Efeitos do tratamento químico na descontaminação de superfícies de implantes metálicos: estudo microscópico em subcutâneos de ratos / Effects of chemical treatment of surfaces in decontamination of metallic implants: microscopic study in subcutaneous ratsRafael Mansano de Castro Lara 09 March 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of treatment with citric acid, tetracycline, EDTA and phosphoric acid in titanium disks in smooth and roughened surfaces contaminated by bacterial biofilms in the connective tissue of rats. One hundred eighty titanium disks were used; 90 smooth surfaces and 90 roughened titanium surfaces, which were placed in 19 acrylic plates that were used by volunteers for 7 days. These disks were divided into 12 groups containing 15 disks each; Group 1L: 15 smooth disks were treated with citric acid; Group 1R: 15 roughened disks were treated with citric acid; Group 2L: 15 smooth disks were treated with tetracycline acid; Group 2R: 15 roughened disks were treated with tetracycline rough acid; Group 3L: 15 smooth disks were treated with EDTA; Group 3R: 15 roughened disks were treated with EDTA; Group 4L: 15 smooth disks were treated with phosphoric acid; Group 4R: 15 roughened disks were treated with phosphoric acid; Group CL: 15 smooth disks received no econtamination (smooth positive control); CR: 15 roughened disks did not receive decontamination (roughened positive control); EL: 15 smooth disks were not infected (smooth negative control) and ER: 15 roughened disks were not infected (roughened negative control). These disks were implanted subcutaneously in rats that were sacrificed after 7, 28 or 84 days. A descriptive and quantitative microscopic evaluation was performed. The average thickness of the capsules and the density of fibroblasts and neutrophils in three time periods were evaluated. The results showed differences in the density of neutrophilis mainly at 7 days and phosphoric acid showed the best results in this period, and at the end of 84 days, all treatments showed similar results even with the control group infected. In relation to the roughness, the smooth disks had a lower average capsule thickness compared with roughened disks, perhaps demonstrating an aspect of greater biocompatibility smooth surface, which would suggest greater effectiveness in decontamination of smooth disks.

Low Temperature Polymeric Precursor Derived Zinc Oxide Thin FilmsChoppali, Uma 12 1900 (has links)
Zinc oxide (ZnO) is a versatile environmentally benign II-VI direct wide band gap semiconductor with several technologically plausible applications such as transparent conducting oxide in flat panel and flexible displays. Hence, ZnO thin films have to be processed below the glass transition temperatures of polymeric substrates used in flexible displays. ZnO thin films were synthesized via aqueous polymeric precursor process by different metallic salt routes using ethylene glycol, glycerol, citric acid, and ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) as chelating agents. ZnO thin films, derived from ethylene glycol based polymeric precursor, exhibit flower-like morphology whereas thin films derived of other precursors illustrate crack free nanocrystalline films. ZnO thin films on sapphire substrates show an increase in preferential orientation along the (002) plane with increase in annealing temperature. The polymeric precursors have also been used in fabricating maskless patterned ZnO thin films in a single step using the commercial Maskless Mesoscale Materials Deposition system.

Studium akumulace kademnatých iontů energetickými plodinami / Study of accumulation of cadmium ion by energy cropsBerkyová, Petra January 2012 (has links)
Cadmium is heavy metal toxic for plants and animals and environmental contaminant which must be removed from natural environment. In recent years a new method phytoremediation is getting more attention. This method uses plants called hyperaccumulators for extraction of heavy metals from soils. Hyperaccumulators have, however, after accumulation of heavy metals no other use. Therefore new possibilities are discussed in last few years. Energy plants, in this thesis sorghum and malva, could be used for accumulation of heavy metals from soils and after that these plants could be used as energy source. This thesis wants to find out if sorgum and malva are able to grow in cadmium contaminated environment and if these plants will accumulate cadmium. It also compares different cultivars of sorghum in toxicity tests and compares ability of these cultivars to grow in cadmium contaminated environment and to accumulate this heavy metal. Further it focuses on affection of uptake of kadmium ions by sorhum in presence of glutathione or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid.

A Phytoremediation Study on the Effects of Soil Amendments on the Uptake of Arsenic by Two Perennial GrassesKlaber, Nica 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The effects of varying concentrations of two chelators: EDTA, citric acid (CA), and phosphorus on the accumulation of arsenic in soil by two perennial grasses, Leersia oryzoides and (rice cut-grass) Festuca arundinacea (tall fescue). Each experiment was run for eight weeks, after which plants were harvested, oven-dried, digested in acid and analyzed using an ICP-OES. Phosphorus soil amendments were applied as 0, 15, 30, 60, 120 mg P/kg soil. For the first chelator experiment, CA and EDTA concentrations of 0, 2.5, and 5.0 mmol/kg soil were added in pulse form to the soil. In the second chelator experiment, concentrations of CA were added in 0, 2.0, 4.0 mmol/kg soil and EDTA was added as 0, 0.25, 0.50 mmol/kg soil. Both plant species accumulated enough arsenic in the root and shoot tissues to be considered at hyperaccumulator species. Citric acid produced comparable results with EDTA, and is considerable much safer for the environment than any synthetic chelator. Certain soil amendments (citric acid and phosphorus) and hyperaccumulator species used in this study warrant further research in the field.

Influence of Biomimetic Chelating Packaging on Natural Antimicrobial EfficacyCastrale, Paul 27 October 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The iron chelating molecule, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is used in food applications for the preservation of oxidation prone ingredients. Research has suggested that EDTA is also capable of enhancing the antimicrobial effectiveness of various compounds including naturally-derived antimicrobials. With consumer demand for cleaner food labels, there remains an opportunity to introduce new chelating technology to replace synthetically-derived EDTA. Through photographting and chemical conversion, hydroxamic acid ligands were covalently bound to polypropylene films resulting in polypropylene-graft-poly(hydroxamic acid) (PP-g-PHA). The resulting films demonstrated an ability to chelate 64 nmol/cm2 from an iron saturated environment or 163 nmol/cm2 of magnesium and 139 nmol/cm2 of calcium from bacterial growth media. A surface pKa of 8.97 suggested that film ligands should remain protonated under acidic and neutral pH conditions. When combined with lysozyme, PP-g-PHA films were able to reduce inhibitory concentration of lysozyme for Listeria monocytogenes by half. When tested against Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and E. coli O157:H7; PP-g-PHA films were unable to inhibit growth and showed little enhancement of lysozyme. EDTA controls revealed that similar levels of soluble chelator were more effective than immobilized chelators. EDTA results also suggested that a chelating film with a higher affinity for iron (through coordination or ligand stability) may be able to control B. cereus growth. Both EDTA and PP-g-PHA caused P. fluorescens to produce siderophores (pyoerdines), suggesting that each treatment resulted in a low-iron growth environment. These findings suggest that surface bound chelating technology can affect the growth of L. monocytogenes and enhance the effectiveness of lysozyme. With improved surface chemistry (a higher binding constant with iron), this technology has the potential to influence the growth of other pathogens and spoilage microorganisms.

Base cations in forest soils : A pilot project to evaluate different extraction methods / Baskatjoner i skogsmark : Ett pilotprojekt för att utvärdera olika bestämningsmetoderOlofsson, Jonas January 2016 (has links)
The acidification has been a known problem in Sweden for several decades. Sulphurous compounds, spread from the British Isles and the European continent led to a decrease in the pH-value of the rain that fell over Sweden. Since the acidification was discovered in the 1960s, active measures against the sulphurous deposition have been undertaken. The sulphurous deposition has decreased by 90 %, and the problem was for some time considered under control, until recently when a new era of the acidification may have started. Due to the increased demand of renewable energy, and Sweden’s potential to use biomass instead of fossil fuels, whole tree harvesting has been more utilized. Studies indicate that the forest soils are depleted in base cations in a faster rate when whole tree harvesting is performed compared to regular stem harvesting. Mass balance calculations and simulations indicate that an increased bio uptake of base cations due to whole tree harvesting leads to an increased biological acidification. However, although many studies agree that the impact of the whole tree harvest on the base cation supply of the soils is significant, long running Swedish experiments indicate that the difference between whole tree harvesting and regular stem harvesting diminishes over time. After a 40 year period, the difference in base cation supply between whole tree harvested soils and stem harvested soils are small. The reason for this could be different processes that reallocate base cations from different pools, which are not usually studied. The aim has been to investigate and evaluate different chemical extraction methods (Aqua Regia, HCl, EDTA, BaCl2, NH4OAc and water) capability to extract the base cations calcium, potassium, magnesium and sodium from four different Swedish forest soils and what this means for our understanding of how much base cations a soil contains. The extractions indicated that there is a statistical significant difference between the methods ability to extract base cations. Generally Aqua Regia was the most potent method, followed by HCl, EDTA, BaCl2, NH4OAc and water in decreasing order of effectiveness to extract the base cations. Linear correlations were found between EDTA, BaCl2 and NH4OAc. The internationally widely used method NH4OAc was considered to be at risk of underestimating the amount of base cations in the soil.

Avaliação da capacidade de limpeza do canal radicular por meio de agentes quelantes e desmineralizantes: estudo, ex vivo, por MEV e espectrometria dos compostos / Evaluation of the cleaning ability of root canal by means of chelating and demineralization agents: ex vivo study, SEM and atomic absorption spectrometry of the compoundsAntunes, Polliana Vilaça Silva 09 November 2011 (has links)
This study aimed to evaluate, by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the ability to remove the smear layer from the apical and middle thirds of the root canal using chelators and demineralizing solutions, and quantify, by atomic absorption spectrophotometry flame, the concentration of calcium ions present in these solutions after their use. Twenty-five canines were prepared by Free Tip Preparation Technique with four instruments above the initial and irrigated with 1% sodium hypochlorite in each change of instrument. The teeth were randomly divided into four groups, according to the protocol used for the final irrigation: G1 - EDTA 15%, G2 - 0.2% chitosan, G3 - citric acid 10%, G4 - 1% acetic acid. The control group (G5) did not receive irrigation. We used 5 mL of each solution for 3 minutes. After irrigating the entire length of the root canal through the apical foramen, the solution was collected and sent to spectrometric analysis. The specimens were sectioned longitudinally and prepared for SEM analysis. The photomicrographs were qualitatively evaluated by three observers, who attributed scores to the images, equivalent to the amount of smear layer removal. The data obtained by SEM was statistically analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests. To evaluate the spectrometer, the Tukey-Kramer (one-way ANOVA) was used. The results showed that 15% EDTA, 0.2% chitosan and 10% citric acid had a similar smear layer removal with statistically different (p <0.05) when compared to 1% acetic acid and the control group. There was no difference between the solutions cleaning ability when the middle and apical thirds were compared. The highest concentration of calcium ions was observed in 15% EDTA group and 0.2% chitosan, with no statistical difference between them. The 1% acetic acid group had the lowest concentration and the 10% citric acid intermediate concentrations with statistical difference between each other (p <0.01). It can be concluded that the solutions of 15% EDTA, 0.2% chitosan and 10% citric acid were effective in removing the smear layer of the middle and apical thirds of the root canal. 15% EDTA solutions and 0.2% chitosan promoted the greatest effect on the demineralization, followed by 10% citric acid and 1% acetic acid.
