Selecting location for a retail business : Comparing shopping mall and down-town commercial district in Jönköping

Halaby, Peter, Kudryashova, Natalia January 2007 (has links)
<p>In every market, competition is a vital ingredient for any working market economy. Large stores like IKEA, OnOff and El-Giganten are often positioned in locations near each other. Shopping areas like Gekås have proven to have large attraction power towards the customers. In down-town shopping areas it is common that large stores take advantage of each other’s capabilities to invoke customers’ interest. By doing so, businesses work together to create a large customer base.</p><p>The purpose of this paper is to determine how owners and managers of medium sized retail stores should choose location for their shop.</p><p>Both a qualitative and quantitative approach were used in this thesis; the qualitative approach was used for conducting interviews with 6 people involved in running the stores and municipality. This was done to collect information from actors that had the experience and knowledge about the subject of the thesis. The quantitative approach involved a survey done upon shopping habits of consumers in the same area. The reason for conducting both these researches was to diminish the biased answers that we would have got from conducting the research from one group only. By asking the store managers/owner and customers, as well as a representative of the municipality, we were able to provide a complete perspective on the situation.</p><p>Our findings showed that there were some major differences between a down-town shopping area and a shopping mall. It also became clear that the preferences and capabilities of the stores were important for selecting locations. Consumer preference on where to go shop was showed to be almost the same for A6 and down-town with a slight advantage towards A6. Still, the requirements on opening a store in a shopping mall oppose down-town was different.</p>

School as a Center for Community: Establishing Neighborhood Identity through Public Space and Educational Facility

Goykhman, Fred 10 November 2008 (has links)
“Safety is an opportunity for people to open their minds” -Jin Baek, 2008 For my thesis I will design an education facility. That education facility will strive to meet with today's security needs and will provide a safe-feeling place for growth. In identifying the problem, I found two main causes for the described conditions in today's schools. They are improper adaptation and uniform building type. Improper adaptation has to do with surface applications, rather than integrating with the social fabric of the school's communal requirements. Unfortunate incidents have caused the solutions to heightened security around schools to be fortressing and disrupting to the human activities. Metal detectors, restricted areas and alarmed doors are some of the possibly necessary but often overlooked attributes of the school design, which in concentration create a trapping, prison-like feeling where they should suggest a place of voluntary education and inspiration for the future. I will utilize CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) strategies, research codes, new building technologies, materials, systems, arrangements, precedent studies, and testing through simulation or experiment, in a form of installation. I can determine possible solutions and interventions using these resources. Uniform building type sets a counterproductive precedent. Today we must look at places were young people want to be, and splice the desired attributes of those places in to modern schools. In fact, uniform building type is one of the reasons for improper adaptation. Through interviewing school administrators, building officials, students, faculty, psychologists, builders and other construction professionals, I can identify the mandatory requirements. Implementing security and safety attributes as part of the concept, and knowing trends in technology can help secure educational facilities while still maintaining the qualities that are conducive to a learning environment. As stated by Holly Richmond in Contract magazine, February 2006 edition, "Students are the most crucial design element in today's schools," says Kerry Leonard, principal and senior planner at O'Donnell, Wicklund, Pigozzi and Peterson Architects in Chicago and chair of the advisory group for the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education. "Understanding how people learn and creating environments that respond to this knowledge is the best building block to start from."

Arquitetura do espetáculo em cena / Architecture of the spetacle in scene

Pietraroia, Valerio Marcos Nogueira 27 March 2014 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation is to understand the architecture of the spectacle and its relation to artistic questions which have been posed since the 1920s. The recent scenario points to reconquering the city as territory for artistic manifestations, as the place of the spectacle. After discussing notional and methodological questions to study the theme, we analyze The Place of the Spectacle which is presented as a reflection about the means used so that such manifestations can perform their transforming role. The Metropolis in Scene describes the developments, since the 1950s, through several artistic manifestations of urban nature in which the city is not only scenario, but also argument, script and character. Therefore, this dissertation investigates the notions and manifestations of the architecture of the spectacle in this period and draws, particularly, a parallel to works produced by masters such as Walter Gropius, Eric Mendelsohn, Mies van der Rohe, Rino Levi, Lina Bo Bardi and Paulo Mendes da Rocha. Having urban centers as territory, specially São Paulo\'s city downtown area, project strategies and methodologies applied to the architecture of the spectacle as well as recent interventions in its built heritage are studied. The line of reasoning of our research is to identify essential values of the architecture of the spectacle which has been inspiring both architects, directors and theatrical thinkers.
