The Myth of Persephone: Body Objectification from Ancient to Modern

Daifotis, Melanie 01 January 2017 (has links)
Implications surrounding body ownership prove to be an enduring struggle from their prevalence in ancient literary sources through more modern, contemporary works. I analyze the notions of body ownership and its lack thereof set forth in Ovid’s Metamorphoses and the Homeric “Hymn to Demeter” regarding the myth of Persephone. Then, I consider larger meanings through analysis of the following contemporary works, approached in terms of the narrators: Rita Dove’s Mother Love, Louise Glück’s Averno, A.E. Stallings’s “Hades Welcomes His Bride” and “Persephone Writes a Letter to Her Mother,” and D.M. Thomas’s “Pomegranate.” The complexities within the myth itself amplify the complications in the contemporary interpretations of the myth. There is a range of differing levels of accepting sentiments in the contemporary works about the idea that no one ever has complete ownership or control over his own body. Comparing the different lenses through with the contemporary authors (and ancient authors!) chose to incorporate the myth of Persephone into their works reveals overarching themes, enlightening the reader about the nuances of the arguably most famous abduction in history.

Povědomí o biodynamickém způsobu hospodaření a míra jeho uplatnění v ČR

Dyntarová, Kristýna January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with biodynamic agriculture in the Czech Republic. The theoretical part concerns the definition of organic and biodynamic farming, including the identification of their mutual differences, and also describes the development of biodynamics in the global and domestic context, including the analysis of the current state. The experimental part is made up of several outputs. The first is the characteristic of a selected biodynamic farm which includes a mapping of opinions about the farm activities among the locals. The second is the analysis of information from biodynamic farmers or otherwise interested parties about their experience and opinions on the given issue. The final output is the evaluation of the information obtained through the survey detecting the awareness about biodynamic farming among selected target groups.

Importance de l'ADN déméthylase DEMETER lors du développement nodulaire au cours de la symbiose Medicago truncatula/Sinorhizobium meliloti / Importance of the DNA demethylase DEMETER for nodule development during the symbiosis Medicago truncatula/Sinorhizobium meliloti

Satgé, Carine 04 November 2016 (has links)
The legume-Rhizobium symbiosis leads to the formation a new organ, the root nodule, involving coordinated and massive induction of specific genes. Several genes controlling DNA methylation are spatially regulated within the Medicago truncatula nodule, with notably a demethylase gene, DEMETER (DME), mostly expressed in the differentiation zone. Here, we show that MtDME is essential for nodule development and regulates the expression of 1425 genes, certain critical for plant and bacterial cell differentiation. Bisulphite sequencing coupled to genomic capture enabled the identification of 474 regions that are differentially methylated during nodule development, including notably Nodule-specific Cysteine-Rich peptide genes. Decreasing DME expression by RNA interference led to hypermethylation and concomitant downregulation of 400 genes, most of them associated with nodule differentiation. Massive reprogramming of gene expression through DNA de-methylation is a new epigenetic mechanism controlling a key stage of indeterminate nodule organogenesis during symbiotic interactions.

"Deméter: a Repulsão Medida" / "Demeter: the measured repulse"

Massi, Maria Lucia Gili 02 August 2001 (has links)
The present study, including the translation of the Greek text, dedicates itself to the nature and sense of the Earth Mother, explaining that the Homeric Hymn commemorates the inviolable and eternal being of Demeter and her daughter Persephone, narrating the mother’s repulsive reaction before the paternal violence who gives their daughter as wife to the king of Hades, ignoring consanguineous laces that associate them. Angry, Earth Mother acts, putting in risc the cosmic stability until, limited by her coercive moîra, finds and proposes mediator accord, which ends the conflict and makes her power to ascend to the sacred order of the Zeus father’s power.

Vybrané vlnové jevy v zemské magnetosféře / Selected Wave Phenomena in the Earth's Magnetosphere

Bezděková, Barbora January 2017 (has links)
Electromagnetic waves are crucial for energy transfer in the nearly collision- less plasma of the Earth's inner magnetosphere. The waves in the frequency range 1-8 kHz whose visualisation in the form of frequency-time spectrograms reveals a harmonic frequency modulation of the wave intensity are called magnetospheric line radiation (MLR). Waves characterized by a nearly periodic time modulation of the wave intensity observed at frequencies between about 0.5 and 4 kHz are called quasiperiodic (QP) emissions. Although both types of the events were re- peatedly observed by ground-based instruments and low-altitude satellites, their origin remains still unclear. Between 2004 and 2010 these wave events were me- asured by the DEMETER spacecraft (almost Sun-synchronous orbit, altitude of about 700 km). This thesis presents a systematic study of the properties of the observed events, a comparison of the observations by the spacecraft and ground- based instruments, and an investigation of a relation to solar wind parameters.

Píša, David 16 October 2012 (has links) (PDF)
