Elite Networks and The Redevelopment of The Cecil B. Moore Neighborhood

Schrider, David David January 2023 (has links)
This dissertation project explores how three distinct networks worked for and in opposition to the proposed construction of three Temple University athletic facilities all located within the Northern Philadelphia neighborhood of Cecil B Moore. Specifically, I conduct a network analysis of the three networks of elites who advocated for the construction of Pearson and McGonigle Hall athletic facility in the late 1960s, the Liacouras Center in the mid-nineties, and the contemporary proposed construction of a new football stadium in order to gain a deeper understanding of how these pro- development networks operate, promote urban development, and to explore how these pro-development networks have evolved over time. I do the same for the networks of activists who have attempted to halt these development projects. I employ a mixed method approach which combines ethnographic field observations, in-depth interviews, and a quantitative investigation. I answer the following research questions: 1) How have the demographic characteristics of actors who were members of the Pearson and McGonigle Hall, Liacouras Center, and the Football Pro and Anti-Development Networks changed over time? 2) What strategies were employed by the Pro-Stadium Network to promote Temple development and why were these strategies unsuccessful? 3) What strategies were employed by the Stomper Network to oppose Temple development and why were these strategies successful? I find that while across development eras pro-development networks remain majority White, Democrat, Male, and most network members were working in the educational field, there are noteworthy changes in network demographics. I find there is less consistency in the demographics of anti-development networks over time. Although these networks remain majority Black and Democrat, there is a noteworthy increase in Female network members and White network members over time. In my analysis of how the Pro-Stadium Network promoted Temple development, I examine the strategies employed by the Pro-Stadium Network, focusing specifically on the network's public outreach strategy. I address why the network was not successful at convincing residents and politicians to support the building of a football stadium in Cecil B Moore. I find that the Pro-Stadium Network did not provide basic details about the project, and this was an obvious omission. I also address why the Pro-Stadium Network might have been more successful if it attempted to establish a dialogue with residents prior to announcing the plans for the stadium. However, it is not clear that even with a detailed plan the Pro-Stadium Network would have been successful. It is possible that the political currents had shifted since the last period of Temple development. In my analysis of how the Stomper Network opposed Temple development I examine the strategies employed by the Stomper Network, focusing specifically on the network's public outreach strategy. I find the Stomper Network attempted to establish a dialogue with residents immediately after the network became active. The Stomper Network was also able to check the effectiveness of its messaging with residents and to counter the claims of the Pro-Stadium Network. This contributed to the Stomper Network's ability to exploit the shortcomings of the Pro-Stadium Network's outreach strategy. I hypothesize that the possibility that a growing negative view of urban development in Cecil B Moore made the construction of the football stadium impossible. I focus some of this discussion on how the Pro-Stadium Network has received more scrutiny than the two historical pro-development networks. In doing so, I hypothesize that this growing public scrutiny of Temple development projects in Cecil B Moore and an emerging negative view of urban development may have hampered the Pro-Stadium Network's attempts to build a football stadium in Cecil B Moore. I find theories of urban growth and elite theory fit the development processes for both the Pearson and McGonigle Hall and the Liacouras Center. However, the attempt to construct a football stadium in Cecil B Moore is not consistent with theories of urban growth and elite theory. The struggle over Temple's proposed football stadium is more consistent with pluralist theory and Henri Lefebvre’s right to the city. / Sociology

A Longitudinal Assessment of the Career Success of Mentors in Developmental Networks

Dhaenens, Andrew Julian 14 December 2018 (has links)
Mentoring research contends that although the benefits of a mentoring relationship are primarily directed towards the protégés, mentoring relationships are mutually beneficial and provide substantial career benefits to the mentor. Despite increased attention on mentoring in development networks, the mentor’s perspective has been notably neglected and the objective and subjective career benefits of mentors have not been articulated. This dissertation seeks to redress this lack of understanding by hypothesizing that mentoring fosters personal learning and objective and subjective career success by leveraging the mentor’s network centrality. I also suggest that emotional intelligence and proactive personality will enhance these career outcomes with moderating effects. In addition to articulating the heretofore unexplored process through which the positive career effects of participating in developmental networks are derived, this paper extends knowledge by theorizing how providing mentoring creates stores of social capital, which contributes to career success. In the mentoring literature, the career success outcomes of mentors are more assumed than empirically known due to the privation of longitudinal evidence to support these claims. This dissertation utilizes a longitudinal study to examine the social networks and career success outcomes of mentors within a developmental network with an investigation of the effects that a mentor’s network centrality, proactive personality, and emotional intelligence have on the career outcomes of mentoring others.

Learn 2.0 technologies and the continuing professional development of secondary school mathematics teachers

Van Staden, C.J., Van Der Westhuizen, D. January 2013 (has links)
Published Article / The paper reports on a Learn 2.0 technology that was used to support the continuing professional development of mathematics teachers at a secondary school. Design Based Research methods were used within a Multiphase Mixed Methods research framework to create professional development opportunities that were subsequently monitored by Social Network Analysis techniques. We demonstrate that Learn 2.0 technologies can indeed support the continuing professional development of teachers and improve their performance, and also that Social Network Analysis is an effective method to describe, comprehend, clarify and transparently monitor teacher engagement during online professional development activities. We identify 'participation' as a key pre-determinant to success.

The Role Of Local And Global Networking For Tourism Firms And Clusters: The Case Of Antalya

Erkus Ozturk, Hilal 01 November 2008 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the role of local and global networking, institutionalization and institutional thickness of tourism firms and clusters in order to explain their contribution to tourism development. Recent development literature emphasizes the crucial role of different level of networks, institutionalizations and clustering in the development of regions. In this respect, this thesis tries to explore the role of networks, new organizational set-ups and clustering by adapting them to tourism case. It is hypothesized that global networks are also important in addition to local networks, and play crucial role in the performance of tourism firms and clusters. On this basis, types and intensity of local &amp / global networks in tourism organizations and clusters, development of associational structure in tourism clusters and firms, and the level of relations between different associations and tourism firms are tried to be examined by focusing on the theoretical framework on development models, networking, institution and cluster based studies. This thesis employs a quantitative method of analysis and social network analysis for identifiying the level of networks of tourism firms&amp / organizations and clusters. In this way, this thesis describes their contribution to local tourism development. Although tourism is somewhat different from other sectors, findings of the case study generally support the claims of the development literature for tourism case.

To deepen this approach we elected as its general objective understanding, from our experience, as the implementation of Pedagogical Workshops and the support of a Solidarity Network can contribute to the Development of Community neighborhood Areial and its surroundings, in the municipality of Mamanguape, Paraíba, Brazil. For this, we have three specific objectives: 1) Present the phenomenon through the record of the history of the neighborhood, the fair of the Areial and the deployment of the project Ecofeira Iande; 2) Describe on the concepts relating to the promotion of Community Development and Solidarity Network; 3) Reflect on the Community Development of the Areial through relationship learners X community. The theme is very relevant, because combined with the lack of scientific literature on this subject and, motivated by professional work developed by our site, we chose the case study, using the methodology of qualitative and subjectivist, involving the interpretation of data collected through searches, documentary and field. For tell this story, we use in some titles, the metaphor of a journey in the direction of the site through a vehicle: the Pedagogical Workshops (OPs) and its support strategy (Network of Solidarity and Support). We have as resulted, the finding that, in spite of almost 63 years of existence of the neighborhood and almost 20 years of existence of a fair public site, the current index of Community Development (IDC) the neighborhood is small, however, the project Ecofeira Iande has been collaborating with the mobilization of its residents, merchants and local institutions in favor of changes related to CommunityDevelopment, through actions aimed at improving the environment and the generation of jobs and income in the neighborhood and in its surroundings.
