scope, quality, and integration management.  To investigate if a management tool could help to overcome the delays in delivery, a selection of technological tools was made. Based on the results from the first phase so the technological tool integrates functions and features for stakeholders, resources, scope quality, and integration management. The interviewees then ranked three technological tools and shared opinions on possible adoption of any of these tools. Final analysis show that interviewees think that proposed technological tools can resolve some of the issues experienced in the projects: mainly, the transition between departments, resource allocation, to visualise the quality management, plan for communication with stakeholders, and clearer handling of the project’s requirements. In the final results from the second interview, the tool that can help to solve issues with the five most problematic knowledge areas, and thus the delivery delays issue, for the case company is Genius Project.
