O discurso sobre a morte em arquivos institucionais do final do século XIX / Discourse about death in institutional archives from the end of the XIX centuryPedrazzi, Fernanda Kieling 14 December 2015 (has links)
This study aimed to investigate discourse about death in institutional archives
(re)visited to collect sources of research. The theoretical question revolves around
discourse about . Theories and concepts from the area Linguistics, Letters and
Arts and basic area Linguistics make up the theoretical basis, with an emphasis on
the French School of Discourse Analysis. The area of Applied Social Sciences ,
basic area Information Sciences, is also contemplated in order to account for issues
of archiving and information. Springing from these disparate fields, Archiving and
Discourse Analysis, we attempted to read and analyze the selected materiality, by
creating a temporal and chronological framework, with a focus on the city of Santa
Maria, RS, and taking the year 1896 as a reference for the deaths. Data collected
consisted of: 1) death certificates produced/received by the Municipal Intendance
and kept at the Municipal Historical Archive of Santa Maria; 2) death records
recorded at the Cathedral and kept in the archdiocese archive; and 3) death records
made at the Registry Office. Two hundred and seventy-five reports of death were
found for 1896, with the Municipal Intendance of Santa Maria (167), having the
greatest number, followed by the catholic cathedral (64) and, finally, the Registry
Office of Santa Maria (44). A comparison among the three sets was performed, to
obtain a total of 197 names of different people. The names of the deceased with
reports common to all three entities made up the empirical corpus (12 deaths and
respective reports). The study considered death notices, news articles and personal
accounts or tributes published in the newspaper regarding these deaths extracted
from a local newspaper that circulated during the year studied, as well as a postmortem
inventory, the only one of its kind found, which made part of the Public
Archive of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. Using discourse analysis, extracts from
the discursive field were used to demonstrate the five domains of discourse about
death, elected from their incidence: medical, religious, judicial, journalistic and private
discourse, proposed in this dissertation as a new category. Discursive sequences
that made up the corpus were analyzed within these discourses about death. The
perception of the meaning of words within language use and the relation between
historicity and discourse are constants in the corpus.
A questão teórica
A partir do conhecimento
enquadramento temporal e cronológico, privilegiando Santa Maria, RS, e tendo 1896

The objective of this thesis in discourse analysis is a critical and comparative analysis of discourses about breastfeeding in two different ethnolinguistic communities: France and Germany. The original research question is: is the option of breastfeeding a real choice or do women follow the path lined up by authors ? We gathered a corpus composed of institutional booklets and parent's manuals. In our research, we have considered how the authors of these guides and booklets are positioning themselves in their discourses and the arguments put forward to convince women to breastfeed. The study of milk and breastfeeding characterizations in our corpus of French and German texts has allowed us to show that these authors leave little opportunity to choosing breastfeeding, even if this lack of choice is translated in a different way in the two ethnolinguistic communities studied.

[en] THE READING CLASSES EXPERIENCE: CONCEPTIONS AND PRACTICES / [pt] SALAS DE LEITURA: CONCEPÇÕES E PRÁTICASLEDA MARIA DA FONSECA 02 July 2004 (has links)
analisar as atividades realizadas nesses espaços,
importantes referenciais. / [en] This study focus The Reading Class experience of the public
schools in Rio de Janeiro city. Its main objective is to
analyze the activities that take held in those schools,
chiefly, the practices instituted with the literary
text. In order to sign the historical context of the
reading classes I have analyzed the official documents that
regularize the program since its implementation. So I have
verified that the reading classes would not be anymore
privileged spaces for the reading practices of literary
texts, as they were in the origin, to be nowadays
multimedia spaces. Besides the documental analyses, I have
observed two reading classes and I have made a lot of
interviews with teachers and students of those schools.
With the field research, I could verify that there are
different conceptions and expectations concern the program.
I understand this kind of search under a socio-historical
perspective, where Mikhail Bakhtin's ideas are important
statements.

O discurso sobre o livro didático de inglês: a construção da verdade na sociedade de controle / The discourse about the English textbook: the construction of truth in the society of controlBraga, Maria Dolores Wirts 25 April 2014 (has links)
Our aim to investigate the discourse about the English textbook inevitably touches on the issue of the textbook as a discourse of truth. Driven by the hypothesis that the power of discourse of truth, often attributed to the textbook, is built by the discourse which speaks about the textbook, our research aims to study the functioning mode and the effects of that discourse which we name discourse about the English textbook. Although English textbooks have been adopted in some courses by some public school teachers here and there, this is the first time that the Brazilian federal government has proposed the nation-wide adoption of foreign language textbooks (English and/or Spanish) through the National Textbook Program for the year of 2011 (PNLD 2011) by selecting titles for teachers to choose from and by bearing all the expenses involved in the process. Our research follows the conceptualization of Discourse Analysis as established by Michel Pêcheux. Those concepts guide the analysis of the excerpts in our research corpus, which is composed of three segments. The official discourse segment contains excerpts from the most relevant documents issued by the government on the PNLD 2011. The media discourse segment comprises online news and articles issued by governmental as well as non-governmental news agencies and by schools and associations sites. The professional discourse segment holds the answers provided by public school teachers of English (6th to 9th grades) to two questionnaires on the adoption of the English textbook. Their answers were collected in two distinct moments. The first questionnaire was answered by the teachers before textbook collections were pre-selected to integrate the PNLD 2011. The second questionnaire was answered by teachers who already used the PNLD 2011 textbooks. The analysis of the discourse about the English textbook led us to the perception of effects which confirm the functioning of the English textbook as a discourse of truth since it is represented as such by the discourse about it. Through discourse analysis, we have also observed effects which are typical of the functioning mode of societies of control, as briefly defined by Michel Foucault ([1979] 2004) and further contended by Gilles Deleuze ([1990] 1992). In the interdiscourse axis, modulating principles were observed in enouncements, as they ensure limitless postponements, demand continuous updating, motivate the individual and ensure control. In the intradiscourse axis, the linguistic materiality often presented excerpts marked by modalization, which softens the remarks and gives rise to multiple possibilities. The effects observed seem to work as modulating principles, as formulated by Deleuze ([1990] 1992), which confirms that the relationship between power and knowledge is already functioning in the modes of societies of control

This research study aims to analyze the doctoral theses produced on graduate programs in education, in the period of 2000-2010, about education and its relation to ethnic and racial issues, in order to realize potential directions coming from the statements of these theses. A part on the assumption that since the enactment of Law 10.639 / 03, which made compulsory the teaching of African History and Culture and African-Brazilian in basic education schools, the interest in the topic in graduate programs showed a considerable increase, however it concerns us understand how these works are being built since the construction of knowledge comes from a tensioning field that is the gym. Thus, the relationship between knowledge and power is present and establishes epistemological barriers that formed along the Brazilian history. The research is based on theoretical assumptions of the Bakhtin Circle, especially in the design of dialogism, for the discourses of these theses can only be understood when seized from the subject-author interaction, statement and socio historical conditions. The results of this investigative action demonstrate how the epistemological ruptures are difficult to make changes in beliefs, values and automatically, in pedagogical practices. The analyzed theses refer to this difficulty and become spokesmen of a fight initiated by social movements throughout Brazilian history and remains alive today. The discourses of these thesis have proved, in addition to scientific texts, true manifestos in favor of a society in which racial equality is a true premise.

Encouragement, Enticement, and/or Deterrent: A Case Study Exploring Female Experience in a Vocational Education (VET) Initiative in Northern EnglandParris, Sandra A. 05 November 2013 (has links)
This case study examined how a group of young girls at a secondary school in northern England made sense of their participation in a gender specific vocational education initiative designed to encourage female interest in skilled trade education and professions. The investigation consists of a qualitative case study that included ‘practical’ and historical components. On the practical side, the study looked at a gender specific initiative (girls only) aimed at Year 9 students (12-14 years old) at Garden Road Community and Technology School. The one-day sessions were held at local area colleges or vocational education and training (VET) training facilities and covered skilled trade fields that are traditionally male-dominated (e.g. automotive, construction and engineering). My methodology for the study consisted of two data sources, interviews and a review of public VET policy-related documents. The data was gathered using two methods, with individual and group interviews as the primary one, and public VET policy-related document analysis as the secondary one. In total, 13 current, 2 former and an additional 2 formerly registered (now graduates who decided to pursue non-traditional vocational education and professions) students at the school were interviewed. Beside former and current students, interviews were conducted with 2 instructors and 1 senior administrator at the school. The selection of government policy-related documents covered 2002 to 2011.
The study is framed by a feminist informed genealogy that invokes Foucault’s (1990) notion of ‘biopower’ and Pillow’s (2003) notion of the ‘gendered body.’ Meanwhile, Ted Aoki’s (2003) concepts of curriculum-as-plan and curricula-as-lived are used to analyze and discuss the review of UK government policy-related documents and participant narratives. The theme-based presentation of student narratives centred on the girls’ understanding and experience of: the session process and content; gender; non-traditional VET as educational and occupational options; and the impact of the sessions on their educational and professional choices.
The student narratives suggest several things that relate to their understanding of gender and non-traditional VET. First, the sessions proved to be both interesting and informative and students expressed an interest in taking part in more (and) varied gender-specific sessions. Second, traditional constructions of gender and gendered behavior are commonly used in job-related discourse as evidenced by the use of the terms ‘boys jobs’ and ‘girls jobs’ among the students. In addition, students had limited opportunities for exposure to non-traditional VET education and professions; and what knowledge they do have is generally dependent upon family knowledge and experience in the area. From a document review standpoint, the findings show that government commitment in terms of interest and financial backing for VET has been inconsistent. Resultantly, schools are left to identify and maintain a range of community-based partnerships that may not always see gender segregation in VET as a major concern.
The significance of this study rests in the presentation of the girls’ ‘lived curriculum’ and ‘gendered’ experiences as points that can offer insight into what transpires within vocational education initiatives and settings. Furthermore, from a feminist perspective the research also highlights the continued need to work with schools on how gender is presented, discussed and understood among students. Failure to consider the gendered nature of discourse about education and professional options that takes place within school and class settings limits students’ perspectives about what is available and possible.
