Robotic Fabrication Workflows for Environmentally Driven Facades

Even though computer simulation of environmental factors and manufacturing technologies have experienced a fast development, architectural workflows that can take advantage of the possibilities created by these developments have been left behind and architectural design processes have not evolved at the same rate. This research presents design to fabrication workflows that explore data driven design to improve performance of facades, implementing for this purpose computational tools to handle environmental data complexity and proposes robotic fabrication technologies to facilitate façade components fabrication. During this research three design experiments were conducted that tested variations on the design to fabrication workflow, approaching the flow of information in top-down and bottom-up processes. Independent variables such as material, environmental conditions and structural behavior, are the framework in which workflow instances are generated based on dependent variables such as geometry, orientation and assembly logic. This research demonstrates the feasibility of a robotic based fabrication method informed by a multi-variable computational framework plus a simulation evaluator integrated into a design to fabrication workflow and put forward the discussion of a fully automated scenario. / Master of Science

pablo@espaciosdigitales.org / In this paper, the author explains why architects who know how to use scripts have an advantage over the ones who just know how to manipulate a specific software. The reason behind this affirmation is that knowing how to program frees the architect from the rules and language of the interactive software. To prove his point, the author organized two workshops where students at the school of architecture learned to use Rhinoscript. The students didn’t create a new interface, but used an existing one. They adapted the program (Rhino) to a design problem they had formulated at the beginning of the workshop. Students could have also used MaxScript (3DS Max) and MelScript (Maya).

The thesis is primarily concerned with the design, construction and preliminary commissioning of a novel polarimeter for full three-dimensional analysis of electron spin polarisation. The polarimeter is described in detail, together with the theoretical basis for its operation. Studies of an amorphous ferromagnetic alloy, Co66Fe4Ni1B14Si15, and its application as a secondary standard are presented. Finally, a design study of a GaAs polarised electron source, capable of providing both longitudinal and transverse polarisations, is detailed.

Cost-Effective Integrated Wireless Monitoring of Wafer Cleanliness Using SOI Technology

abstract: The thesis focuses on cost-efficient integration of the electro-chemical residue sensor (ECRS), a novel sensor developed for the in situ and real-time measurement of the residual impurities left on the wafer surface and in the fine structures of patterned wafers during typical rinse processes, and wireless transponder circuitry that is based on RFID technology. The proposed technology uses only the NMOS FD-SOI transistors with amorphous silicon as active material with silicon nitride as a gate dielectric. The proposed transistor was simulated under the SILVACO ATLAS Simulation Framework. A parametric study was performed to study the impact of different gate lengths (6 μm to 56 μm), electron motilities (0.1 cm2/Vs to 1 cm2/Vs), gate dielectric (SiO2 and SiNx) and active materials (a-Si and poly-Si) specifications. Level-1 models, that are accurate enough to acquire insight into the circuit behavior and perform preliminary design, were successfully constructed by analyzing drain current and gate to node capacitance characteristics against drain to source and gate to source voltages. Using the model corresponding to SiNx as gate dielectric, a-Si:H as active material with electron mobility equal to 0.4 cm2/V-sec, an operational amplifier was designed and was tested in unity gain configuration at modest load-frequency specifications. / Dissertation/Thesis / M.S. A Fundamental Model Methodology for the Analysis, Design and Fabrication of a Narrow Transparency Window in a Bulk Meta-Material

abstract: The optical valley of water, where water is transparent only in the visible range, is a fascinating phenomenon and cannot be modeled by conventional dielectric material modeling. While dielectric properties of materials can be modeled as a sum of Lorentz or Debye simple harmonic oscillators, water is the exception. In 1992 Diaz and Alexopoulos published a causal and passive circuit model that predicted the window of water by adding a “zero shunt” circuit in parallel with every Debye and Lorentz circuit branch. Other than the Diaz model, extensive literature survey yielded no universal dielectric material model that included water or offered an explanation for this window phenomenon. A hybrid phenomenological model of water, proposed by Shubitidze and Osterberg, was the only model other than the Diaz-Alexopoulos model that tried to predict and match the optical valley of water. However, we show that when we apply the requirement that the permittivity function must be a complex analytic function, it fails our test of causality and the model terms lack physical meaning, exhibiting various mathematical and physical contradictions. Left with only the Diaz proposed fundamental model as the only casual model, this dissertation explores its physical implications. Specifically, the theoretical prescription of Kyriazidou et al for creating artificial dielectric materials with a narrow band transparency is experimentally demonstrated for the first time at radiofrequencies. It is proposed that the most general component of the model of the frequency dependent permittivity of materials is not the simple harmonic oscillator but rather the harmonic oscillator augmented by the presence of a zero shunt circuit. The experimental demonstration illustrates the synthesis and design of a new generation of window materials based on that model. Physically realizable Lorentz coatings and RF Debye “molecules” for creating the desired windows material are designed using the full physics computational electromagnetic code. The prescribed material is then implemented in printed circuit board technology combined with composite manufacturing to successfully fabricate a lab demonstrator that exhibits a narrow RF window at a preselected frequency of interest.
