Shaping public opinion : an investigation of media framing of Trevor Manuel in 1996 and in 2007, in the Financial Mail

Mbunyuza, Lindani January 2011 (has links)
The discussion that follows seeks to critically examine the manner in which a South African financial publication, the Financial Mail (FM) magazine, reported on the country’s Finance Minister over two time periods. The specific time periods are April – June 1996, and February – April 2007. This will be done to assess whether the style of reporting changed over time. In order to accurately analyse the coverage, a content analysis of a number of articles published by the FM over two periods will be conducted. The first period to be examined correlates with Manuel’s first three months in office (April to June 1996) as finance minister, a role he took over after the resignation of then Finance Minister Chris Liebenberg, and the subsequent cabinet re-shuffle. This time period also coincides with the adoption of the internationally acclaimed South African constitution which pre-supposes, amongst others, freedom of the press. Manuel’s first three months in office furthermore coincided with the African National Congress’ (ANC) first period in government under the stewardship of President Nelson Mandela, having taken over power in 1994. The second time period selected is during Manuel’s 11th year in office (February to April 2007). The second time period coincides with a different economic and social situation, with the country’s economy having strengthened to the extent of recording a budget surplus. Relevant media theories and principles will be studied to evaluate which theories, if any, reflect the Financial Mail’s style of writing, language use and choice of stories to cover regarding Minister Manuel. An analysis of the first time period will include a look at the socio-economic conditions that prevailed at the respective times, against the background of the political situation during both periods. Dominant economic policies implemented and decisions taken during both periods relevant to the particular office Manuel held will be critically examined, since FM is a financial publication mostly covering financial and economic news. Research conducted will be qualitative in nature, and include an in-depth content analysis of articles.

Measuring Male Body Dissatisfaction: Factorial and Construct Validity of the Body Parts Satisfaction Scale for Men

McFarland, Michael Blaine 08 1900 (has links)
Given the centrality of body dissatisfaction in the manifestation of health risk behaviors (e.g., eating disorders, muscle dysmorphia) and psychological distress in men, the ability to measure it accurately is essential. Across two studies, the psychometric properties and factor structure of a new measure of male body satisfaction were established. The Body Parts Satisfaction Scale for Men (BPSS-M) was found to have three scores: full body muscularity and leanness (18 items), upper body (12 items), and legs (4 items). All three scores were internally and temporally reliable, and support was found for the convergent, discriminant, and concurrent validity of the scores. The BPSS-M represents an advance in the measurement of male body image, providing researchers and clinicians with a versatile and valid way to assess this important construct.

A session layer for the X.400 message handling system

Van der Westhuizen, Eugene Daniel January 1990 (has links)
Bibliography: pages 233-235. / The CCITT X.400 Message Handling System resides in the Application Layer of the seven-layer Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection. It bypasses the services of the Presentation Layer completely to interact directly with the Session Layer. The objectives of this thesis are to show how the general Session Layer may be tailored to be minimally conformant to the requirements of X. 400; to produce a formal specification of this session layer; and to show how this session layer may be implemented on a real system. The session services required by X. 400 are those of the Halfduplex, Minor Synchronization, Exceptions and Activity Management functional units of the CCITT X.215 Session Service Definition. These services, and particularly their use by X.400, are described in detail. State tables describing these services are derived from the general session service state tables. Those elements of the CCITT X. 225 Session Protocol Specification which are required to provide only those services required by X. 400 are described in detail. State tables describing this session protocol are derived from the general session protocol state tables. A formal specification of the session layer for X.400 is presented using the Formal Description Technique Estelle. This specification includes a complete session entity, which characterizes the entire session layer for X.400. A session entity for supporting X.400 is partially implemented and interfaced to an existing X.400 product on a real system. Only the Session Connection Establishment Phase of the session protocol is implemented to illustrate the technique whereby the entire session protocol may be implemented. This implementation uses the C programming language in the UNIX operating system environment.

Representation of China's Image on The Globe and Mail: A Corpus-Based Critical Discourse Analysis from the Perspective of van Dijk’s Ideology Square

Wang, Mengting 23 September 2021 (has links)
In early 2020, the outbreak of COVID-19 in Wuhan put China in the spotlight of international news. China’s development in the field of politics, society, and economics still occupies media attention in the context of the global public health crisis. Previous studies have shown that China’s image in the western media, including the Canadian media, adopted a generally negative tone. The objective of this thesis is to investigate China’s image in one of the mainstream Canadian media platforms, the Globe and Mail, during the whole epidemic year of 2020. This research is based upon news reports published in 2020 by the Globe and Mail and is conducted with the support of corpus linguistic methodology and with the guideline of Critical Discourse Analysis, especially van Dijk’s ideology square. In order to discern and identify the image of China as portrayed by the Globe and Mail, the underlying discourse strategies are analyzed. Findings show that “China”, “Chinese government”, and “Chinese citizens” are the main subjects that make up the broad concept of China’s image. And in China’s related news report in the Globe and Mail from 31 December 2019 to 31 December 2020, (1) rhetoric devices, including number game, news source selection, illustration, irony, implication, presumption, vagueness, comparison, and history as lesson, are employed to polarize the image of the Chinese government and the Canadian government. (2) China’s image in the Globe and Mail is generally negative, which can be described via four aspects: China as a threat, callous, dishonest/untrustworthy, and powerful (3) the China-related news as constructed by the Globe and Mail reflects its own particular national ideologies and interests.

Systém pro automatické vyhodnocení e-mailových zpráv / System for automatic evaluation of email messages

Frkal, Jan January 2014 (has links)
This diploma thesis deals with the design and realisation of system for automatic evaluation of e-mail messages. The system works with PHP language and MySQL database. It also allows automatic synchronisation. During the synchronisation e-mail messages are downloaded and saved using IMAP or POP3 protocol. Subsequently, the messages are analysed. During the analysis the reports are classified into types, according to pre-defined keywords. The system also works with black lists and white lists. If the sender of an e-mail is during the synchronisation found in the blacklist, that e-mail will be skipped. On the contrary, if the sender of an e-mail is found within the white list, that e-mail will be excluded from keyword matching and from the list is type and category loaded. Most of the values from the carried out evaluation of the e-mails can be clearly seen in advanced statistics. Pie charts and numerical statistics are available. Access to the system is protected by a login. Therefore, login can only registered users.

Rekonstrukce webmailového provozu / Webmail Traffic Reconstruction

Slivka, Miroslav January 2015 (has links)
Webmail applications are very popular these days. Besides typical usage, thanks to ciphered communication, they can be used for malicious activity like confidential data loss. This thesis discusses webmail events detection based on common webmail signatures in captured network traffic. Also there will be discussed SSL/TLS interception and decryption for further data analysis. The modules in this thesis are designed and implemented for Netfox.Framework forensics analysis tool. The Netfox project is developed at FIT BUT under security research project SEC6NET.
