Digital art therapy and trauma : a psycho-educational perspectiveSwanepoel, Marna 25 July 2014 (has links)
This study explores the possible use of digital media as an effective psychotherapeutic aid
in art psychotherapy, specifically in addressing the effects of trauma experienced by
adolescents.
A literature review provides evidence on what exactly can be understood under the
concepts 'art psychotherapy' and 'digital media'. The literature study further
investigates trauma, its treatment and how art psychotherapy can be used as a
psychotherapeutic tool with adolescents who have been exposed to trauma.
An empirical study including six participants, chosen through a specific sampling process,
and whose background information regulates the appropriate methods of intervention
demonstrates the practicality of digital media in art psychotherapy. Data gathered from
pre-assessment activities, art psychotherapy sessions and post-assessment activities are
analysed, interpreted, and reduced through a systematic process. The empirical findings are
then presented in a detailed, concise manner
From the empirical investigation, it is determined that digital media can be used as a
successful tool in art psychotherapy, specifically with adolescents who have experienced
trauma. The researcher gained experience in the implementation of digital media in art
psychotherapy and was able to provide valuable information about this practice,
specifically for professionals interested in the field of art psychotherapy. The researcher
was also able to identify limitations and further areas for research in this field. / Psychology of Education / M. A. (Guidance and Counselling)--University of South Africa --2013

Coming Soon From a Screen Near You: The Camera’s Gaze in the Age of SurveillanceUnknown Date (has links)
Within the past thirty years, privacy concerns among American citizens are rising
with counter-terrorist surveillance going beyond targeting people of interest. These
concerns are reflected in American cinema where many contemporary films have
explored surveillance in society. The textual analyses presented in the thesis will focus on
three such films, Strange Days (1995), Southland Tales (2005), and Nightcrawler (2014).
Throughout this thesis, I examine how each of these films offers a unique, reflexive take
on surveillance, adhering to generative mechanisms that evoke differing attitudes about
surveillance through their form. My analysis draws on Laura Mulvey and Patricia Pisters’
theories on the gaze to understand the politics of looking in contemporary surveillance
cinema and highlight how cinematic scopophilia evolved into a networked perspective.
My analysis suggests that the politics of surveillance cinema is reflected in these films as
their differences mirror the changing perception of surveillance and the gaze over time. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2016. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

A study of Myspace and Facebook from the perspectives of uses and gratification and impression managementUrista, Mark A. 01 January 2008 (has links)
This thesis explored MySpace and Facebook, two popular social networking sites (SNS), from the perspectives of the uses and gratification model and impression management theory. As a qualitative exploratory study, this thesis had three objectives. First, it investigated why young people use SNS. Second, it sought to discover how members use SNS for self-presentation. Finally, it aimed to contribute to the current body of literature and serve as a basis for future qualitative and quantitative studies on SNS.
The focus groups that were conducted for this thesis elicited ten themes that provided insights on the motivations and behaviors of individuals who use SNS for needs fulfillment and impression management. These themes included: 1) efficient communication, 2) convenient communication, 3) curiosity of others, 4) popularity, 5) relationship formation and reinforcement, 6) self-enhancement, 7) otherenhancement, 8) self-disclosure, 9) conformity and 1 0) identity-management.
Based on the first five themes, the study suggested that an emerging theory of instant gratification is being developed. The theory helps researchers explain why young people use SNS and predict what factors motivate young people to get ,_ involved heavily in SNS. Based on the second five themes, this study confirmed the relevance of Goffi:nan's theories of the presentation of the self in explaining how young people manage their impressions through SNS. As a powerful socialization agent, SNS provide new opportunities and diverse ways of presenting one's self online. Though there are some evident differences between online and face-to-face social interaction, it is clear that Goffman's theories will continue to help researchers explain self-presentation within the context of SNS.
