The teaching of second level calculus at South African technikons : a didactical analysis of specific learning problems

This study was prompted by serious problems regarding specific teaching and learning problems in calculus at the technikon. The general aims were to identify and analyze particular teaching and learning problems relating to 2nd level engineering courses in calculus and to recommend improvements which could increase student performance in engineering calculus courses. An extensive study revealed world wide concern in calculus reform. The empirical research instruments consisted of structured questionnaires given to staff and students from nine technikons plus interviews. Five serious problem areas were identified: student ability in mathematics, content difficulty, background difficulties, timetable pressures and lecturer's presentation. The impact of training technology on calculus was investigated. Recommendations were that routine exercises can be done on computer with extra tutorial time for computer laboratory projects. Background recommendations suggested that schools give more time to trigonometry and coordinate geometry and that bridging courses at technikons for weaker students be developed. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. Usability evaluation of an e-learning tutorial using two evaluation methods

The use of interactive e-learning tutorials is an effective form of teaching and learning. It is therefore important that attention is paid to their usability. This research relates to the evaluation of a CD-based e-learning tutorial for learning Business English, with the aims of investigating its usability and identifying problems. Particular attention is paid to aspects that hinder the learner from achieving the learning objectives. The study uses two usability evaluation methods (UEMs), namely controlled usability testing in an HCI laboratory and a user questionnaire survey. The main aim of the study is to compare the findings and determine the impact of using two methods in combination. The first outcome of the research was a synthesized framework of evaluation criteria that was applied in the two UEMs. Secondly, findings of the evaluations indicated that two UEMs identified similar problems, thus confirming their reliability in usability evaluation. Another finding was instances where one method produced results not obtained by the other, which shows the complementary value of two different UEMs. A third benefit of the study was that it identified usability problems in the target system. / Information Systems / MA (Information Systems)

<p>There have been calls both from the government and private sector for Higher Education institutions to introduce programmes that produce employable graduates whilst at the same time contributing to the growing economy of the country by addressing the skills shortage. Transformation and intervention committees have since been introduced to follow the extent to which the challenges are being addressed (DOE, 1996 / 1997 / Luescher and Symes, 2003 / Forbes, 2007). Amongst the list of issues that needed urgent address were the skills shortage and underperformance of students particularly university entering students (Daniels, 2007 / De Klerk, 2006 / Cooper, 2001). Research particularly in the South African context, has revealed that contributing to the underperformance of university entering students and shortage of skills are: the legacy of apartheid (forcing certain racial groups to focus on selected areas such as teaching and nursing), the schooling system (resulting in university entering students to struggle), the home language and academic language. Barrell (1998), places stress on language as a contributing factor towards the performance of students. Although not much research has been done on skills shortage, most of the areas with skills shortage require Mathematics, either on a minimum or comprehensive scale. Students who have a strong Mathematics background have proved to perform better compared to students who have a limited or no Mathematics background at all in Grade 12 (Hahn, 1988 / Conners, McCown &amp / Roskos-Ewoldsen, 1998 / Nolan, 2002).The department of Statistics offers an Introductory Statistics (IS) course at first year level. Resources available to enhance student learning include: a problem-solving component with web-based tutorials and students attending lectures three hours per week. The course material and all the necessary information regarding the course including teach yourself problems, useful web-sites and links students can make use of, are all stored under the Knowledge- Environment for Web-based learning (KEWL). Despite all the available information, the students were not performing well and they were not interested in the course. The department regards statistical numeracy as a life skill. The desire of the department is to break down the fear of Statistics and to bring about a perspective change in students&rsquo / mindsets. The study was part of a contribution to ensuring that the department has the best first year students in Statistics in the Western Cape achieving a success rate comparable to the national norm.</p>

The thesis recounts the history of the village school of Velké Karlovice - Miloňov. The thesis is historical/empirical. The empirical part aims to use qualitative research to discover how the people of the region, the pupils of the school, perceived education in this hard, mountainous part of Wallachia. Their responses are compared to records of the Miloňov school chronicles. The historical part aims to present the results of a literary summary of the history of education in the Wallachia region and a comprehensive study of the history of the Miloňov Valley school. The thesis also covers the replica of the building of the Miloňov school built in the Wallachian Open Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. Included in the thesis is also an interview of the curator and expert guarantor responsible for the the construction of the museum replica. The replica building of the school in the Wallachian Open Air Museum offers a wide variety of educational programmes for schools. The appendix of the thesis includes a worksheet for first-graders that can be used as a part of the "Welcome to school" event in the Museum. The pass rate in mathematics is unsatisfactory both in South Africa and internationally. Historically disadvantaged students tend to underachieve even more due to a variety of hampering factors. An investigation into the reasons for underachievement in mathematics prompted the researcher to launch a study through which she wanted to remediate some of these identified problems. The research project took place at Technikon Northern Gauteng (TNG), and comprised of the implementation of tutorial sessions. The study was conducted by means of a quasi-experimental design using action research. The primary goal of this dissertation is to report on the process, outcomes and recommendations in order to facilitate improvement in practice. The researcher's overarching hypothesis was that tutorials in mathematics would have a positive effect on the achievement of first year mathematics students at TNG. The following questions were focussed on during the course of the study: ¨ What is the impact of mathematics tutorials on problem-solving abilities and critical thinking? ¨ What is the impact of tutorials on the self-image of the students, with reference to mathematics and mathematics achievement? ¨ What is the impact of tutorials on mathematics achievement? ¨ Which role could tutors play in the creation of role models? ¨ Do students have the need to communicate mathematically in their mother tongue? ¨ How successfully could portfolio assessment be implemented? Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered through a standardised questionnaire, the SOM, a specifically designed, structured questionnaire, observations, focus group interviews, reflective diaries and student records. Some of the findings include: ¨ Historically disadvantaged students § often possess a unsatisfactory study orientation; § apply inefficient time management; § suffer from mathematics anxiety; § do not show a correlation in terms of grade 12 symbols and success at tertiary level § often experience milieu deficit; § do not achieve according to their expectations; and § do not have a learning culture (COLT) at their disposal. ¨ Students generally perceived the tutorials as positive and contributing towards success. The students § did not often speak in their mother tongues; § appreciated the relaxed work tempo; and § utilise the support system of the smaller group. ¨ During the focus group interviews students recognised the following success factors: § regular class attendance; § completion of homework § planning and revision according to a study timetable. ¨ Students shared some personal experiences with the researcher, namely that § the tutorials boosted their self-image and make them willing to ask questions during lectures; § some tutors acted as positive role models; and § the consistent involvement of the lecturer motivated students. The statistical procedures revealed that the students in the experimental group did not perform significantly better than those in the control group, yet that does not diminish the value of the study in any way. Esta investigación, cuya finalidad es diseñar una plataforma virtual en la que las personas puedan tener acceso a un editor de videos amigable por las herramientas que posee y fácil de utilizar; así como también, tener la posibilidad de subir sus propias creaciones a la plataforma para poder compartirlo con sus amigos o contactos, se presenta como un proyecto factible que si puede ser rentable en el tiempo y soluciona los problemas de jóvenes y emprendedores que aún no dominan el manejo de las herramientas en las plataformas de edición de video, es por ello que les proponemos como solución un editor de videos con herramientas básicas, video tutoriales cortos explicando las funciones de las herramientas, plantillas de video para una mejor edición, formatos dependiendo la red social a la que va dirigido el video, entre otras opciones, con el objetivo que el usuario se familiarice con la plataforma. La solución a este problema fue validada mediante entrevistas tanto a posibles usuarios como a expertos en el tema, tomando en cuenta las opiniones y recomendaciones que van a permitir realizar modificaciones y así llegar a desarrollar una página y prototipo de editor de video acorde a lo que nuestro segmento de clientes está buscando. Del mismo modo, se realizaron publicaciones por medio de las redes sociales como Instagram y Facebook para que nuestro proyecto llegue a más usuarios y así tener una comunicación más directa con ellos. Asimismo, se realizaron los cálculos financieros a 3 años de nuestro proyecto tomando en cuenta las simulaciones de órdenes de compra en las últimas semanas y la proyección de nuestras ventas según las inversiones en marketing que se realizarán cada cierto tiempo. De igual manera, los financiamientos a los cuales vamos a acceder por parte del banco, de los accionistas y de un financiamiento no tradicional; finalmente, mencionar nuestros ratios e indicadores financieros que sustentan la viabilidad de TOMA4. / This research, whose purpose is to design a virtual platform in where people can have access to a friendly video editor due to the tools it has and easy to use; as well as having the possibility of uploading your own creations to the platform and to share it with your friends or contacts, it is presented as a feasible project that can be profitable over time and solves the problems of young people and entrepreneurs who have not yet mastered the management of tools in video editing platforms, that is why we propose a video editor with basic tools as a solution, short video tutorials explaining the functions of the tools, video templates for better editing, formats dependent on the network social which the video is directed, among other options, with the aim that the user becomes familiar with the platform. The solution to this problem was validated through interviews with both possible users and experts on the subject, taking into account the opinions and recommendations that will allow modifications, in that way develop a page and video editor prototype according to what our customer segment is looking for. In the same way, publications were made through social networks such as Instagram and Facebook so that our project reaches more users and to have more direct communication with them. Likewise, the financial calculations for 3 years of our project were carried out taking into account the simulations of purchase orders in recent weeks and the projection of our sales according to the marketing investments that will be made from time to time.
