During the second half of the 19th century, Maca?ba had in the commerce one of this principle economic base a contribution for which the city became one of the main commercial warehouses of the East coast of the Rio Grande do Norte region. This helped lead to the growth of Maca?ba s fair, which proved to be one of the most important existing in the state until the 1970 s. In the last two decades of the 20th century, certain elements represented challenges to the fair at Maca?ba. These challenges stimulated substantial changes in the fair s dynamics which include the growth and expansion of the commercial and service sector, primarily though supermarkets; consolidation among the commercial and distribution networks, represented by the Central Office of Supply of the Rio Grande do Norte S/A (Ceasa/RN), by the wholesale and refrigeration companies; and the modernization of transportation methods, which permitted an expanded reach for these networks. Even with all these changes, the fair continues to be one of the strongest aspects of the city being the center of resistance against the surge of new forms of commerce and consumption in the city (notable the supermarkets) and the diffusion of other aspects of globalization. The fair has economic importance, as it offers a popular marketplace for the commercialization of very different products and a means for supplying goods to the residents of the city and the rural communities of Maca?ba and the surrounding municipalities; and socio-cultural importance in that the fair is a place where popular tradition is expressed, a place where a great number of parallel activities occur, a place for meeting again and again, of conversations, of manifestations of culture and art, and of socialization in all of its dimensions / O presente trabalho de pesquisa objetiva fazer uma reflex?o sobre as diversas modifica??es ocorridas na din?mica socioespacial da feira de Maca?ba no per?odo compreendido entre 1960 e 2006. Durante a segunda metade do s?culo XIX, Maca?ba teve no com?rcio uma das principais bases econ?micas o que contribuiu para que a cidade fosse o principal entreposto comercial do litoral leste do Rio Grande Norte. Esta condi??o propiciou o surgimento de sua feira, a qual se destacou como uma das principais existentes no estado at? por volta da d?cada 1970. Nas ?ltimas duas d?cadas do s?culo XX, alguns elementos representaram fatores de concorr?ncia para a feira de Maca?ba, o que possibilitou modifica??es substanciais na sua din?mica, dentre os quais se destacam: o crescimento e a expans?o do setor de com?rcio e de servi?os, atrav?s principalmente dos supermercados; a consolida??o das redes de comercializa??o e distribui??o, representado pela Central de Abastecimento do Rio Grande do Norte S.A(Ceasa/RN), pelas empresas atacadistas e pelos frigor?ficos; e, a moderniza??o dos meios de transportes, que permitiu uma expans?o do alcance espacial dessas redes. Mesmo com todas essas mudan?as, a feira ainda permanece como um dos tra?os mais marcantes da din?mica da cidade sendo um l?cus de resist?ncia frente ao surgimento de novas formas de com?rcio e de consumo na cidade (notadamente dos supermercados) e a difus?o de outros vetores da globaliza??o. A feira possui uma import?ncia econ?mica, pois s?o mercados peri?dicos populares destinados ? comercializa??o dos mais diferentes produtos e ao abastecimento da popula??o residente na cidade e nas comunidades rurais de Maca?ba e de outros munic?pios pr?ximos; e sociocultural na medida que a feira ? o lugar onde se expressa com mais for?a a tradi??o popular, o lugar onde se realizam um grande n?mero de atividades paralelas, o lugar dos encontros e reencontros, das conversas, das manifesta??es culturais e art?sticas, da sociabilidade em todas as suas dimens?es

Nowadays, the city of Nova Cruz takes over importance in the potiguar social and spatial scenario due to its condition of central city which is practiced for decades in Potiguar Agreste Microregion. Beginning with its formation process connected with traveler‟s hostel which assisted the activity of cattle transportation, further in time by the golden era of cotton production in its territory, it was noticed that its importance in relation with the nearby towns has been happening differently throughout time. From the year 1991 on, the town of Nova Cruz has gone through a territory restructuring of its urban area due to the relocation of the open market from Downtown neighborhood to S?o Sebasti?o neighborhood. Such territorial movement resulted in a reformation of the town‟s urban space, promoting in both neighborhoods urban growth and the expansion of commercial activity associated with the migration of the commercial center of the city. The transference of the commercial area has caused these processes through the new uses of the land towards the S?o Sebasti?o region, it has also caused a decrease in market value of the downtown area as a result of the breakdown of previous existing business activities, their service contribution and the citizen migration, establishing a space and socioeconomic portrait in the neighborhood. From this context, our analysis seeks to understand the social and spatial impacts occurred in Downtown neighborhood, the way in which the production and reproduction of the urban space in S?o Sebasti?o neighborhood and the implications resulted from the actions of the administrative power in restructuring of the urban space of Nova Cruz. In order to do so, a bibliographical research was used to compose our theoretic-conceptual mark, discussing the matter with authors such as Roberto Lobato Corr?a, Ana Fani, Milton Santos, Manuel Castells e Heri Lefvbre, among others, discussing on the subject of urban analysis, the concepts of urban space and the process of reproduction of the urban space. A field research was utilized in our area of study by means of primary data gathering through interviews, questionnaire and photographic register. Secondary data gathering was also obtained by means of bibliographical and documental research related to our study object. By these means, it was sought to contribute to the understanding of the urban space through its production and reproduction based upon the discovery of social and spatial practices / O presente trabalho versa sobre a (re)produ??o do espa?o urbano de Nova Cruz-RN, objetivando analisar as implica??es socioespaciais oriundas da realoca??o da principal feira livre da cidade a partir do ano de 1991. A cidade de Nova Cruz, atualmente, assume import?ncia no cen?rio socioespacial potiguar devido a sua condi??o de cidade central que ? exercida desde d?cadas na Microrregi?o Agreste Potiguar. A iniciar pelo seu processo de forma??o ligado a hospedaria de viajantes que transportavam gado, mais posteriormente pelo ?ureo momento de produ??o algodoeira em seu territ?rio, constatamos que sua import?ncia para com as cidades pr?ximas vem se dando de modo diferenciado ao longo do tempo. A partir do ano de 1991, a cidade de Nova Cruz passou por uma reconfigura??o territorial de seu espa?o urbano devido a realoca??o da feira livre da cidade do bairro Centro para o S?o Sebasti?o. Essa din?mica territorial resultou na (re)produ??o de seu espa?o urbano, promovendo ao mesmo tempo crescimento urbano e expans?o da atividade comercial, junto com a migra??o do centro comercial da cidade. Contudo, ao mesmo tempo em que a transfer?ncia da feira desencadeou esses processos atrav?s de novos usos do solo na dire??o do bairro S?o Sebasti?o, provocou tamb?m a desvaloriza??o econ?mica do bairro Centro, atrav?s da desativa??o de estabelecimentos comerciais, da perda de fun??es at? ent?o exercidas e da migra??o de moradores, estabelecendo um quadro de degrada??o espacial e socioecon?mica no bairro. Partindo desse contexto nossa an?lise busca entender os impactos socioespaciais ocorridos no bairro Centro, a forma como ocorreu a produ??o e reprodu??o do espa?o urbano no bairro S?o Sebasti?o e as implica??es da a??o do poder p?blico na reestrutura??o do espa?o urbano novacruzense. Para tanto, recorremos a pesquisa bibliogr?fica para a composi??o de nosso marco te?rico-conceitual, dialogando com autores como Roberto Lobato Corr?a, Ana Fani, Milton Santos, Manuel Castells e Heri Lefvbre, dentre outros, discutindo sobre a an?lise do urbano, a conceitua??o do espa?o urbano e o processo de (re)produ??o do espa?o urbano. Recorremos, tamb?m, ao desenvolvimento de uma pesquisa de campo em nossa ?rea de estudo, por meio da obten??o de dados prim?rios atrav?s de entrevistas, question?rios e registro fotogr?fico, al?m da obten??o de dados secund?rios por meio de pesquisa bibliogr?fica e documental acerca de nosso objeto de estudo. Desse modo buscamos colaborar para a compreens?o do espa?o urbano atrav?s de sua produ??o e reprodu??o fundamentadas no desvendamento das pr?ticas socioespaciais
