Finding the shipboard relative position of a rotary wing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with ultasonic ranging

Gleeson, Jeremy, Information Technology & Electrical Engineering, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 2008 (has links)
Simple, cheap and reliable echo-based ultrasonic ranging systems such as the Polaroid ranging unit are easily applied to indoor applications. However, to measure the range between an unmanned helicopter and a moving ship deck at sea using ultrasound requires a more robust ranging system, because rushing air and breaking water are known ultrasound noise sources. The work of designing, constructing and testing such a system is described in this dissertation. The compact, UAV ready ultrasound transmitter module provides high power, broadband arbitrary signal generation. The separate field-ready receiver is based on a modern embedded Digital Signal Processor (DSP), providing high speed matched-filter correlation processing. Large time-bandwidth signalling is employed to maximise the signal to noise ratio of the ranging system. Synthesised experiments demonstrate the ability of the correlation processing to reliably recover timing from signals buried in noise. Real world experiments demonstrate decimetre accuracy with two centimetre resolution, ten metre range and 32Hz refresh rate. A maximum boresight range of up to 38m is supported.

Balance Charging for Series Connected Batteries

Tsai, I-Sheng 07 June 2002 (has links)
Due to the differences in batteries of a series-connected battery bank, the restored capacity in each battery may not be the same when being charged. In order to extend battery cycle life, the charger for the battery bank must have the capability of charging equalization. This thesis proposes a non-dissipative balance charging circuit based on buck-boost topology for a series-connected battery bank. Each battery in a battery bank is associated with a buck-boost converter. This topology can efficiently alleviate the unbalance of charge among batteries by taking off the charge from the affluently charged batteries and then allotting to those insufficient ones. To accomplish this complicated and accurate control, a digital signal processor (DSP) with sensors and interface circuits is adopted. It monitors the variations of battery voltages, activates the associated buck-boost converter, and adjusts the duty ratio of the converter to regulate the energy to be released. In virtue of the adoption of digital control kernel, the control circuit can be simple and the control flexibility can be favored. A battery bank with four series connected lead-acid batteries is used for illustrating the operating behavior and describing the operation modes of the balance charging circuit. The results of experiments convincingly advocate the applicability of the proposed approach.

Bergas Jané, Joan 28 July 2000 (has links)

A DSP embedded optical naviagtion system

Gunnam, Kiran Kumar 30 September 2004 (has links)
Spacecraft missions such as spacecraft docking and formation flying require high precision relative position and attitude data. Although Global Positioining Systems can provide this capability near the earth, deep space missions require the use of alternative technologies. One such technology is the vision-based navigation (VISNAV) sensor system developed at Texas A&M University. VISNAV comprises an electro-optical sensor combined with light sources or beacons. This patented sensor has an analog detector in the focal plane with a rise time of a few microseconds. Accuracies better than one part in 2000 of the field of view have been obtained. This research presents a new approach involving simultaneous activation of beacons with frequency division multiplexing as part of the VISNAV sensor system. In addition, it discusses the synchronous demodulation process using digital heterodyning and decimating filter banks on a low-power fixed point DSP, which improves the accuracy of the sensor measurements and the reliability of the system. This research also presents an optimal and computationally efficient six-degree-of-freedom estimation algorithm using a new measurement model based on the attitude representation of Modified Rodrigues Parameters.

Introducing Machine Learning in a Vectorized Digital Signal Processor / Introduktion av Maskininlärning på en Vektoriserad Digital Signalprocessor

Ridderström, Linnéa January 2023 (has links)
Machine learning is rapidly being integrated into all areas of society, however, that puts a lot of pressure on resource costraint hardware such as embedded systems. The company Ericsson is gradually integrating machine learning based on neural networks, so-called deep learning, into their radio products. One promising product is their vectorized Digital Signal Processor (DSP) that are based upon the machine learning suitable Single Instruction, Multiple Data (SIMD) paradigm and Very Long Instruction Word (VLIW) architecture. However, despite the suitability of the SIMD paradigm, the embedded system needs to efficiently execute a computation-intensive deep learning algorithm with proper use of its limited resources. Therefore commonly used methods of implementing each layer of the computation-intensive Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), a type of Deep Neural Network (DNN), have been used and evaluated its implementation on the hardware and to assess the vectorized DSP’s deep learning suitability and capabilities. Despite the suitability of the hardware, the implementation utilized less than half of the available resources at all times during the execution. The main limitations were identified to be the limited 16-bit element instructions. To enhance the performance and improve the utilization of the available resources, easy-to-implement hardware instructions have been suggested. This work has made the first steps of implementing an efficiently performing CNN implementation on the examined vectorized DSP.
