Although the duties of Artistic Directors of not-for-profit regional theatres in the United States are similar, the job description varies according to the management structure, mission of the theatre, and personal style of the individual holding the job. This thesis serves as a report and a subjective overview of an observership with Fred Chappell, Artistic Director of The Alliance Theatre Company/Atlanta Children's Theatre; David Head, Artistic Director of the Theatrical Outfit; and Frank Wittow, Artistic Director of The Academy Theatre. Each chapter contains: (1) a brief history and description of each theatre company; (2) the mission statement of each theatre; (3) biographical information regarding each Artistic Director; and (4) a subjective overview of the observation at each theatre. The Arkansaw Bear, a children's play by Aurand Harris, was first performed on March 20-29, 1980, by The University of Texas at Austin. On October 23-25, 1981, the play was produced at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, Virginia under the direction of Marie Wendt Zirkenbach. The author describes this production with a script analysis and a narrative of how the production evolved. A diary on the actual directing process used, an annotated prompt script, evaluation, production photos, production ground plans, and various relevant materials are included. Error Analysis of Angle and Range Estimation in a Range Limited Antenna System Using Music and Modified Root Pisarenko Algorithms

The Range Limited Antenna (RLA) has the ability to track and pin-point RF devices operating within a certain accepted range. Using two antenna arrays, each made up of several elements, direction-finding algorithms such as MUSIC and Modified Root Pisarenko (MRP) are used to estimate the angles of arrival of incoming signals. Using the estimated angles of arrival, a range estimation algorithm is used to estimate the distance of the emitter from the antenna array. The aim of this thesis is to check the sensitivity of the range estimation and to form a statistical analysis for such conditions. Conditions of error are introduced into the system and several extensive Monte Carlo simulations are run for both MUSIC and MRP. Upon simulating physical errors in the antenna set-up, it is realized that the range estimation algorithm is sensitive to the slightest of phase shift differences, cable loss differences, mixer mismatches, and antenna mismatches. / Master of Science

Direction of arrival estimation using antenna arrays

The objective of this thesis is to design, build and evaluate a direction-of-arrival measurement system using an antenna array operating at 2050 MHz. The first phase of the project is an extensive study of various high resolution DOA estimation algorithms. The algorithms studied include subspace-based techniques such as the MUSIC (MUltiple Signal Classification) and ESPRIT (Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance) algorithm, and the integrated approaches which combine property restoral-based techniques such as the Iterative Least Squares Projection-based Constant Modulus Algorithm (lLSP-CMA) with subspace-based techniques. All these algorithms were simulated in MATLAB and their performance under different conditions were tested and compared. In the second phase of the project a six element uniformly spaced linear array receiver was built. Three Ariel DSP-96 boards based on the Motorola DSP96002 are used to simultaneously sample, collect, and store data from each of the array elements. The data collected by the DSP boards are processed off-line to estimate the directions of arrival. Several experiments are conducted to test the functioning of the system under various conditions, and demonstrate the performance of different algorithms. Evaluation of Joint AOA and DOA Estimation Algorithms Using the Antenna Array Systems

We have created an eight-element antenna array system for evaluating various Angle of Arrival (AOA) Position Location (PL) algorithms, such as MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC) and Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance Techniques ESPRIT algorithms. Since using delay of arrival information can improve AOA estimates and classical PL algorithms do not incorporate Delay of Arrival (DOA) information, the performance of these algorithms is not optimal. Recently proposed Joint AOA and DOA Estimation (JADE) algorithms, though more complicated, potentially have higher resolutions in both space and time domains. Our investigation shows that by using bandlimited known signals it is possible to resolve the DOA within a fraction of the sample period using JADE algorithms. Joint AOA and DOA algorithms can provide high resolution DSP-based channel measurement using low bandwidth hardware. / Master of Science

Dynamic allocation of operators in a hybrid human-machine 4.0 context

La transformation numérique et le mouvement « industrie 4.0 » reposent sur des concepts tels que l'intégration et l'interconnexion des systèmes utilisant des données en temps réel. Dans le secteur manufacturier, un nouveau paradigme d'allocation dynamique des ressources humaines devient alors possible. Plutôt qu'une allocation statique des opérateurs aux machines, nous proposons d'affecter directement les opérateurs aux différentes tâches qui nécessitent encore une intervention humaine dans une usine majoritairement automatisée. Nous montrons les avantages de ce nouveau paradigme avec des expériences réalisées à l'aide d'un modèle de simulation à événements discrets. Un modèle d'optimisation qui utilise des données industrielles en temps réel et produit une allocation optimale des tâches est également développé. Nous montrons que l'allocation dynamique des ressources humaines est plus performante qu'une allocation statique. L'allocation dynamique permet une augmentation de 30% de la quantité de pièces produites durant une semaine de production. De plus, le modèle d'optimisation utilisé dans le cadre de l'approche d'allocation dynamique mène à des plans de production horaire qui réduisent les retards de production causés par les opérateurs de 76 % par rapport à l'approche d'allocation statique. Le design d'un système pour l'implantation de ce projet de nature 4.0 utilisant des données en temps réel dans le secteur manufacturier est proposé. / The Industry 4.0 movement is based on concepts such as the integration and interconnexion of systems using real-time data. In the manufacturing sector, a new dynamic allocation paradigm of human resources then becomes possible. Instead of a static allocation of operators to machines, we propose to allocate the operators directly to the different tasks that still require human intervention in a mostly automated factory. We show the benefits of this new paradigm with experiments performed on a discrete-event simulation model based on an industrial partner's system. An optimization model that uses real-time industrial data and produces an optimal task allocation plan that can be used in real time is also developed. We show that the dynamic allocation of human resources outperforms a static allocation, even with standard operator training levels. With discrete-event simulation, we show that dynamic allocation leads to a 30% increase in the quantity of parts produced. Additionally, the optimization model used under the dynamic allocation approach produces hourly production plans that decrease production delays caused by human operators by up to 76% compared to the static allocation approach. An implementation system for this 4.0 project using real-time data in the manufacturing sector is furthermore proposed.

No / In this research work the improvement of AOA estimation accuracy by applying a decoupling matrix derived using the receiving mode approach has been investigated using data measured in an anechoic chamber. The receiver was a 4-element uniform circular array with quarter wavelength inter-element spacing deployed on a square metal plate. The performance of the angle of arrival estimation error has been observed for two groups of direction finding algorithms, namely phase comparison-based (interferometry) and covariance-based algorithms. Mutual coupling compensation on AOA was found to improve accuracy by approximately 50%.
