Fluorescence and elastic scattering from laser dye-filled capillaries

We investigated the elastic scattering and fluorescence from laser dye solutions inside 5000, 1100, and 96.5 micron inner-diameter hollow-core capillaries. Incident 4416 A laser illumination of Coumarin 7 dye dissolved in ethanol caused fluorescence from approximately 4600 to 6000 A. This was studied over an angular range from 0° to 360°. A light scattering nephelometer coupled with a spectrometer gave intensity measurements as functions of wavelength (at fixed detection angles) and angle (at fixed wavelengths), while the illumination source, dye-filled capillary, and detector remained stationary. We saw capillary size and detection-angle dependence of the fluorescence and elastic scattering. Results show that angular variations of the elastic scattering and emitted fluorescence can be used to determine an optimum detection angle from the capillary with respect to the incident illumination direction. This work is important in the design and execution of Capillary Zone Electrophoresis (CZE) experiments.

The design and construction of a flashlamp-pumped frequency-doubled dye laser applicable to long path monitoring of air pollutants

The subject of this thesis is the development of a laser light source which could be used in an air pollution monitor to measure the average concentration of sulfur dioxide gas over long paths (>1 km). Many of the problems encountered in designing a long-path pollutant monitor such as instrument cost and reliability, the selection of an optimum spectral region for making the measurement, and light losses due to scattering and turbulence, are considered. The result of these considerations together with a survey of available laser light sources suggested that a frequency- doubled dye laser possessed several advantages over other laser light sources.

The receiving system of a dual dye LIDAR to study molecular and aerosol densities at the base of the stratosphere

The operating principles and design of an optical receiver for a Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) remote sensing instrument are addressed. The performance and limitations of a biaxial monostatic LIDAR system utilizing this design are investigated. The complete optical and structural design of the receiver, including specifications of components are outlined. The thermal stabilization of the detector assembly and the integration of control electronics are described. A detailed discussion of alignment procedures and possible improvements are made. A sample observation is presented with suggestions for fully automating the system.

The concern of this dissertation is the understanding and improvement of a class of lasers that is responsible for some of the shortest optical pulses available today. In particular, we seek ways to produce from synchronously pumped mode-locked dye laser systems, shorter pulses of higher intensity with improved pulse-to-pulse consistency. Specific topics.that are discussed herein include the study of the role of the pump pulse in synchronously pumped mode-locked lasers, the study of the pulse shaping and shortening due to an intracavity saturable absorber, and the study of a fundamental pulse train instability associated with these lasers.
