A study of the factors determining the choice of exchange rate regime: with specific reference to China.Tang, Liang January 2007 (has links)

Since the 1980s China had different exchange rate regimes. For example, in 1981, a dual-exchange rate system was introduced, with the official exchange rate applying to non-trade-related foreign exchange transactions and the depreciated internal settlement rate (ISR) applying to trade related transactions. This system was discontinued in 1985, but after the establishment of special economic zones to boost the country&rsquo / s export performance, the dual-exchange rate system was reintroduced in 1986. In 1994 the country informed the IMF that it will be switching to a managed floating exchange rate system and this was the official policy for almost ten years. However, de facto, the country chose to peg its currency to the USD during all these years (whilst Japan was the most important trading partner).

The report provides a descriptive analytical overview of how China in this era of globalization and with the importance of the World Trade Agreement, managed to keep its currency pegged to the USD over such a long period of time. The most important factors explaining this choice were identified as the desire to stimulate export-let economic growth, the risk related to capital mobility, financial sector liberalization, relative price level stability, dollarization and politics.

The little man comedies of Charlie Drake and their relation to the unconsciousBannister, J. January 2013 (has links)
This thesis has two purposes: to examine the film and television ‘little man’ comedies of the British comic Charlie Drake in order to rescue him from the neglect that has masked his work, and to recover psycho-analysis as a viable critical methodological tool for understanding comedy. This thesis tests the applicability of psycho-analytic cultural theory to British Television and film comedy by using Drake’s work as a case history; given the scope of the thesis I also draw upon his work on dreams, the Oedipus complex, and castration anxiety as Freud’s work on jokes, humour and the comic was part of a triad of books that explores the trivial in the psychopathology of everyday life. The thesis adopts a psycho-analytic position because the ‘little man’ character(s) played by Drake render them amenable to a Freudian analysis. Much of the research material included in the thesis pertaining to Drake’s private life supports the argument that Drake’s ‘little man’ comedies and the ‘little man’ character he created are psycho-biographical. Similarly, audience research reports provide evidence that men’s appreciation of Drake’s comedies was different to women’s which explains why the psycho-sociological reception of his ‘little man’ character's popular appeal was predetermined.

The impact of HIV/AIDS on the economic efficiency of the South African manufacturing industry09 November 2010 (has links)
M.Comm. / The aim of this dissertation was to determine the economic impact of HIV/AIDS on the South African manufacturing industry. The research focused on the impact of HIV/AIDS on different efficiency categories, labour and production costs and competitiveness categories. The South African health sector, specifically the public health sector is under pressure in terms of funding, staff and infrastructure. This situation is putting pressure on the effective combat of HIV/AIDS in the country. The private health sector is more and more required to help to enhance the capacity of health services in South Africa. Firms are also required to make more health funding available to their employees and in some cases (such as the fight against HIV/AIDS) to supply health services within the organisation. HIV/AIDS is a serious illness that results in a situation where employees are not operating at their full potential. If left untreated it could have very negative impacts/effects not only for the employee but also for the efficiency and competitiveness of the firm. Firm are thus more and more forced on instituting effective HIV/AIDS programmes in the working place. The aim is to lessen the negative impact that HIV/AIDS might have on different efficiency levels, labour and production cost levels and on competitiveness in general. The results of the study indicated that HIV/AIDS have serious implications for firm-efficiency and firm-competitiveness. It was also learned from the results that bigger firms already have HIV/AIDS programmes in place in order to counter the negative impacts of HIV/AIDS in the working place.
