O crescimento populacional, assim como o imperativo ético de estender plenamente os recursos médico-assistenciais modernos a todas as camadas da população, exige investimentos elevados e crescentes. Assim, é fundamental que os Hospitais Públicos avaliem seus custos visando a otimização da qualidade dos serviços prestados à sociedade. Neste sentido, este trabalho abordará a importante questão relacionada ao desperdício na área da Saúde. O "tubo de ensaio" para a coleta de informações foi o Hospital de Clínicas da Universidade Estadual de Campinas - UNICAMP. Após definir, classificou o desperdício nos seus diferentes componentes. O desperdício foi analisado nos diversos serviços do Hospital, sendo que o Centro Cirúrgico tomou-se, segundo a percepção dos funcionários, o principal consumidor de materiais hospitalares e conseqüentemente um local prioritário para a análise de potencial desperdício. Neste trabalho estão expostas algumas discussões e sugestões, procurando oferecer subsídios para o equacionamento dos problemas relacionados ao desperdício nos hospitais públicos / Abstract: Among the most important public politics, in the sense of promoting the good to be social, they are the planning and the actions gone back to education and health. The population growth, as well as the ethical imperative of extending the resources fully doctor-assistent modern the all the layers of the population, it demands high and growing investments. Like this, it is fundamental that the Public Hospital evaluation its costs seeking the otimization of the quality of the services rendered the society. ln this sense, this work will approach the important subject related to the waste in the area of the Health. The "rehearsal tube" for the collection of information it was the Hospital of Clinics of the State University of Campinas-UNICAMP. After defining, was classified the waste in its dilferent components. The waste was analyzed in the several services of the Hospital, and the Surgical Center became, according to the employees' perception, the principal consumer of materiais hospitalizes and consequently a priority place for the analysis of potential waste. ln this work they are exposed some discussions and suggestions, trying to offer subsidies for the equacionation ofthe problems related to the waste in the public hospital / Mestrado / Gestão da Qualidade Total / Mestre em Engenharia Mecânica
