Investigating the Experience: A Case Study of a Science Professional Development Program Based on Kolb's Experiential Learning Model

Professional development for educators has been defined as the process or processes by which teachers achieve higher levels of professional competence and expand their understanding of self, role, context and career (Duke and Stiggins, 1990). Currently, there is limited research literature that examines the effect a professional development course, which uses David Kolb’s experiential learning model, has on the professional growth and teaching practice of middle school science teachers. The purpose of this interpretive case study is to investigate how three science teachers who participated in the Rivers to Reef professional development course interpreted the learning experience and integrated the experience into their teaching practice. The questions guiding this research are 1. What is the relationship between a professional development course that uses an experiential learning model and science teaching practice? 2. How do the Rivers to Reef participants reflect on and describe the course as a professional growth experience? The creation of the professional development course and the framework for the study were established using David Kolb’s (1975) experiential learning theory and the reflection process model designed by David Boud (1985). The participants in the study are three middle school science teachers from schools representing varied settings and socioeconomic levels in the southeastern United States. Data collected used the three-interview series interview format designed by Dolbere and Schuman (Seidman, 1998). Data was analyzed for the identification of common categories related to impact on science teaching practice and professional growth. The major finding of this study indicates the years of teaching experience of middle school science teachers significantly influences how they approach professional development, what and how they learn from the experience, and the ways in which the experience influences their teaching practices.

The role of an experimental component in the analytic classrooms of minority-language students /

This study, undertaken in the classrooms of minority-language students in French-language schools in Montreal, aims to test Stern's (1990, 1992) proposal for integrating analytic and experiential teaching strategies in second language pedagogy. A related objective seeks to establish the pedagogical orientation of instructional practices during French language arts as being more analytically---or more experientially---focused and to describe the setting from the perspective of these culturally and linguistically diverse students for whom French is a second language. Research procedures entailed the implementation of an integrated activity---journal writing with differential feedback (form-focused, content-based, and a combination of form-focused and content-based)---in four Grade 5 classrooms (N = 112 in total) for approximately four months of one academic year. Twenty-four classroom observations that included coding with the COLT observation scheme and taking fieldnotes were also carried out, and individual interviews were conducted with students, teachers, and administrators. Throughout the study, the francophone students in the participating classrooms acted as a comparison group. The study demonstrated that minority-language students' home cultures and the potentially positive role of the mother tongue in second language learning were not well understood in this context of submersion. COLT findings and qualitative outcomes triangulated to reveal instructional practices that were more inclined towards an analytic than towards an experiential approach to teaching. For both groups of students, MANOVA results indicated no significant effects for quantity of production, accuracy, and overall effectiveness in the journal writing as a function of differential feedback; behavioural and attitudinal data proved helpful in the interpretation of these statistical outcomes. On the other hand the resolution taken by the South African nursing Council at the beginning of 2000. that enrolled nurses should be upgraded through the process of recognition of prior learning further increased the urgency for nursing education institutions to develop and implement RPL policies In South Africa, Recognition of Prior learning (RPL)is seen as an appropriate approach to offer equity and redress of past imbalances in the education and training system. The purpose of the study was to develop and test an appropriate model that could be used for Recognition of Prior Learning for nurses. To test the model, it was implemented in a form of pilot projects by three institutions. It was important for the model development to identify and involve all the stakeholders of the nursing education system. An appropriate design for the study was a multiphase decision oriented evaluation research . Stuffelbeam's Context. Input, Process and Product evaluation model was used to guide the research process. The first phase was the development of the model which involved the Context evaluation. During the context evaluation phase, the Education Committee of the South African Nursing Council and the evaluative researcher developed the guidelines for the RPL process. These were refined by the stakeholders during the regional workshops. The results of this phase was the RPL guidelines. The second phase was the Input and the Process evaluations. Each institution had to make planning decisions for Implementation. The result was RPL policies for each institution Thereafter. the three institutions Implemented the RPL guidelines to specific target groups of nurses that were identified for the purpose of the pilot project. Data collection instruments varied according to the phase of the model development. Checklists were used to measure the extent to which each Institution had followed the RPL guidelines Dunng the Product (evaluation) phase. candidates' scores were compared with those of other candidates who accessed the specific programs through the traditional entry routes. According to the results all RPL candidates were successful In the programs they aimed at accessing DUring the testing phase after access, the RPL candidates compared favourably with other the other candidates who accessed the programs through traditional routes . The result indicate that the self- directed approach used during RPL helped the candidates in the actual programs. A process onented and competency- focused model was developed through an inclusive process. The overall aim of this thesis is to contribute to the knowledge on how formal education gives cognitive support to informal learning at work. The ambition is to combine different theoretical perspectives on learning. Formal learning, mostly within institutions for education, is usually seen from a cognitive or constructivist perspective, and informal learning from situational or socio-cultural perspectives. Combining these perspectives, this thesis is based on a case study of how a formal training program for Swedish military personnel, going on a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, gives cognitive support to their informal, experiential learning during the mission. The case study has an ethnographic research design where 17 military leaders at different levels are interviewed, observed and “shadowed” during three field periods during training in Sweden and during work in Kosovo. The empirical material and the different theoretical perspectives on learning are used to construct a perspective-integrating conceptual model of how the formal training, through different learning resources, helps the leaders to develop a subjective understanding of their coming work. This understanding is then used by the leaders to mentally frame the specific experiences and actions they encounter at work. This mental framing is also prevalent in their reflections in and on their work, and their informal learning at work can be shown to be heavily influenced by the understanding the leaders developed during formal training. However, most of this understanding cannot be related to formal learning resources, but to learning resources the military leaders themselves bring to the training in the way of their earlier experiences, their military professional orientation, and their internal discussions in free time. The main conclusions are that 1) contrary to prevailing dogma, different perspectives on learning can be brought together, and 2) if formal education is going to give cognitive support to learning at work, it needs to address the question of how the conceptual structure of the training content can be integrated with the often private concepts the workers themselves have of their work.

Extension workers help small holder farmers uplift their food production. In most African countries, the curriculum of agricultural extension institutions has been adopted from other countries. This causes higher education institutions to produce graduates with inadequate skills to meet the needs of African countries. With the transformation in South Africa, and the resultant unification of the extension system, the curriculum needs to be reviewed to meet the current needs of the employers. This research explores the potential of including structured experiential learning into the curriculum with the aim of bridging the gap that exists within the extension training systems in South Africa. The alumni from two institutions, one with an unstructured experiential learning programme and the other with a structured experiential learning programme were interviewed to find out the skills that they feel are needed and whether those skills can be effectively taught during the academic training of students. A convenience sampling method was used. The employer’s perceptions regarding the skills for effective extension work were also solicited. Both the alumni and the employers indicated that well planned and supervised experiential learning would help students acquire practical agriculture skills, and also orientate them to the new work environment. The educators indicated that the curriculum structure at times impedes the effective implementation of an experiential learning programme due to semester system and demands from other courses The research revealed that for effective experiential learning, it is important that universities work with communities in development programmes and to forge links with the industry. Although service providers may be willing to offer experiential learning to students, they are also limited in terms of resources. In South Africa, changes to the political landscape have highlighted the glaring differences in the previous government's policies in the provision of worker education and training for a highly skilled workforce throughout the different sectors. This situation invoked the need for changes to the skills development policies for improving the skills profile in the country. "Learnerships - an informal learning experience" : an inquiry into the impact of informal learning on learnerships in the footwear industry.

The Skills Development Act (97 of 1988) introduced a new approach to the development of workrelated skills in South Africa. This Act provided the legal underpinnings for learnerships, which include both structured work experience (Le. a practical component) and instructional learning (i.e. a theory learning component). Learnerships are offered in an accredited workplace environment and culminate in a qualification that is registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). Research studies support the view that informal learning accounts for over 75%-90% of the learning that takes place in organizations today. Although the majority of learning that occurs in the workplace is informal, little is, however, known about how such learning is best supported, encouraged and developed in a learnership programme. The impact of informal learning on learnerships must be seen as an essential ingredient for effective workplace skills programmes and the advancement of skills acquisition leading to qualifications and career planning resulting in a highly skilled workforce. This research study was prompted by the perception that the majority of workers in the footwear industry have a low formal educational level and are either non-skilled or semi-skilled, financial sustainability of the footwear industry and global competition. Learnerships are perceived to be a creative vehicle whereby workers are able to acquire basic production and manufacturing skills in the workplace through a Clothing, Textiles, Footwear and Leather (CTFL) learnership programme. This research study explores the factors in an education and training environment that enhance or inhibit informal learning opportunities and how these factors shape or impede informal learning, thus impacting on the performance of learners in a footwear learnership programme. Although no single theoretical framework of informal learning exists, this research study was informed and underpinned by the theoretical models of various experts in the field of informal 7 learning. Using an interpretivist paradigm the researcher opted to study the implementation of learnerships at one accredited training provider in the footwear industry. Data collection instruments provided rich, detailed qualitative data using semi-structured interviews, observations and document analysis within a case study approach. An analysis of clinical supervsion [sic] and support for bridging programme students in the clinical settings in the greater Durban area.

The purpose of the study was to describe the nature of clinical supervision and support provided to bridging programme students in the clinical settings. A descriptive and an exploratory design were most appropriate. There were one hundred-and-twenty-two participants in the study. Data was collected by means of a questionnaire and a critical incident report. The questionnaires included semi-structured questions where the respondents were able to discuss the effects of clinical supervision and teaching behaviours that would enhance learning during clinical accompaniment. The subjects were the second year students in the bridging programme. Only those students who consented participated in the study. The campuses that were used were the Prince Mshyeni College of Nursing, Netcare Nursing Academy and Afrox College of Nursing. These campuses were conveniently selected because they were in the greater Durban area and were thus easily accessible to the researcher. Students described the positive and negative experiences they received from the clinical supervisor and the ward staff. Positive experiences included the feelings of confidence, and the gaining of interpersonal skills. Gaining self- confidence as a nurse is an essential aspect of the student nurse's professional development. The negative experiences were that the students were treated as the normal workforce because of their experience as enrolled nurses. The challenges of clinical supervision are to help the student to evaluate critically the effect of actions taken, to assist him/her to perform procedures skilfully and to enable him/her to relate to patients in an ethical and caring manner. The critical incident analysis revealed that the student nurses continued to use informal support networks as well as their supervision sessions to discuss clinical issues. Respondents reported an enthusiasm for the opportunity to talk meaningfully to a trusted colleague about personal circumstances at work. Such opportunities were particularly welcomed by nurses who wished to reflect upon their own practices with patients, especially when dealing with clinical conditions that were upsetting, or otherwise challenging. The relationship between learning styles, stages of self-direction in learning and academic performance in a case-based nursing program.

The Institutes of Nursing in the United Arab Emirates adopted a new approach for educating and training the Diploma Nursing students in 1997. This approach emphasized the use of case-based learning, which was characterized by self-directed and cooperative learning. As the students were experiencing changes in the educational setting and teaching practices it was important to determine the impact of the teaching and learning approaches on students' learning, and to describe suggestions needed for improvement. The purposes of this study were to determine the learning styles and stages of self-direction in learning for students at Abu Dhabi Institute of Nursing, and to investigate whether there was a relationship between learning style, stage of self-direction and academic performance in courses taught by the case-based method. This study was guided by Kolb's theory of Experiential Learning, and Grow's theory of the Staged Self-Directed Learning Model. Kolb's learning style inventory and a self designed tool to measure stages of self-direction were administered to 186 students, who agreed to participate in the study. The design was a descriptive correlational one, and data was analyzed by descriptive, correlation, and inferential statistics methods. The assimilator learning style was the most predominant learning style (35.5%) followed by the converger (29.6%). Accommodators and divergers had equal percentage (17%) for each. As for the stages in self-direction, most of the students rated themselves in the moderate stages of self-direction (67.2%), however, Diploma III had the higest percentage of high self-directed learners (57%). Significant relationship was found between learning styles and academic performance, where convergers and divergers scored higher than assimilators and accommodators. Also a significant relationship was found between the stage of self-direction in learning and academic performance, where students in higher stages of self-direction had higher mean scores compared to students in low and moderate stages of self-direction. / Thesis (M.Cur.)-University of Natal, Durban, 2001.
