Study of multi-component fuel premixed combustion using direct numerical simulation

Fossil fuel reserves are projected to be decreasing, and emission regulations are becoming more stringent due to increasing atmospheric pollution. Alternative fuels for power generation in industrial gas turbines are thus required able to meet the above demands. Examples of such fuels are synthetic gas, blast furnace gas and coke oven gas. A common characteristic of these fuels is that they are multi-component fuels, whose composition varies greatly depending on their production process. This implies that their combustion characteristics will also vary significantly. Thus, accurate and yet flexible enough combustion sub-models are required for such fuels, which are used during the design stage, to ensure optimum performance during practical operating conditions. Most combustion sub-model development and validation is based on Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) studies. DNS however is computationally expensive. This, has so far limited DNS to single-component fuels such as methane and hydrogen. Furthermore, the majority of DNS conducted to date used one-step chemistry in 3D, and skeletal chemistry in 2D only. The need for 3D DNS using skeletal chemistry is thus apparent. In this study, an accurate reduced chemical mechanism suitable for multi-component fuel-air combustion is developed from a skeletal mechanism. Three-dimensional DNS of a freely propagating turbulent premixed flame is then conducted using both mechanisms to shed some light into the flame structure and turbulence-scalar interaction of such multi-component fuel flames. It is found that for the multi-component fuel flame heat is released over a wider temperature range contrary to a methane flame. This, results from the presence of individual species reactions zones which do not all overlap. The performance of the reduced mechanism is also validated using the DNS data. Results suggest it to be a good substitute of the skeletal mechanism, resulting in significant time and memory savings. The flame markers commonly used to visualize heat release rate in laser diagnostics are found to be inadequate for the multi-component fuel flame, and alternative markers are proposed. Finally, some popular mean reaction rate closures are tested for the multi-component fuel flame. Significant differences are observed between the models’ performance at the highest turbulence level considered in this study. These arise from the chemical complexity of the fuel, and further parametric studies using skeletal chemistry DNS would be useful for the refinement of the models.

La prévision quantitative des précipitations à l’aide des modèles météorologiques reste encore un grand défi posé à la communauté des sciences atmosphériques. En effet, deux problèmes majeurs sont généralement identifiés pour la prévision opérationnelle des précipitations et du climat : les interactions des systèmes précipitants avec le relief et avec la pollution. Cette thèse contribue à l’amélioration des prévisions de pluies. La stratégie adoptée est d’étudier des évènements précipitants en zones montagneuses en décrivant au mieux les interactions aérosol-nuage-précipitation à l’aide du modèle à microphysique mixte détaillée : DEtailed SCAvenging Model (DESCAM, Flossmann et Wobrock (2010)). Ce modèle utilise cinq distributions pour représenter les particules d’aérosol résiduelles et interstitielles ainsi que les gouttes et cristaux de glace. Le modèle a directement été comparé aux observations réalisées au cours de la campagne expérimentale COPS (Convective and Orographically induced Precipitation Study), qui a eu lieu pendant l’été 2007 à la frontière franco-allemande. En particulier, les simulations des pluies ont été comparées avec des observations de différents radars afin d’évaluer les performances du modèle mais aussi d’aider à l’interprétation des réflectivités de la bande brillante. La sensibilité par rapport à la pollution particulaire a été étudiée pour les propriétés des nuages et des précipitations. Pour les cas étudiés, plus le nombre des particules d’aérosol présentes dans l’atmosphère est important et plus leur solubilité est élevée, plus les précipitations au sol sont faibles. Ces comportements globaux peuvent toutefois être localement différents. Il existe donc des interactions plus complexes entre les particules d’aérosol, les nuages et les précipitations qui doivent être encore plus approfondies. / The quantitative precipitation forecast is still an important challenge for the atmospheric community. Indeed, two main problems are generally identified for weather and climate models : the interactions of the cloud systems with the topography and with pollution. This work contributes towards the improvement of the precipitation forecasts. The strategy used was to study the convective system over an area with a complex topography using the detailed microphysics scheme DEtailed SCAvenging Model (DESCAM, Flossmann and Wobrock (2010)) to better describe the aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions. This microphysical scheme follows the evolution of the aerosol particle, drop and ice crystal distributions. Aerosol mass in drops and ice crystals is predicted by two distributions functions in order to close the aerosol budget. The model simulation results are compared with observations from COPS campaign (Convective and Orographically induced Precipitation Study), which took place at the French-German boarder during summer 2007. Rain simulations were compared with available radar data to evaluate the model’s performances and help the interpretation of the radar reflectivity in the bright band level. Sensitivity with respect to the particulate pollution was studied for in-cloud and precipitation properties. For the cases studied, the higher the aerosol particle number in the atmosphere or the higher the solubility of the aerosol particles, the weakest are the precipitation at the ground. These global behaviours of precipitation on the ground could be locally different. Consequently, the aerosol-cloud-precipitation interactions are complex and more in-depth studies are necessary.

Robustness in fire of steel framed structures with realistic connections

Joints are the most critical elements in a steel framed structure. In most design guides or codes, the joints are assumed to a have higher fire resistance than the connected structural members because of the lower temperatures in the joints. However, in severe fire conditions, a connected beam's temperature may be higher than its limiting temperature and the beam may develop catenary action when the beam’s axial shortening from large deflections becomes greater than the beam’s thermal expansion. This beam catenary action force could fracture the joints, increasing the risk of progressive collapse. This research focuses on the interaction between joints and the connected steel beams and columns in steel framed structures in fire, including how the behaviour of a joint-beam assembly may be efficiently analyzed and how the joints may be constructed to achieve high degrees of catenary action. Three methods of simulating the joint behaviour in fire have been developed and implemented in the commercial finite element software ABAQUS. In the first modelling method, all structural members, including the connections, were simulated using detailed solid elements to enable detailed behaviour of the structure to be faithfully represented. In the second method, the columns were represented by conventional line (beam) elements, the joints were represented using springs (Connector Elements) based on the component based method, and the beam was modelled using solid elements. In the third method, the joints were modelled using springs as in the second method and the beam and columns were simulated using line (beam) elements. As expected, the detailed simulation method was extremely time-consuming, but was able to produce detailed and accurate results. The simulation results from the second and third methods contained some inaccuracies, but depending on the simulation objective, their simulation results may be acceptable. In particular, the third simulation method was very efficient, suitable for simulating complete frame structures under very large deflections in fire. The first method (detailed finite element method) was then used to investigate how to change the joint details to increase the survivability of restrained steel beams and beam-column assemblies at high temperatures since it enables detailed behaviour of the structure to be faithfully represented. It is found that by improving joint deformation capacity, in particular, using extended endplate connection with fire resistant bolts, very high temperatures can be resisted. The frame robustness in fire was investigated using the third simulation method to save computation time. The simulation structure was three-bay by three-floor and different scenarios of fire location, fire spread and initial structural damage were considered. The simulation results show that once failure of a column occurs, progressive collapse of the structure could be easily triggered and it would be rather futile to only enhance the joint capacity. Therefore, in addition to the measures of improving joint capacities (both rotation and strength), design of the affected columns should include consideration of the additional catenary forces from the connected beams and the increased effective lengths. Furthermore, the lateral bracing system should be ensured to provide the structure with lateral restraint.

Les carburants dérivés du pétrole constituent la première source mondiale énergétique et leur approvisionnement constitue un défi actuel majeur impliquant des enjeux économiques et environnementaux cruciaux. Une des voies les plus efficaces pour peser simultanément sur ces deux enjeux passe par la diminution de la consommation en carburant. La simulation numérique constitue dès lors un outil précieux pour améliorer et optimiser les moteurs et les carburants. Les modèles chimiques détaillés sont nécessaires pour comprendre les phénomènes d’auto-inflammation et caractériser la nature et les quantités de polluants émis. Ces modèles mettent en jeu un nombre très important d’espèces et de réactions élémentaires, pour une espèce donnée et pour lesquelles la détermination des données thermodynamiques et cinétiques est un problème crucial. La chimie quantique constitue un outil précieux permettant d’une part de déterminer de façon précise les données thermocinétiques pour bon nombre de systèmes chimiques et d’autre part de mieux comprendre la réactivité de ces systèmes. Dans ce travail, les réactions unimoléculaires de décomposition d’hydrocarbures monocycliques et polycycliques (amorçages, réactions moléculaires, ß-scissions, formations d’éthers cycliques) ont été étudiées à l’aide des méthodes de la chimie quantique. Un mécanisme détaillé de pyrolyse d’un alcane polycyclique a été développé à partir des données thermodynamiques et cinétiques et des corrélations entre structure et réactivité déterminées pour les cyclanes à partir des calculs quantiques. Les simulations effectuées à partir de ce modèle sont en très bon accord avec les résultats expérimentaux de la littérature / Petroleum fuels are the world’s most important primary energy source and the need to maintain their supply is a major actual challenge involving both economical and environmental features. Decreasing fuels consumption is one of the more efficient ways to reconcile the goals of energy price and environmental protection. Numerical simulations become therefore a very important tool to optimize fuels and motors. Detailed chemical kinetic models are required to reproduce the reactivity of fuels and to characterize the amount of emitted pollutants. Such models imply a very large number of chemical species and elementary reactions, for a given species, and the determination of thermodynamic and kinetic data is a critical problem. Nowadays, quantum chemistry methods are able to calculate accurately thermodynamic data for a large number of chemical systems and to elucidate the reactivity of these systems. In this work we have used quantum chemistry to study the unimolecular reactions (initiation, molecular reactions, ß-scissions, cyclic ethers formations) involved in the decomposition of monocyclic and polycyclic hydrocarbons. From the results of quantum chemical calculations, a detailed chemical kinetic mechanism of the pyrolysis of a polycyclic alkane has been developed and validated against experimental data

Le but du présent travail de thèse était d’examiner dans quelle mesure les programmes moteurs graphiques acquis au cours de l’apprentissage par écriture manuscrite contribuent au processus de reconnaissance. Précédemment, l’avantage de l’écriture manuscrite sur la dactylographie a été attribué à la contribution des programmes moteurs graphiques (Longcamp et al. 2010). Toutefois, les données recueillies dans le présent travail suggèrent que l’analyse visuelle détaillée requise par l’écriture manuscrite explique une grande partie de cet avantage. En effet, lorsque le symbole à reconnaître est présenté dans des conditions visuelles optimales, les apprentissages par écriture manuscrite et par composition – nécessitant tous les deux une analyse visuelle détaillée – aboutissent à un niveau de reconnaissance similaire et supérieur à celui faisant suite à la dactylographie. Ces résultats sont en accord avec la conception visuelle de la reconnaissance des lettres. Dans cette perspective, l’association entre la perception des lettres et l’activation motrice peut être interprétée comme la conséquence de l’apprentissage conjoint de la lecture et de l’écriture et non comme une condition nécessaire à l’encodage et à la reconnaissance.Toutefois, lorsque les conditions visuelles de présentation sont altérées, l’apprentissage par écriture manuscrite tend à aboutir à une meilleure reconnaissance que les apprentissages par composition et par dactylographie. Ces données suggèrent que les programmes moteurs graphiques pourraient contribuer à la reconnaissance lorsque les informations visuelles sont limitées et que la mémoire visuelle ne peut être utilisée de façon optimale. Notons que cette hypothèse mériterait d’être examinée de façon plus directe.Même si les résultats montrent une contribution importante de l’analyse visuelle détaillée dans l’avantage de l’écriture manuscrite sur la dactylographie, il convient de souligner que dans des conditions d’apprentissage naturelles, l’écriture manuscrite constitue le moyen le plus évident et spontané de promouvoir une telle analyse détaillée. Par ailleurs, pour que l’écriture manuscrite puisse aboutir à un encodage optimal, il est important que l’automaticité des mouvements d’écriture soit préservée. The master thesis focuses on checking the quality of a digitalised cadastral map in the cadastral district Křtěnov u Olešnice, which lays in Blansko district in South Moravian Region. Determined noticeable boundaries are compare with boundaries displayed in the cadastral map by several methods - graphically, in coordinates and on the basis of side measures. Historical maps and records of detailed measurement of changes were used to achieve the aim of the master thesis. It was completed by using VKM programme.

The subject of this work is survey mainly of perceptible borders and perimeters of buildings in the urban area of village Heroltice and comparing the collected data with the current cadastre map in the cadastral area pursuant to paragraph 13. and 15. of the annex to the regulation no. 357/2013 (cadastral regulation). The purpose is to detect possible inconsistency, to propose a specific solution, and to create a base for cadastral office Brno-venkov, which can be used for example to decide about the renewal of cadastral using new mapping and in negotiations with owners during detection of borders.

This thesis deals with the verification of quality of the cadastral map in digital form in the cadastral unit Křtěnov u Olešnice. The map was created after a renewal of the cadastre documentation by reprocessing in 2012. In the terrain there were measured as many detailed points as possible. These points were compared with the points in the cadastral map. Then the parcels with differences between the cadastral map and the actual state in the terrain were solved. The software VKM was used for processing.

The thesis deals with the assessment of the return on economic investment in passive house compared to the low-energy (standard) house. The thesis deals with the issue of passive house, development, conception and division of structural parts including used materials. Their advantages, disatvantages and possibilities of use in construction are briefly discussed. The main part of the thesis focuses on the economic return on investment in passive house. Based on a detailed calculation, the costs for two buildings in low-energy and passive standards are quantified here. The passive standard is achieved by various design modifications. All this is supported by software calculation of annual energy consumption. The return on such an investment is then determined in more ways from this balance sheet, taking into account the evolution of energy prices.
