The introduction of colored radicals into organic molecules.

Gentry, Willard Max January 1951 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The principal purpose of this investigation was to devise a means whereby natural or synthetic fibers might be dyed by the formation of ether, ester, or amide linkages. By so doing, the dyeing process would result in a very fast coloration unaffected by washing. For the purposes of preparing a colored ether of natural fibers, reactions wit h cellulose were tried with p-bromonitrosobenzene . It was hoped that this would give a p-nitrosophenyl ether of cellulose. This compound might itself be colored; but more important, it could be coupled with a variety of amines to give azo compounds. The compound p- br omonitrosobenzene, was chosen as the reagent for accomplishing this etherification, because it was the simplest, readily available nitrosocompound with a halogen group that could react fairly easily with cellulose. Attempts to prepare such a cellulose ether failed. The use of soda cellulose, or cellulose dissolved in benzyltrimethylammonium hydroxide, in a manner analogous to normal cellulose etherification reactions, resulted in failures. Rather than reacting with the cellulose, the nitroso compound decomposed rapidly to give p,p 1-dlbromoazoxybenzene in high yield. [TRUNCATED]

The bleaching mechanisms of some aromatic peroxoacids

Ryalls, C. R. January 1979 (has links)
This thesis consists of a study of the reactions of certain organic peroxoacids with certain model stain molecules. The peroxoacids in question were peroxobenzoic and monoperoxophthalic acid. The model compounds were; methyl orange, methyl red, flavone, alizarin, salicylaldoxime and salicylaldehyde. A brief study was also made of the reactions of peroxobenzoic acid with; para-vinylbenzoic acid, sorbic acid, cinnamic acid, ethanol and acetaldehyde. Rate versus pH plots were developed and, where possible, reaction products were identified and mechanisms suggested. In some cases activation parameters were measured. The possibility of transition metal ion catalysis was investigated in most cases.

Some dyes and intermediates from vanillin

Cochrane, James Alton January 1947 (has links)
An attempt was made to synthesize dyes of the triphenylmethane series, with vanillin as a starting material. Using conventional methods of dye preparation, several brilliant dyes were obtained, but only one of these was finally crystallized. A new method of triphenylmethane preparation was partially investigated. This consisted of condensing 3 methoxy 4 benzoyl benzal chloride, a new derivative of vanillin, with aryl compounds containing auxochrome groups. / Science, Faculty of / Chemistry, Department of / Graduate

Control of color in dyed paper

Bond, Tracy January 1988 (has links)
This paper will examine and evaluate via computer simulations different methods, both adaptive and non-adaptive, for the feedback control of the color of dyed paper. The objectives are to maintain the paper color at a desired setpoint despite disturbances such as addition of recycled dyed paper (i.e. broke), and to perform color changes as smoothly as possible. The dynamics of a three dye system are multivariable and nonlinear with a significant transport time delay: thus the incentive for adaptive control. Several predictor-based and Dahlin controllers with gain scheduling are designed, tested in simulation, and compared. Adaptive versions using parameters identified with Recursive Least Squares (RLS) are also tested. For practical applications, the non-adaptive Dahlin algorithm with gain scheduling is shown to offer the best performance, together with relative ease of use. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Electrical and Computer Engineering, Department of / Graduate
