The intermodal reliability of regulating exercise intensity using ratings of perceived exertion

Burkhart, Tami L. January 1999 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intermodal reliability of perceptually-based exercise intensity among four machines: Treadmill (TM), Stationary cycle (CB), Body Trec elliptical arm/leg (BT), and AirDyne (AD). Nineteen subjects (8 male and 11 female; age 44 + 12 yrs) completed one GXT on each of the machines, following a mode-specific protocol. Subjects also completed two 15 minute production trials (PTs) on each machine at self-selected workrates corresponding to target RPEs of 11-12 (L) and 15-16 (H). In the PTs, workloads were self-adjusted through the first 5 minutes and then remained stable for the rest of the trial. Modes were randomly assigned, and subjects were blinded to the workload throughout each trial. Heart rate (HR) and oxygen uptake (V02) were obtained during the final 5 min. of each trial using a Polar HR monitor and Aerosport TEEM 100. Also, blood lactate (BLC) was sampled immediately following exercise at each intensity. Intermodal reliability was assessed using ANOVA, intraclass correlations (R), coefficients of variation (CV), and mean absolute differences for HR, V02, and BLC during the second PT. ANOVA revealed nointeraction for BLC at either the LOW or HIGH. Post -hoc analysis showed the TM and/or BT to produce significantly higher physiological responses at both intensity levels. At the L and H, intermodal Rs were: HR (.84/.88), VO2 (8/.77) and BLC (0.09/0.67). Significant intrasubject differences were observed at the L for HR (11-47bpm, VO2 (.04-1.46 L/min), and BLC (.29-12.94 mM/L). The H trials followed a very similar trend. Using a HR criteria of +2 beats/15 sec. to assess intrasubject reliability, 0% of the subjects were reliable at both the L and H. This data suggests that perceptually-based exercise across multiple modes is associated with significant intraindividual variability, and reliability is dependent upon the statistical design and physiological variable being used. In conclusion, it is recommended that extensive exercise testing be performed to ensure that individual participants can reliably use the RPE scale, prior to using an RPE value to prescribe the intensity of exercise. / School of Physical Education

Preliminary normative standards for muscular strength assessment using free-weights and Paramount/Cybex machines / Title on approval sheet: Creating standards for muscular strength assessment using free-weights and Paramount machines

Kesler, Douglas D. January 2005 (has links)
Preliminary normative standards are a tool clinical exercise specialists and health fitness instructors can use when interpreting muscular strength testing results. However, a challenge for professionals is evaluating an individual's one-repetition maximum (IRM) and relating that to others of the same age and gender, because there are no preliminary normative standards for 1RMs available when testing via free-weights and machines. This study conducted at Ball State University, Adult Physical Fitness Laboratory, examined results of muscular strength testing in order to obtain the normative muscular strength of adults. The purpose was to develop preliminary normative standards for strength of adults and to compare the 1RM weight an individual lifts between free-weights, Paramount, and Cybex machines. Seventy-nine healthy men and women between 18 and 79 years of age participated in the study. Subjects were tested on free weights, Paramount, and Cybex machines.Test results revealed preliminary normative standards for 1RM on free weights. Individuals were categorized in three age groups for the free-weight bench press and the Cybex (free-weight) Leg Press. The 18-23 year olds obtained a IRM mean (± Standard Deviation (SD)) of 200.6 + 32.8 lbs and 83.6 ± 18.5 lbs for men and women, respectively, for the free-weight bench press. The 43-59 year olds obtained a 1RM mean of 149.2 ± 41.8 lbs and 71.3 ± 8.6 lbs and the 60-79 year olds had a 1RM mean of 119.5 + 30.0 Ibs and 61.6 ± 15.6 lbs for men and women, respectively, for the free-weight bench press. The 18-23 year olds obtained a 1RM Cybex (free-weight) leg press mean of 484.9 + 58.0 lbs and 234.3 ± 67.5 lbs for men and women, respectively. The 43-59 year olds were able to obtain 1RM means of 444.4 + 84.9 lbs and 254.5 ± 51.7 lbs and the older subjects (60-79 years old) were able to obtain 1RM mean of 390.7 ± 98.6 lbs and 230.3 ± 76.6 lbs for men and women, respectively. Results were also documented in relative values by the amount of weight pushed divided by body weight for better comparison of individuals. Subjects generally lifted more weight on the Cybex (free-weight) leg press compared to the Cybex (machine) leg press. All subjects (N=79) had a mean and standard deviation of 294.9 + 87.7 lbs for the Cybex (machine) leg press (1RMs) and 343.4 ± 123.4 lbs on the Cybex (free-weight) leg press (1RMs). There was a significant difference between the Cybex (free-weight) leg press and the Cybex leg press (p<.001). The correlation for these two types of lifts was r=0.88. There was a significant difference between the free-weight bench press and the Paramount seated chest press (p<.001). The correlation for between the two types of lifts was r=0.93. / School of Physical Education, Sport, and Exercise Science

A design standards manual for the Wheaton Park District, Wheaton, Illinois

Bettin, Cameron January 1993 (has links)
The purpose of the creative project was to complete a Design Standards Manual consisting of guidelines and standards to aid Park Planners in completing the site design process (the site design plan and construction drawings). The project consists of chapters pertaining to playground, outdoor athletic facility, parking lot and park road, plant material, trails-paths, and signage design. The project was tested through a case study involving Ball State University landscape architect students redeveloping twelve school sites for the City of Anderson School Corporation. The test was to determine if an organized, technical manual would ease decision making in the site design process, make plans consistantly workable, and not limit the Planners originality and creativity. The case study was summarized, evaluated, and the project's usefulness and limitations were concluded. / Department of Landscape Architecture

Catalyst for coalition : the Anglo-American supply relationship, 1939-1941

Thornhill, Paula Georgia January 1991 (has links)
This thesis explores the Anglo-American supply relationship, 1939-1941, and the ability of these two nations to wage a coalition war immediately after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Organisationally, the first chapters of the thesis look at the impact of the Great War and the interwar period on this relationship. The remaining chapters are devoted to the evolution of the supply relationship between September 1939 and December 1941. The evidence found in British and American archives indicates that early supply discussions, conducted under the supervision of Arthur Purvis and Henry Morgenthau, established a common ground for Anglo-American co-operation during the early days of the Second World War. The fall of France prompted the British Government to seek much closer ties with the United States. However, in mid-1940 many senior US officials insisted that America should concentrate on its own defence against the Nazi threat because of the likelihood of Britain's defeat. By the end of 1940, the American defence planners were more confident of Britain's ability to survive, and therefore they were willing to consider the creation of Anglo-American defence plans. At the same time President Roosevelt requested Congressional approval for the Lend-Lease Act, to ensure the British Government could still acquire US war supplies even if it lacked the dollars to pay for them. Because of the inability of US industry to produce adequate war materiel for the British effort and American rearmament, representatives from the two countries were forced to work closely together to determine production and allocation priorities. Moreover, since these decisions influenced the fighting capability of British and American forces, war planners rather than civilians officials began to make these supply decisions. Subsequently, British and American officials determined that their efforts should be based on a joint strategy. Ultimately this realisation inspired the creation of the Victory Programme, which effectively acknowledged that supply needs, strategic considerations, and an overall commitment to defeat Germany and its allies were indistinguishable. Thus the supply relationship, 1939-1941, provided the foundation for the Anglo-American wartime coalition against Hitler.
