Territoriality and Behaviour On and Around Large Vertical Publicly-Shared Displays

Large displays and information kiosks are becoming increasingly common installations in public venues to provide an efficient self-serve means for patrons to access information and/or services. They have evolved over a relatively short period of time from non-digital, non-interactive static displays to more elaborate media-rich digital interactive systems. While the content and purposes of kiosks have changed, they are still largely based on the traditional single-user-driven design paradigm despite the fact that people often venture to these venues in small social groups, i.e., with family and/or friends. This often limits how groups collaborate and forces transactions to be serialized. This thesis explores design constraints for interaction by multiple social groups in parallel on shared large vertical displays. To better understand design requirements for these systems, this research is separated into two parts: a preliminary observational field study and a follow-up controlled study. Using an observational field study, fundamental patterns of how people use existing public displays are studied: their orientation, positioning, group identification, and behaviour within and between social groups just-before, during, and just-after usage. These results are then used to motivate a controlled experiment where two individuals or two pairs of individuals complete tasks concurrently on a low-fidelity large vertical display. Results from the studies demonstrate that vertical surface territories are similar to those found in horizontal tabletops in function, but their definitions and social conventions are different. In addition, the nature of use-while-standing systems results in more complex and dynamic physical territories around the display. We show that the anthropological notion of personal space must be slightly refined for application to vertical displays.

Towards the Development of User Interface Design Guidelines for Large Shared Displays

As large displays become more affordable, researchers investigate their productivity impacts and try to develop techniques for making the large display user experience more effective. Studies show that large displays enable users to create and manage more windows and engage in more complex multitasking behavior. Although recent work demonstrates significant productivity benefits of large shared displays, it shows numerous usability issues because current software design is not scaling well. Therefore, we took steps towards developing two user interface design guidelines for large shared displays. Specifically, empirical studies have been conducted to compare the effects of large shared display and personal display use. When each of them is used as a secondary display, large shared displays impose increased interruption and comprehension. Empirical and qualitative studies are designed to develop two user interface design guidelines for large shared displays. We designed a system called SuperTrack that uses a large shared display and the proposed guidelines to further enhance team efficiency and productivity in collaborative software development environments. Finally, an in-situ evaluation assesses the benefits of SuperTrack. Results show that exposing software development team members to a large shared display through SuperTrack leads to more communication among the members and improved group awareness — leading to increased productivity and efficiency. / Master of Science

Encoding of Streaming Peripheral Information in Video Games

Traditional peripheral displays rely on drawing the user's attention and gaze through alerts. These displays function best when the central task does not require the user's constant attention. For tasks that require a user to always maintain focus, alert-based displays are not appropriate. We assert that conveying information to a user without drawing his gaze, allows the user to maintain constant focus on his primary task while still receiving additional information. In this thesis we use video games to examine streaming peripheral displays as a means of presenting information without drawing gaze. The results of our experiments showed no significant difference between user performance using our display encoded for peripheral viewing versus an unencoded display. Additionally, we found that players were successfully able to perceive information shown on a streaming peripheral display, however, as game difficulty increased the effectiveness of the streaming peripheral display decreased. Finally, we show that as game level increases, users adopt risk-tolerant strategies. Drawing from these results, we have suggested some additional heuristics pertaining to streaming peripheral displays. Interaction Techniques using Head Mounted Displays and Handheld Devices for Outdoor Augmented Reality

Depending upon their nature, Outdoor AR applications can be deployed on head mounted displays (HMD) like Google glass or handheld Displays (HHD) like smartphones. This master’s thesis investigates novel gesture-based interaction techniques and applications for a HMD-HHD hybrid system that account for advantages presented by each platform. Prior research in HMD-HHD hybrid systems and gestures used in VR and surface computing were taken into account while designing the applications and interaction techniques. A prototype system combining a HMD and HHD was developed and four applications were created for the system. For evaluating the gestures, an application that compared four of the proposed gestures for selection tasks was developed. The results showed a significant difference between the different gestures and that the choice of gesture for selection tasks using a hybrid system depended upon application requirements like speed and accuracy.

Spatial History: Using Spatial Memory to Recall Information

Some computer users employ large displays, 6 or more monitors, in order to view a large amount of data on a single desktop at one time.  This layout can be useful when the user is performing tasks in which they must view several different information sources at a time.  For example, a user may be writing a paper in which they may be simultaneously typing a document, reading another paper, and view a spreadsheet.  After the task is completed, the user may close all of the windows, however sometime later they may want to view a document associated with that task.  A possible scenario is for the user to know that they were viewing an important document in their top left monitor, but they cannot remember which document.  SpatialHistory looks to allow a user to recall which windows and documents were open at a certain time spatially.  The user may query a particular region of a large display and SpatialHistory will report the windows that were open in that area.  Through a user study, we conclude that i) some users organize their large displays in a spatial manner placing certain types of documents and windows in certain places and that ii) our tool has the potential to help users recall previously viewed windows based on a spatial memory of their desktop. / Master of Science
