Theoretical and practical aspects of ecumenical communication

Cate, William Burke January 1953 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University. / Theoretical and practical aspects of ecumenical communication is the subject of this research. It is an effort to discover the role of theoretical and practical communication in the ecumenical movement. This is an important study because at this moment the newly founded World Council of Churches, which is the institutional form of the ecumenical movement, must determine its future strategy. Questions arise as to whether activity in life and work or in faith and order or in both at the same time will ensure the growth of ecumenical understanding among the churches. In order to understand this we must comprehend the role of the doctrinal and the non-doctrinal factors in ecumenical communication. The method of this dissertation is to reconstruct in four chapters the historical development of the ecumenical movement through the four contributing channels; the International Missionary Council, the Faith and Order Movement, the Life and Work Movement and the Federal Council of Churches. This will provide the historical perspective and the basic data of the research. The second section of the dissertation, which comprises five chapters, analyzes communication in the ecumenical movement from the point of view of the doctrinal and the noon-doctrinal factors. Chapters V and VI are dedicated to the analysis of the doctrinal and non-doctrinal barriers to ecumenical communication. The next two chapters reveal the role of the doctrinal and non-doctrinal communication that builds the ecumenical community. The final chapter is devoted to the summary and conclusions. [TRUNCATED]

What does Athens 2005 have to do with cape town 2010? A critical comparison of mission theologies of the commission for world mission and evangelism and of the Lausanne movement on social responsibility.

Jambulosi, Mavuto January 2020 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This research compares the similarities and differences in the official documents and proceedings of the Commission for World Mission and Evangelism (CWME) in Athens 2005 and the Lausanne Movement held in Cape Town in 2010. The former has always exhibited a missiology strong in issues of social justice while the latter has for a long time been consistent in identifying mission as evangelism. The close of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th saw the emergence of the social gospel, which came about as a result of the historical critical approach to biblical texts. Fundamentalists, arose as a reactionary phenomenon to the social gospel, while emphasizing fundamentals of the Christian doctrines and a strict premillennial eschatology which resisted social involvement in favour of salvation of souls.

Regionalism, Nationalism and Social Gospel Support in the Ecumenical Movement of Canadian Presbyterianism

Ross , John Arthur 11 1900 (has links)

The thesis is a critical examination of the social and cultural factors operative in the ecumenical movement of Canadian Presbyterianism that led to the formation of the United Church of Canada in 1925. Canadian ecumenicity is examined in the light of contemporary international research in the sociology of ecumenism. The thesis employs both historical materials and statistical records to discover the salient variables influencing support and opposition to church union.

It is the central contention of the thesis that support and opposition to church union were motivated by a complex of variables relating to regionalism, nationalism and the social gospel movement. The issues that divided the Presbyterian Church in the ecumenical controversy were the same issues that divided English speaking Canada. It is our contention that the creation of a national united church was seen as a vehicle for the systematic redemption of Canadian society, that it was an attempt to dramatically reform and redefine confederation. It is our final contention that the vision of a new society or the hope of attaining a comparable ideal is an essential component for the accomplishment of an extensive inter-denominational church merger in an industrialized nation.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Evangelicals and ecumenism in South Africa 1960-1990 : opportunities and pitfalls.

January 2007 (has links)
The study explores the relationship of the evangelical movement in South Africa with the ecumenical movement. The focus of the latter was taken as organizationally embodied in the South African Council of Churches. The time period 1960 - 1990 was chosen for the study as this was a period of great socio political upheaval and testing for the churches. This was also a period that marked both the escalation of the struggle against apartheid as well as the accentuation of the differences that churches had among themselves as they were confronted with the reality of apartheid. The author believes that the trying times in view, 1960 -1990; best clarify the lessons that could be learned by both evangelicals and ecumenicals. The trials of this period presented the churches of South Africa unique opportunities for growth in the midst of intense struggles. The study seeks to unpack theological lessons that would perhaps not be as easy to see at a different time, for example under conditions of peace and quiet. / Thesis (M.Th.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2007.

Ecumenism and theological convergence : a comparative analysis of Edinburgh 1910 and the Lausanne movement

Pruitt, Harold Edward 06 1900 (has links)
Ecumenism and Theological Convergence: A Comparative Analysis of Edinburgh 1910 and the Lausanne Movement." This thesis evaluates the Edinburgh 1910 World Mission Conference, the ecumenism that flowed from Edinburgh 1910, and its relationship to the ecumenical trends that exist within the Lausanne movement. Additionally, this thesis determines how ecumenism has attributed to a theological convergence, and then examines the impact of such theological convergence on the global church through parachurch organizations. It begins by laying the foundation for any theological convergence that existed at Edinburgh 1910. It then examines ecumenism within the Lausanne movement, theological significance of ecumenism, and its impact on the global church. Finally, the thesis explores the theological convergence within select parachurch organizations since Lausanne 1974 and analyzes the impact of theological convergence on the global church. The researcher of this thesis has surveyed several sources to determine the originality of this topic through search engines World Cat, World Cat Dissertations, Dissertations, Article First, ATLA Religion, Humanities Index, Humanities Abstract, Christian Periodical Index, Worldscope, and also significant works about Lausanne 1974. The search revealed nothing substantial concerning Lausanne’s impact on the Global Church through parachurch organizations, the researcher deems this thesis to be an original work. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.
