TITLE: STANDARDIZED SUB-SCALE DYNAMOMETER SCALING METHOD FOR TRANSIT AND FREIGHT TRAIN APPLICATIONS MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Peter Filip Dynamometers are machines that are used in several industries for measuring force, torque, or power of a mechanism. These devices are in fact very useful in the friction material industry. Friction materials are created and then tested on dynamometers to analyze physical properties such as the dynamic coefficient of friction of the material based upon its retarding force against the wheel or disc, which is mounted to the dynamometer drive shaft. Dynamometer testing is expensive and often time consuming. Sub-scale dynamometers may be used to reduce cost, time, and material use while providing similar test results by implementing a proper scaling method. There are several scaling methods, but this approach will use surface analysis and the energy dispersed per surface contact area strategy to verify the testing conditions of both sub-scale and full scale testing. Since lab analysis costs are expensive, the project budget is restricted to analyzing the maximum of 1 full-scale disc and pad specimen and 2 subscale disc and pad sets. The test results are expected to prove that when the surface conditions of the analyzed specimens agree to each other, the dynamometer test results will also agree. Due to restrictions with budget and time the fastest and most effective way to test this hypothesis is by creating the baseline on the full-scale and then adjusting the scaling on the subscale dynamometer until similar results are given. Once similar dynamometer test results are obtained, the material specimens can be analyzed in the lab. Testing will continue as long as necessary, and if the expected results are not obtained, the results will still be tested for analysis and compared to the baseline. The results are expected to show that two separate machines may provide similar surface conditions for testing, as well as similar dynamometer test results for any given friction material. However, if the expected results cannot be obtained, then it may still prove that without matching the surface layer conditions while testing, the dynamometers recorded test results will not match either, which is in agreeance with the hypothesis.

Foi idealizada uma Estação de Medição de Força para avaliar a força muscular dos membros superiores a partir de contrações isométricas na direção vertical (flexão) e horizontal (rotação) contendo transdutores, condicionador de sinais e placa de aquisição de dados e, por fim, um computador. Após a construção e calibração do dispositivo, foi realizado um estudo comparativo da força muscular. Participaram do estudo 22 sujeitos do sexo masculino, com idade de 18 e 19 anos, militares, massa corpórea entre 57,7 e 93 kg (71,8 ± 9,45 kg) e com estatura entre 1,67 e 1,90 m (1,75 ± 0,06 m), saudáveis e sem história clínica de patologia ortopédica ou qualquer tipo de lesão no sistema músculoesquelético. Foram aplicados 3 testes de força: Flexão (sentido vertical), Rotação Interna e Rotação Externa (sentido horizontal). Para cada tipo de esforço foram solicitadas 3 (três) contrações voluntárias máximas por 10 segundos, com intervalo de 30 segundos entre cada contração. Através da análise comparativa dos dados, foi observada semelhança estatística entre as forças geradas pelo membro superior direito e esquerdo. Conclui-se que o dispositivo construído e testado apresenta inúmeras possibilidades para a análise biomecânica. / The aim of this study were the development of a device capable of measuring the muscle strength generated by the muscles of the upper limb and verification of efficiency and adaptability of this device through a comparative study of muscle strength in healthy subjects. It was an idealized Measurement of Force Station, to measure the muscular strength of senior members from isometric contractions in vertical direction (flexion) and horizontal (rotation) containing transducers, signal conditioning and data acquisition card and, finally, a computer. After the construction and calibration of the device it was made a comparative study of muscle strength. Twenty two make people participated in this study , were male, aged 18 and 19 years, military, body mass between 57.7 and 93 kg (71.8 ± 9.45 kg) and height between 1.67 and 1.90 m (1.75 ± 0.06 m), and healthy with no history of clinical orthopedic pathology or any kind of damage to the musculo-skeletal system. It was applied 3 tests of strength: Flexion (vertical direction), internal rotation and lateral rotation (horizontal direction). For each type of effort were required three (3) maximum voluntary contractions for 10 seconds, with an interval of 30 seconds between each contraction. Through analysis of comparative data, was observed statistical similarity between the forces generated by the upper right and left limbs. It was concluded that the device built and tested presents many possibilities for biomechanical analysis.
