Marketing Innovation During a Crisis : A case study on the responses of Swedish SMEs to the COVID-19 pandemic

Lundell, Elvira, Varga, Zsófia January 2021 (has links)
Background: The economic crisis derived from the COVID-19 pandemic has an impact on the global economy and Swedish small and medium-sized enterprises are challenged to adapt their practices to the new consumer buying behaviour. As a response to economic crises, where consumer buying behaviour changes, companies are forced to innovate their marketing methods.  Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how Swedish SMEs manage the economic crisis derived from the COVID-19 pandemic through the relatively unexplored relationship between crisis management and marketing innovation.  Method: This research is an exploratory qualitative study focusing on Swedish small and medium-sized enterprises where semi-structured interviews were held with seven participants who were marketing responsible. A thematic analysis was applied to analyse the empirical data.  Conclusion: The empirical findings and the analysis suggest three main areas when answering the research question. 1) Marketing innovation improved the crisis management practice among the interviewed enterprises. 2) Marketing innovation is a common crisis management tool among the respondents of this study, and one reason why is because of the high capacity to innovate of the interviewees. 3) A new type of crisis management is arising because of the technological advancements and business climate.

ECONOMIC CRISES AND CRIME : The Effects of the Great Recession on Swedish Crime Rates

Granath, Jakob January 2021 (has links)
This paper investigates the impact of the 2008's financial crisis on local crime rates in Sweden. I deploy a difference-in-differences approach that contrasts the changes in reported crimes between municipalities that are more or less crisis-exposed. The results show no significant effect on any crime category nor the aggregate crime rate. However, there are indications of more densely populated municipalities experiencing an increase in crimes with underlying financial incentives, although not robust. The results are similar when the effect of the Great Recession is compared to the major financial crisis that hit Sweden in the early 90s, suggesting that economic crises do not cause any reactions in crimes. One explanation could be the increase in social grants recipients and the participation in labour market programmes. Both of which cushions the fall in income and reduces criminal motivation. The results appear robust for a variety of alternative severity measures. Potential spillovers between adjacent municipalities do not seem to be a threat as the results are similar for county-level regressions. Overall, the findings in this paper point towards the number of reported crimes being unaffected by the crisis exposure measured as the employment change and change in retail sales.

Aragalaya - Stories about unity and conflicts in a crisis-hit Sri Lanka

Modin-Lundin, Amie January 2022 (has links)
Abstract   Sri Lanka battled a civil war for 26 years during a time when the majoritarian rule discriminated and marginalized Tamils from the rest of the society; the war ended in 2009 but numerous societal problems remained in the country. The Easter bombings in 2019 took the lives of 269 people, once again ethno-nationalistic powers and politics became of great importance within the country’s political sphere. The Rajapaksa family convinced many Sri Lankans that they could fight tensions in the country and uphold national security and Gotabaya Rajapaksa won the presidential election in 2019. In 2022, Sri Lanka faced the worst economical crisis since gaining independence in 1948 and many thousands Sri Lankans took the streets to protest against corruption and the and disproportionate use and even misuse of the country’s resources.   The aim of the thesis is to collect stories from Sri Lankans in Colombo from various religious, ethnic and cultural groups and to analyze their views on democracy, religious, ethnic and cultural identity and their views of possibly perceived unity. The overall aim of this study is to uncover the voices of those directly affected by the situation in Sri Lanka during the spring of 2022. Participatory observation and qualitative interviews were used to collect the empirical data of the study.   Massive protests (that came to be called ‘Aragalaya’ - the Sinhalese word for struggle) took place from March 2022 and transformations within the political sphere in the country due to the economical crisis during that time enabled deep insight and generated interesting perspectives from interviewees that participated in the research. The empirical data is analyzed through the theoretical perspectives of marginalization theory and theory on democracy and protests.

The political economy of policing in Zimbabwe: Changing roles, practice and identities in relationship to peace, security and development

Chirambwi, Kudakwashe January 2019 (has links)
ABSTRACT: This thesis examines policing within the context of security and development, with particular reference to ways in which the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) operates in the wider political economy of Zimbabwean state in response to decades of financial crisis. Guided by the social constructionist philosophy and structural political economy analysis, the case study demonstrates that, through a range of commercial activities, the ZRP has been able to shift police preoccupation from ‘what is routinely important’ to ‘what works’ as part of resilience and adaptability in one of the world’s distorted economies. In cases where the police lack sufficient budget support from the government they recalibrate into self-organized systems and devise ways in which they raise the much needed revenue for policing. Using interpretive content analysis for secondary data and thematic analysis for in-depth interviews, the other finding relates to the ways in which the ZRP deploys neoliberal registers of ‘sustainable development’ and economic nationalist discourses to legitimise its involvement in commercial activities in farms, mines, tourism and social welfare businesses. Commercial activities involve distribution of wealth, power and interests. As such, what started off as productive entrepreneurship to ‘make ends meet’ slipped into unproductive and destructive entrepreneurship. The latter has made the police institution gets to a breakdown as different categories of officers split into different commercial units as they compete for access and control. To date, there is little literature that foregrounds the experiences and views of the police officers on the political economy of policing and it is to this literature this thesis primarily contributes. Inadvertently, as the ZRP responds to the economic crisis, it sometimes uses violence against citizens. The violence is sometimes quite targeted and deliberate as the police use metal spiked bars to clampdown motorists in demand of bribe money. The findings suggest that the police operating in a context of budget cuts are highly unlikely to be people-oriented. / The full text will be available at the end of the embargo, 17th July 2024

Dopady světové hospodářské krize na automobilový průmysl / Impacts of the global economic crisis on the automotive industry

Temlík, Lukáš January 2010 (has links)
The main aim of this Master's thesis is to briefly describe the causes of the global economic crisis (including the ways it spread to the automotive industry) and to analyze its impacts in each center (USA, Europe and Asia) focusing on the USA, because it was just the cradle of the automotive industry, which suffered the greatest damages. This thesis also tries to provide the answers to the questions, to which extent each car maker had to deal with the problems (including the short description of the impacts on the largest Czech car maker) and how they managed to handle the crisis also partially thanks to the government measures of different countries or the EU as the whole. The Master's thesis further includes the final chapter summarizing and comparing the impacts on each center of the automotive industry with pointing out the most important facts regarding not only the performed changes, but also the probable future development.
