Study of micromechanics of cavitation damage in UNS S 31803 high nitrogen stainless steel with and without work hardening.

Varela Jiménez, Luis Bernardo 04 October 2013 (has links)
This work aims to establish relationships between micro and nanostructure and cavitation-erosion resistance in high nitrogen stainless steels. These relations will be determined through the study of plastic deformation mechanisms and surface damage, as well as micro and nanostructure during vibratory cavitation testing. An UNS S 31803 samples with 0.9 N (%wt) were obtained by high temperature gas nitriding. Two sample groups were obtained: solubilized in solid solution and solubilized and work hardened. Vibratory cavitation tests were performed in distilled water. The damage mechanisms operating in different stages of wear were analyzed for different times in the same location using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Mass losses were periodically measured during the cavitation-erosion tests. From the results, it was observed that the (318HTGN+Sol) samples, with nitrogen in solid solution showed wear rates 16.1 times smaller compared to those of the solubilized UNS S30403 steel. The work-hardened (318HTGN+Enc) samples showed wear rates 172.4 times smaller than UNS S30403specimens. The comparison of the 318HTGN+Sol samples with the work-hardened 304L+Enc specimens showed wear rates 2 times smaller, while the 318HTGN+Enc samples showed a wear rate 17 times smaller. Finally, a considerable increase of incubation time was readily observed, which allowed the detailed observation of the deformation mechanisms and the identification of the slip bands formation during the early stages of cavitation erosion. Additionally it was possible to observe the way the grain boundaries and twin boundaries are damaged, acting as preferential sites where the damage initially occurs.

Effect of roughness on the wear of cold forming punches.

Souza, Thales Sardinha Garcia 13 September 2016 (has links)
The cost of any forged product for the automotive industry is highly influenced by the costs involved during the design and manufacturing of the forging tools. Ideally, these tools shall withstand a significant number of forging cycles, in order to distribute their manufacturing cost in as many parts as possible. There are several parameters that affect the tool wear behavior and forging companies have different approaches to address the tribological issues. Moreover, a misunderstanding of these parameters may lead to an undesirable premature tool wear. This work analyses the effect of roughness on the wear of cold forming punches. The adopted tribosystem is the second stage of a horizontal press and consists of a punch of M2 hardened steel in relative movement against a working piece of SAE 10B22 normalized steel. Fifteen punches were manufactured with three roughness levels and their wear was measured after 52.000 and 102.000 forging cycles. A 3D optical profiler and a Scanning Electronic Microscope (SEM) were used to access the surface characteristics of the punches before and after the production batches. Analysis of the counter body as well as of the interfacial element (oil) were also conducted. The results showed that all punches with higher roughness failed prematurely, while the polished ones as well as the intermediate ones presented equivalent wear. Considering that the polishing process contributes significantly to the manufacturing cost of the punches, it is expected that a forgery that consumes those tools in large-scale can get great economic benefits with this work.

Thermomechanical behavior and adhesive wear of matrilas at nanoscalemolecular dynamics and continuum mechanics analysis.

Bortoleto, Eleir Mundim 29 June 2015 (has links)
Formulations based on continuum mechanics are generally accurate in a macroscale level, but sometimes cannot be used, or it is not conceptually correct to use for the understanding of small scale phenomena. These limitations may be observed in the study of tribological phenomena at the nanoscale, which may consequently require new experimental, theoretical and computational methods in order to analyze these phenomena with the required resolution. Atomistic simulations may describe phenomena at small scale, but the required number of atoms to be modeled, i.e. the computational cost, usually becomes very high. Moreover, simulation methods associated with continuum mechanics (such as the Finite Element Method - FEM) are more interesting in relation to computational cost, but they are not accurate for atomic scale studies. The combination of these two approaches can then enable a more realistic understanding of tribological phenomena. This work discusses the basic concepts of friction and models for friction at atomic scale. This work also presents studies, by means of numerical simulation, for the analysis of friction and wear mechanisms in the contact of materials. The problem is approached considering different scales, and basing the analysis both on Continuum Mechanics and Molecular Dynamics (MD). For both methods, numerical simulations with increasing complexity were conducted to reproduce the contact between surfaces, starting from an initial model that simulates the effect of crystalline defects during the MD analysis of pure slip. In a second stage, adhesion phenomenon were implemented through continuum mechanics models. The validation of the models and the coupling between the two approaches were conducted by comparison with literature.

Usage of instrumented microscratch tests for the study of expanded austenite properties.

Sato, Fernando Luís 29 October 2014 (has links)
One of the main reasons for the common utilization of austenitic stainless steels by various industries remains on their great corrosion resistance. On the other hand, the poor mechanical properties of austenite restrict the use of these alloys in systems which require better tribological performance without decreasing their corrosion resistance. Conventional case hardening techniques promote precipitate formation, reducing availability of passivation elements in metallic matrix, what can ease the action of corrosive external agents. The discovery of a carbon and/or nitrogen supersaturated phase, called expanded austenite or S-phase, brought new perspectives over case hardening options for austenitic stainless steels. Obtained by recent techniques based on plasma, expanded austenite has very high hardness, around 14 GPa, without reducing corrosion resistance, since no precipitate is noticeable by optical or scanning electronic microscopy. Using testing apparatus that simulates real work conditions, mechanical characterization of expanded austenite layers gives an important set of empirical data. These data are useful for comprehension and modeling of tribological phenomena occurring in a given mechanical system. In this way, instrumented microscratch test appears as an interesting option to be used in studies oriented to the Surface Engineering field. This work presents results from a series of instrumented microscratch tests performed over AISI 316 stainless steel samples with an expanded austenite layer. Plasma nitriding surface treatment was carried out during 20 h, in an active screen DC reactor under 400 ºC and atmosphere compounded by three parts of nitrogen for each part of hydrogen (3N2:1H2). The tribological behavior of the expanded austenite layer was characterized in a series of linear scratch tests. The results show that in the beginning of the scratch test the coefficient of friction was kept smaller than 0,1. When the first cracks appear the apparent coefficient of friction steadily increases, indicating that cracking of the nitrided layer lead to an increase of the coefficient of friction. Although the expanded austenite layer cracks, no adhesive failure was observed, the hardened layer being preserved during the whole scratch test.

Effect temperature, frequency and load in the wear and coefficient of friction for valves and valve seats materials of flex-fuel engines.

Zuleta Durango, Deisson Alexander 29 September 2016 (has links)
In most of the mechanical assemblies there is relative motion between components, and as a result of this relative sliding action, frictional forces on the sliding surface result in removal or displacement of mass (or volume) of the material. The power generation of internal combustion engines comes from chemical energy transformation into heat through air fuel combustion with further expansion of gases generating the reciprocating movement of power cell (pistons, rod and crankshaft). For flex fuel engines, the ethanol increases power, leading to higher thermo-mechanical forces and consequently higher friction between its components. The valve/valve seat pair is one of the most affected system due to this change, leading to the need of more accurate analysis of its wear mechanisms, its operating parameters effects and his behavior regarding the friction so making possible to choose properly materials with lower mass loss (wear rate) and coefficient of friction. Reciprocating tests had been used to tribological studies of valve materials with surface treatment purpose. The most important test boundary conditions are the engine operating conditions. Therefore, the load, speed and temperature parameters definition is not easy since for some test equipment those variables are not independent. Besides due to tribological system complexity the variable interaction affects its results. The present research goal was divided in two groups. The first one analyzes the normal force, frequency and temperature effect on friction coefficient and wear, independently of each other. It was used a SRV-4 reciprocating tribometer with a sphere (AISI 52100 steel) against several disc materials (steel and sintered intermetallic alloys of Nb). The second one consisted in the characterization of wear mechanisms of valve/valve seat from different engines that were submitted to different test (engine dynamometer test bench and vehicle). The coefficient of friction (?) and mass loss were measured in order to define the studied systems tribological performance. Besides the both disc and sphere wear scars such as valve/valve seat were analyzed using optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy of X-ray (EDS) and Raman spectroscopy. For the tested intermetallic alloys of Nb with AISI 52100 sphere it was found the following wear mechanisms after SEM-EDS analyses: abrasion, adhesion and oxidation. In the case of the evaluated engines, several damages were observed in both intake and exhaust valves/valve seats; however, the oxidation occurred only on exhaust valves, probably due to high operating temperature.

Comportamento mecânico de sistemas revestidos submetidos a esforços de contato normais e tangenciais. / Mechanical behavior of coated systems under normal and tangential stresses.

The deposition of wear resistant thin films is a common practice to improve the tribological behavior (friction, wear, lubrication) of several mechanical components. In order to guarantee the adequate performance of the coated systems, it is important to evaluate the mechanical behavior. A method for evaluation and study of the coated systems is the scratch test. The test is used to analyze the fracture of the coating (cohesive failure), or the adhesion of the coating (adhesive failure), and the failure modes of hard coatings (HV>=5 GPa) and thin (<=30 ?m) deposited on ceramic or metallic substrates. The characterization of some failure modes in coated systems is related to qualitative stress models at the contact region and the scratch edges. In this work, the behavior of the Sxx and Szz stresses developed during the scratch test was analyzed in different combinations of coatings/substrates. The work was based on the development of 3D and 2D simulation models using the finite element method (FEM). In the simulation, a rigid particle (with the geometry of Rockwell C indenter) applied progressive load to 2N along a 0.5 mm distance. In the study, the hardness was expressed as yield stress values in the coating and the substrate. In addition, it was examined the effect of coating residual stress (-3 GPa), as well as the effect of the thickness, the friction coefficient, and roughness of the surface and interface in the stresses behavior. The fact of obtaining tension values, which exceed the yield stress of coating implies the possible occurrence of failure. The results obtained by simulation indicated that the coating combinations with low yield stress (Sy < 3000 MPa) lead to Sxx and Szz stress values in the level of the coated yield stress. The coatings with yield stress Sy > 5000 MPa enable to obtain low Sxx and Szz values. The use of the residual stresses (-3 GPa) as well as increasing the thickness of the coating are very important factors in the coated systems, especially in the case of coatings with Sy > 5000 MPa. The effect of the friction coefficient leads to stress values (Sxx or Szz) sufficiently high in most of the combinations. This factor is the most important variable leading to the greater number of times that the value of the coating yield stress was reached. The roughness is responsible for Sxx stress values (inside groove). Increasing the roughness of the system increased the possibility of exceeding stress values in the surface and interface coating. Finally, by the complexity of the number of variables that affect the scratch test, the numerical simulation suggests that the fact of only analyzing the hardness of materials, as well as other isolated variables of the scratch test does not allow reproduction of a map of failures similar to that proposed in the literature.
