Examining the Impact of Error Encouragement on Training Outcomes

Error management training has been praised as an effective strategy for facilitating adaptive transfer. However, potential variations have not yet been examined to determine if an alternative format may be equally or more effective. As standard practice, error-related instructions in error management training encourage learners to make errors and to view these errors as learning opportunities. Also, an overwhelming majority of research on this topic has focused learner development of procedural computer software skills. The empirical literature provides little guidance in terms of the boundaries within which error management training is an effective training approach. The purpose of this research was to examine the relative effectiveness of a modified error management training approach for influencing adaptive transfer in contrast to both standard error management training and error avoidant training. The modified error management approach encouraged learners to do their best to avoid errors, but maintained traditional instructions to learn from errors. The effectiveness of these three training conditions for promoting adaptive transfer was examined in two studies. The first study applied the error strategies to a complex decision-making task, and the second study compared the strategies relative effectiveness for a fine motor skills task. Study 1 results indicated that both error management training approaches were associated with higher adaptive learning compared to an error avoidant training approach. Error management and the modified error management did not significantly differ. In Study 2, error management training and error avoidant training both demonstrated greater adaptive transfer than did the modified approach. The mediating roles of metacognition and emotion regulation were examined, but unsupported, in both studies. Implications for future research and organizational practice are discussed.

The Plausibility of Moral Error Theories

The project that resulted in this work had two main goals. The first was to sort out the most plausible form of the moral error theory, the view made popular by J.L. Mackie in his Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong. Second, I aimed to determine the extent of its plausibility. The first three chapters of this dissertation are the result of my attempt to accomplish the first goal, and the last two chapters are a consequence of the second. In the end, I argue that the most plausible version of the error theory (viz., Richard Joyce's development of Mackie's views) is not true. Along the way, I make three additional novel contributions to the meta-ethical literature. First, I provide a close reading of Mackie's work, and I argue that he has been misinterpreted thus far in the literature. Second, I attempt to clarify the linguistic and metaphysical components of the error theory. Third, I explicate a novel view in meta-ethics that isn't a direct descendent of Mackie's views, but which is, in many important respects, similar to his view. I call the view 'moral indecisionism', since its main thesis seems to agree with Hume when he writes, "The chief obstacle ... to our improvement in the moral ... sciences is the obscurity of the ideas, and ambiguity of the terms."

Ocular biometric change in orthokeratology. An investigation into the effects of orthokeratology on ocular biometry and refractive error in an adult population.

Aim; This study looks at the effect of orthokeratology on a number of biometric parameters and refractive error in an adult population. Method; Forty three myopic subjects were recruited to a twelve month study into the effects of orthokeratology on ocular biometry and refractive error. Two different back surface lens designs were applied right eye) pentacurve and left eye) aspheric. The aspheric design was chosen to more closely mimic the cornea¿s natural shape. Anterior and posterior apical radii and p-values; corneal thickness and anterior chamber depth were measured using the Orbscan IIz; together with ocular biometry by IOL Master and a standard clinical refraction. All measurements were repeated at one night, one week, one, three, six and twelve months. Refractive changes were analysed against biometric changes. Results; Twenty seven participants completed one month of lens wear. Twelve subjects completed twelve months of lens wear. Subjects with myopia ¿ -4.00DS were successfully treated with orthokeratology. Both anterior and posterior apical radii and p values were altered by orthokeratology. Corneal thickness changes were in agreement with previously published studies. Axial length and anterior chamber depth were unaffected by the treatment. Conclusion; Orthokeratology should be available as an alternative to laser refractive surgery. It is best restricted to myopes of up to -4.00DS with low levels of with the rule corneal astigmatism. The use of an aspheric back design contact lens did not produce a significant benefit over that of a pentacurve.

No / Wavelet based multicarrier systems have attracted the attention of the researchers over the past few years to replace the conventional OFDM systems in the next generation communication systems. In this paper we have investigated the performance of such wavelet based systems using forward error correction with covolutional coding and interleaving in a Wavelet-SISO system and then in a Wavelet multicarrier modulation (WMCM) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system using Convolutional coding and beamforming to reduce the source bit rate and overall system error and increase the data rate. Results show outstanding Bit Error Rate vs. Signal to Noise Ratio Performance. Other than better performance the proposed systems keep the computational burden off the receiver that has more cost and power constraints.

Understanding Medical Error in Surgical Stapler Use: A Philosophical and Scientific Analysis

Classified for decades as a “least risk medical device,” surgical staplers have been recently associated with at least 41,000 injuries and 360 deaths in the last ten years (FDA Letter to Healthcare Providers, 2019). This shocking development has generated calls for a broad investigation into the errors involved in surgical stapler use and reform of the regulatory protocol for medical devices. Current regulatory infrastructure and framework operate with understandings that combine risk inherent to the device and that which is born by the operator (FDA Classification Call, 2019). This thesis explores the aforementioned classification error and its adverse outcomes from an epistemological standpoint. Social epistemic analysis is applied to FDA regulation and to the comparison of two scenarios in reference to the current status-quo classification and to the proposed risk reclassification of surgical staples. Expert versus novice error avoidance surgical performance capabilities are discussed under these two different classificatory scenarios and epistemic social roles.
