To those familiar with schools, it is quite obvious that there is a definite problem of dropouts, and that this is particularly acute with those whose ability and interest do not fit them for the average school curriculum. Slow learners that constitute a large part of the dropout group are forced at least up to the point of compulsory attendance age to come to school. Realizing that our whole economic system is geared to competition, schools sometime assume they are justified in adopting the squeeze-out system also. The writer of this study served as assistant principal and classroom teacher in the public schools for white children in Collins, Georgia, during the school tern of 1950-51. Occupying the dual position of carrying out certain delegated administrative responsibilities and teaching four classes daily afforded opportunity not only for recognizing the school's problems, but to get the viewpoints of the pupils toward the school. A study of the school records revealed that large numbers of pupils leave school before graduation, but there the record ends. It seeks to establish the extent to which entrepreneurial knowledge, skills and attitudes are being promoted ai school thus equipping learners for ihe world of business once they leave school. The study is undertaken ag~i the background of very high mte of unemployment currently facing South Africa. A nmnber of factors, such as high population growth, globalisation and a variety of other socio-political circlUllStance have resulted in the shrinkage of job opportunities in the formal sector of the economy. The unemployment problem mostly affects the rural schoolleavers, among other groups, in the community. Small bu.'$ine.<Js development is generally seen as the most promising solution to the unemployment problem. Preparing learners for entrepreneurship is therefore the most serious challenge facing schools today. The school is required to deliver the kind of education that will make it possible for learners to start and develop their own businesses once they leave school. Hence the quest for education that is relevant to the needs and aspirations of society. A qualitative study undertaken with rural schoolleavers who own small businesses reveals that the school has not yet taken delibemte steps to tester entrepreneurship among learners thus preparing them for self-employment when they leave school. Again it bas been demonstrated that schools have great potential to inculcate entrepreneurial knowledge, attitudes and skills once they can start working in close co-operation with the community. The influence of background characteristics on dropouts from a Job Corps Center was investigated using a Biographical Information Blank. Successful and unsuccessful male and female volunteer Corpsmembers were compared and the data analyzed by univariate and multivariate statistical techniques. Results strongly support the prediction that biographical characteristics are important in determining Corpsmember failure in the program. It was also found that the nature of family and peer relationships; previous social adjustment and structured activity and factors related to ethnicity and cultural attitudes are influential. There are also indications that potential dropouts may be affected in a positive manner to complete their training.

The purpose of this project was to design a year long course curriculum in educational development. The curriculum will serve the educational needs of many Mexican-American high school students who academically need it.

This research was a reanalysis of an extant data set on a Youth Employment Demonstration Projects Act (YEDPA) summer program. The ten week, seven site program combined classroom training with a worksite experience and was targeted to drop-outs, potential drop—outs and adjudicated youth. Eligible youth were randomly assigned to participant and control groups and were measured at pre— and postprogram and three and eight month follow-up. The data set included information on 1901 participant and 978 control youth.
